View Full Version : some pix flying in the aztec twin (56k die)
jackhart 05-11-2008, 11:06 PM my father in law just upgraded from a cessna 172 (single engine 4 seater) to a piper aztec (twin engine 6 seater). this morning we flew from long island to block island (off the coast of rhode island in the atlantic ocean) for breakfast. it's about 90 nautical miles, we made it there in about 35 minutes. just some pix taking off after breakfast and flying over the island.
taken with crappy cell phone, sorry for the poor quality...

JoeBob1901 05-11-2008, 11:15 PM Looks pretty sweet! An expensive, but memorable breakfast! Good to see you're not all squirrelly about getting back up in the air after recent events.
kf4amu 05-11-2008, 11:42 PM Nice, what airports??

KFRG is Farmingdale on Long Island, where we took off from.
KBID is Block Island. The runway is only 2500' long, it is about as short as you would want trying to land a twin.
Gillamonster 05-12-2008, 05:34 PM looks like a great day! Is it a generally smooth flyer?
anyway, great pics
jackhart 05-12-2008, 07:55 PM well, it was smooth that day. no turbulence at all. it's also a more comfortable plane than the cessna 172, it's alot bigger, wider, roomier. alot more HP as well with the twin engines.

NICE! We fly in and out of Islip and New Haven. I'm overnighting in New Haven next week, I'll check it out as we fly over.
Looks like a fun area to fly around in. I love flying in the NYC area.

yeah, islip, class C airspace. we have to avoid that area. gets real busy too, it's a little stressful flying in the NYC area.

haha, a piper cub is pretty small. damn popular private plane though.

I love that shit. Coming from the north to join the Expressway Visual 31 to LGA, you split JFK and LGA...all kinds of Jetblue guys landing at JFK, gotta stay on your toes. They arent on LGA's frequencies but we're only a few miles away. Had a Airbus trying to make a tight turn that ended up not so tight and they strayed into LGA airspace in a hard bank. Just goes to show why you gotta pay attention all the time in those congested areas.
How is it out east along the island? Seems kinda uncongested and laid back.
kaudbron 05-12-2008, 10:56 PM i heard they arent letting props into lga cause they are too slowwwwww

ValkariaKid 05-14-2008, 12:58 AM Great pics!
I got my ppl way back when at 23N (Bayport Aerodrome). It's part of the class C exclusion 1NM SE of ISP. It's a great place to visit next time you're up. One sunday every month at the north end of the field the 'Antiquers' take out all their cool planes (tiger moth, Wacos, Stearmans, a few cubs and a bunch of antique airplanes). It's a great place to spend the day, and maybe even get a ride in a classic.
As you probably already know FRG (Republic) has a great restaurant called the 56th fighter group, where they have headsets that broadcast the tower's freq. They also have a few warbirds on static display out back.
At the north end of the field there's a museum that has a few cool flying and static warbirds on display. It's next door to Nassau Flyers Inc.
Another place to try is Belle's cafe just near the base of the tower at Gabreski (FOK).
I haven't flown around LI in about 7 years and I miss all the great places to get that $100 hamburger!
Have fun!

SSgtTEX 05-14-2008, 08:31 AM I love $100 hamburgers. We took a Cessna 310 up to Myrtle Beach from Montgomery once to eat at Dick's Last Resort...that was an expensive dinner. In total the group of us (5 total) dropped just over $800 combined. It was about 700 in aircraft rental and fuel from the base Aero Club. We have done that a couple times.
I got about 15 minutes on the stick of the 310...besides that, just the few hours logged in a 172. Speaking of which, i need to find my log book for when I can afford to get back into flying. Still have my student certificate, stays in my wallet.
rogertc1 05-14-2008, 09:56 AM My dad is 90 now and gave up flying when he hit 85. He rented 4 place Pipers mostly. We used to go up to to Wisconsin a lot and have breakfast at a grass strip with a family resturant right by it. Had to do a short field take off.
Have a lot of good memories.

Cool trip. Hope your father-in-law flys the Aztec a lot. With a twin engine airplane you really need to stay current. When all is well, they are a lot of fun. When it turns to crap, it will go to hell in a handbasket in a heartbeat.
