View Full Version : I start school in May, yikes!
waltman 04-21-2008, 04:57 AM Well I finished that career planning and several workshops like conflict resolution, anger management and assertiveness training. I honestly thought the workshops were going to be a total waste of time but was happy to be wrong. Anyways, I applied for sponsership with Employment Insurance and although it was looking questionable weather I was going to get it all or make the summer semester, I did it!!:chili::chili::beer It took a lot of leg work and thankfully I had several people trying to make this work, including people I haven't even met and some I only talked to on the phone.
So the tuition and cost of books is payed for, I am getting bare minimum for support, but since I live at home it is totally doable. It will only be one year of making less then I did at 19, but potentialy, I will be making over 100k in a few years, so it is worth it.
Oh yeah and the course I am taking is Business Management. So off with the coveralls and on with the suit and tie.
I realized, after being a fabricator for the last 20 years, 75%-80% of my clothes are work clothes, so time to start buying the suits.:thumbup
I'm looking forward to this, it should be fun.:thumbup
arkansawer 04-21-2008, 05:04 AM Way to go. 75% of my clothes are work clothes as well. But they consist of khaki's and polo shirts.
So why so early on starting the school and not next semester?
waltman 04-21-2008, 05:11 AM Because my EI runs out in 4 weeks, but i actually didn't know this until last week,. Besides I want to go to school while I'm all geared up for it, I didn't want to have to find a job until the next semester and then potentialy get distracted or lose this motivation I have right now. It took me about 6 years to finally decide to do this life alterring decision to change carreers so I want to keep going while I have all this momentum. Besides the sooner I start school, the sooner I can start working in my new carreer.
arkansawer 04-21-2008, 05:29 AM Good point. I never thought about going in the summer. Everytime i thought about going back it was to get into the fall semester. By the time that rolled around i had already backed out.
Good for you for going back. Hopefully youll enjoy it and itll fly by for you. This going to be a 4 yr school right?

Business Management might be one the of the boring things I took while in school. It was a mandatory class, as I was going to school for accounting. Expect two things :
Business models that seem to work great on paper, but not in the real world
If there is any type of thesis paper that needs to be done, prep up on wanting to smash your head into a wall :banghead with how dull and boring most major business owners really are.
jackhart 04-21-2008, 11:30 AM congrats walt. that's really great news.
fwiw, three years of law school had basically very little to do with the actual practice of law. the "real world" is like that. practical experience counts for a lot. but you still gotta pay your dues in school anyway.

No it is only 1 year, EI wont fund the 2 year diploma, which is fine with me. Initialy I was looking to start in September, but when I saw this school offer a summer semmester I jumped at it and it helps that it is a good school with a reputation for being hard. So as long as I pass all 10 of my courses I...should be alright. I think it will be fun, since I'm the class clown and have had fun in all the workshops I've taken so far.

:banghead thanks for the heads up, really looking forward to it now:histerica
It was a tough decision trying to pick something I could handle and at the same time with the potential to make at least what I was making before my back finally said it was time to move on.

Thanks man, I now practical and reality are two totally different entities. I learned that many years ago when engineers draft something up and when I tell them it can't be done or that it will take way too long to make it practical, some of these guys give me a dumb look and say, "but it works on paper":doh0715:
I believe I already have the transferable skills needed to work in an office setting, I just need that certificate to show I know something about it and to be honest, I'm still not sure exactly what it is I want to do. At some point I would like to be an instructor for steel fabricating, or perhaps work for the government, they are in need of qualified staff, I will let fate decide.
JayYoTTU 04-21-2008, 08:33 PM I'm graduating with a BBA in Business Management this May. It's a good degree. Hopefully I have the same potential as you do to make $100K in a few years! :thumbup
Best of luck, bro. :beer

You lucky British Columbian b@$turd Waltman !
No French pre-requisite out there.
They may get the best candidate for once (an English speaking you), instead of the boss's buddy's nephew from St.Jerome who couldn't find his @$$ with both hands, in either language:thumbup
Great work, keep it up :beer

p.s./
100K and you'll be able to get Fireguy to re-wire your Bronco from end to end !

I hope you become influential enough to rescind official bi-lingualism outside Quebec and free the country from the enormous debt it's wracked up on us and continues to wrack up.
It would also be nice not to have to teach English speaking Canadians a dead language on a continent where 1 in 100 speaks French.

Oh, I promise you, if I can make a change like that, even if it costs a few lives (of my subordinants:toothless) I will do it. I can't tell you how it pisses me off to see the products on the shelves with the french side facing out. I swear, it seems like the stock boys are told to make sure french is facing out.
What is even worse, I am with Rogers for my home phone service and despite about 1/2 dozen calles to Rogers, it appears I have to listen to bi lingual when I first call for my messages....and I feel confident to bet $100 that if someone in Quebec calls their phone for messages, they get only french
:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:bang head:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead: banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:bangh ead:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead
Yeah, believe me six, if I could/can, I will!
EDIT so apparently, if I hit the bang head too much, the banned smiley comes up???????????

Yes I'd bet with you on "dat dare" bet Waltman
Don't it warm your heart to know our tax dollars go toward "language police" in Quebec ? Even the Nazis didn't have that.
Nothing makes me smile more than picking up an English only product here in Ottawa, and it happens more and more.
Tools and just about any-ting' automotive comes in unfettered by the Feds, thanks the free trade agreement, so it's in only the language of commerce......progress.....science.......medicine. ......education.......flight.......shipping......a nd yes you cheese eating retreat mongers even..... diplomacy now :chili:
English gains at a rate 10 times as French wains by twice that !:chili:
Learn it, love it and embrace it you elitist language fascists, cause' yours is on it's way out :chili: (not before it bankrupts Canada)
Sixlitre
Imagine the military or health care system we'd have if we could re-direct the money WASTED on official bilingualism to those efforts

What? You are saying you actually have products with only english written on them? It is law that there has to be both languages on any prudust that enters Canada for sale. I just can't imagine what it's like to go into a store and not have to turn it around to read the english side.
I agree, the money that Quebec drains from this country could be put to much much better use.
waltman 04-24-2008, 02:04 AM I picked up the 3 text books for the three classes I'm taking this semester...they are big:shocked and lack a lot of pics which means a lot of writing instead:cry
What have I done?:duh
ok I'm beginning to feel a little apprehensive.:doh0715:

Just keep picturing your 50 year old self in a warm, dry office with tightly dressed wimens wandering around, instead of the cold damp penetrating your knees and hips on the slab somewhere.
Motivation Waltman, you can do it ! Leave the outside crap to the Pepsi's

Dustin 04-24-2008, 10:48 AM but when you work inside you become a puss y :goodfinge.
I like when people give up working on cars and pick up an office job. a couple months later they are bitching about cutting their hands and getting dirty when changing their oil. any other day thats just normal....

Yeah, you got it. I am doing this because I injured my back in 2005 and it just kept getting worse. I decided it would be better to work in an office setting then be so crippled from pain that I can hardly move. Besides, I am good at making lemonade and with me being a comedian/prankster, I can make any work setting an enjoyable one.

School is Good! :toothless
...but seriously, best of luck in the new gig!
waltman 08-28-2008, 01:36 PM So I finished the first semester and did pretty good.:thumbup I got an A in Essentials of Management, an A in Orginizational Behaviour and a B+ in Human Resource Management:chili::chili::chili::chili:. I would have done better but didn't study as hard as I should have for the final. I'll be taking 4 courses this fall semester. What sucks though, is that I couldn't pick my courses until 3 weeks after it was allowed.I'm not sure exactly why, I think it has something to do with the students being there longer having first dibs. So anywaqys, in order to take the courses I wanted, all 4 of my courses are in the evening. That is good in that I can drop my kids off and pick them up at school during the day and take care of projects, but my social life is going to really suffer....social life:histerica
