View Full Version : two good off roading stories

My bronco had just been pulled out (by a tractor not the burb) and i was driving down a dirt road on a friends ranch. My friend was driving behind me in his chevy suburban. He pulls out beside me(off the dirt road and into a field) and we start to race. About 50 yards down the road there is a 3 foot tall "ridge"(i don't really know what to call it). We were going about 35 mph, and on the road where i was driving my bronco the bump was worn down to the height of a speed bump. However, off the road, the bump was definately big and unmistakeable. My friend drives off this ridge or bump going 35, he gets about 2 feet of air in his completely stock v6 burb. As i look out of the corner of my eye i see him in the middle of the air. His bumper hits first, the grille guard is knocked off and he ran over it.

It appeared to me that his front pass. side fender panel had a huge dent in it. There werent any trees or anything he could have hit within hundreds of yards. I try to open the pass. side door. It wouldn't open. The impact had shoved the panel backward and was overlapping the door. My friend opens it and it makes a huge THWACK.

Later that week, my friend tells me that he had a bent frame. But he was lucky that he didn't snap his axles, and is also lucky he had skid plates.

damage:bent frame
grille guard,
fender panel
chipped bumper
total:1000 i think

I never will let him drive me anywhere again

Now this next story isn't as good but i have some good pics of it and that make it all better.

My other friend with a F350 with 4" lift.

He decides to go through our usual creekbed. He looked at it for a second, decided to do it. No one was there to spot for him, this was a terrible decision considering the conditions. His 4 wheel drive was not working and he knew it, he had crappy tires, it had just rained all night long. He starts to go through it and gets stuck in the middle of the creek. Nothing broke except the wind shield wiper would go off every now and then.

I'll post pics in a while, once i can find them.

Why would they even bother making a v6 suburban?

sorry about the wait, go here for the pics: http://www.superford.org/registry/vehicles/detail.php?id=4400&s=16015#content
To give you an idea of how much water hes in, he has 4" lift and 35 in tires. Took us a few hours to get him out, and his truck smells really really bad.

Btw, i dunno if his burb really is a v6, thats just what he says, and he doesn't know anything about cars.

Yall like that? Ill be doing it again too, dont doubt me...

I'm just going to add a few things first, like swampers, and get the 4x4 fixed.

It still smells a little, but its going away. The windshield-wiper thing stopped, finally.

edit: By the way, the crappy tires I have, which really do suck, are BFG AT Baja KO's. They are the main reason I get stuck, other than my gay auto-hubs...

Forget the Swampers how about some pontoons.

To answer your question, Yes I like it. :thumbup You wheel like me. As for the smell, get some Auto Febreeze and spray the hell out of the jute and carpet. I was expecting to see someone in the bed of the truck with a fishing rod.

Ummmm, i would say its a little more then just tires, maybe 4 wheel drive perhaps? Also, arent you scared of gettin water in your airbox that deep? It would really suck if your engine decided to sieze up on you.

i doubt swampers would have make up for the n00b driver error in that situation.

burbs never came with a V-6 AFAIK.

also, how high are you breather lines, my friends jeep's werent high enough, and her rear end practically exploded, cause water got in the diff. cost her some $ to get that fixed.

About the burbs, yall are right, they never did come with v6s and his isn't, he saw the headers and thought it was a v6 because the middle two were together. :brownbag :slap

Weve been throught that section before, its not that bad, even at that height. It was a stupid mistake, but had his 4x4 been working it would have been fine. He has gone through there in 2wd before but the problem with this time was the height of the water. :twak :twak

Edit: what is AFAIK? (and) I know it may look like a N00B situation, but....

Dont call me a N00B, I'm not new to offroading. That area wasn't new to me either, as Dosdovi has stated, we have been through it plenty o' times, and in 2x4. Yes, swampers would have kept me out of that situation. Yes, 4x4 would have helped a whole lot too. Yes, I know where my breather tubes are, I extended them myself to the height of the air intake. Yes, they all were high enough. No, I wasnt worried. Yes, it was stupid. :duh And yes, I will do it again... :wacko

By the way, jumping vehicles is not too smart...
Can do a whole lot more damage than the water did.

I hope you weren't behind her :goodfinge

Andy351. I'm no Noob and I've been in water that deep. Stuff happens. I didn't sit in it that long, but I had 4wd.

AFAIK= As Far As I Know

i'm not saying going through deep water is a noob thing. but trying a deep hole without 4x4 or agressive tires, and then blaming it solely on the tires is just lame. some people need to admit when they made a noob mistake, got in over their heads and their vehicles capabilites and get over it instead of blaming it on the vehicle for getting them stuck.
By the way, jumping vehicles is not too smart...

yes it can, if you're not setup right. but i also know the capabilities of my truck, and i know that the amount of travel i have is pretty good.

RAWPOWER

It was deffinately within my capability level. I had been through it before (at least 15 times). This time the water and mud were a little deeper.

edit: Im not worried about the travel, its the axle. An F350 traveling at 30 mph driving of a pond wall (6') exerts 350,000 lbs on the front axle. If you tell me that thats not enough to snap it, then you should kill yourself. Yes, your bronco is a whole lot lighter than an F350.

Anyways, yours is obviously fine, because (assumingly) it is still rollin...

But that debate has been had on this board already. Any wheeling is good wheeling in my book.

nope, but pismos a 15 minute drive. i actually haven't been there in a month.

the hummer with the mattracks is owned by the hummer tours company. they basically take you out into the dunes for an hour and charge a butt load of money.
