I was only stopped by a Ranger once, I was unwittingly somewhere I shouldn't have been, he told not to let it happen again. Since I usually have the wife and kids with me they just wave and drive by. Tread Lightly is always a good rule to follow.

Isn't Pine Barrens where they filmed that Soprano's episode where two of the idiots botched a russian mobster's execution and nearly froze to death overnight after they got lost ?

Yes sir, the Pine Barrens is a very big area, consisting of a few different State and National Forests.

Some people wanted to build houses there recently and there was a big blow up. I got into a cuss fight with the land use rep on Pirate because he was for building houses in the Pine Barren. My attitude is that if public lands get converted to dwelling and commercial, how does that help out door recreation and 4wheeling.

Watch your arse in Jersey. My Bronco would get me a ticket because my 32x11.5 tire maybe be almost and inch beyond the fenders. They let you in the state for free but they charge you to get out. :lowblow

That Sopranos Episode was titled "Pine Barrens" but it didn't look to me like it was filmed in the Barrens to me. Looked a little too well...not barren.

The Pine Barrens that I grew up by were nothing more than scrub pines on sandy soil not these older trees and rocks and so on that were in the epsiode.

Anyway, just wanted to throw that in!

I didn't know the Barrens were still open. We used to go up there from Maryland every so often. Kinda reminded me of a lunarscape when it snowed for some reason.

New Jersey: at least it's not New York.

i got dirrections from NJDEVIL1331.

turnpike south til exit 7, gets off at 206
206 south til u hit caranza rd. on your left, like 18 miles down.
keep goin down caranza rd. past the High school. past memorial then head in off one of the trails.

the trails are extremly tight though, both sides of my truck are really scratched up, Pinestiped as you would call it.

dont take the trail that goes along the tracks. gets way too skinny.

i ripped off my mirror, and jamned it into the side of my door,

also ****ed up my rear fender pretty bad when i hit a bump and my rear end shifted sideways in the sand, right into a tree.

this sounds strange, but i snapped the rear bolts that hold the tire carrier on.
dont know how i did that.

overall its a great place, but the trails are extremely tight.

Wharton is the biggest/best place that I know of. You want to head S on 206 until you get to the ranger station (on your left) across the street from Atsion Recreation Area. If you turn in at the ranger station, you will be on a dirt road that is passable by cars. If you go 2-300 feet past the ranger station on 206, there is another entrance on the left that you will most likely need 4x4 to get through. I've been wheeling there for years, and I have never seen rangers on those secondary trails. As long as your vehicle is registered and insured, that is all they really care about. They don't want quads and dirt bikes. It would be a good idea to bring a GPS, so you can find your way out once you are in. There are miles upon miles of winding trails, and it is easy to get disoriented.

There is another place that I go. You want to find the route 70/72 circle, and go about 2 miles east on 70. Turn left into Presidential Lakes Estates at the yellow blinking light. Stay on that winding street until it becomes a dirt road, and look for an large opening on your right. This is a section of Brandon T. Bryan (sp) State Forest, or the forest formerly known as Lebanon State Forest. I have never seen any rangers there. In fact, it is a popular place for the neighborhood quads and dirt bikes play on a regular basis. Some good whoopdees and small hills to climb.

About the Sopranos...they say that was the pine barrens, but is wasn't. There are no hills like that in the barrens. It is all flat, and consists of sugar sand, and pine trees. Come down and play in them for a couple hours, and you will see.

A word of advice for sugar sand...momentum is your friend. Do not stop in sugar sand, or you very well may get stuck, this stuff is soft and easy to dig.

Happy Wheeling
