Anyone wanna suggest some mufflers for the 429? I *thought* we were going next week to get true duals with some 40 series Flows, but dad's out there right now "fixing" the ghetto exhaust they rigged up with the cherry bombs and he told my brother "that'll hold 'er over for another month or so."

I told him I'd give him $350 to help with the exhaust because he told me it would cost close to $500 for the setup he wanted. He thought I was gonna pay for the whole thing, but $500 is all I have, I'm not using all my food and gas money on exhaust, and I need new clothes for starting school in March.

ANYHOW...those 40 series Flows are like $70 a piece, right? The new Super 40s with the Delta Flow technology are $110 I think. I don't know muffler brands other than Flows, and Borla.

Gimme some suggestions for getting an exhaust system for about $400 bucks. I'd like true duals with it coming out behind the rear tire, but I had thought about turn downs either just before or right after the rear end. How much more expensive is 3" pipe over 2.5"??

Oh and I don't want it obnoxiously loud. I wanna hear the cam lope at idle and I wanna get perma-grin from the big block rumble if I romp on it.

That's not too much to ask is it? :toothless :histerica

nothing will beat the flows

but i would make sure the exhiast exits after the rear tires, either at a 90 degree bend or a 45 degree bend

straight out and you will get fumes, dump it at the axles, you will also get fumes, and it will be pretty loud

dumped exhaust never sounds right, sound s out of tune if you will, the tail pipe tunes the exhaust, sound chages with the bends,

look at brass instrument,s you will get the idea, same thing

id say flows, origianal series 40

nothing beats it

oh, and 2 1/2'' duals should be good, be sure to do a cross over pipe or "H" pipe

Flowmasters are over rated... sorry... but for the money there are equal options... Flowmasters resonate UP through the vehicle... which is cool for about the first hour... then it's just plain annoying on the highway... other brands:

Flowtech: Terminators or Afterburners... Both great mufflers... and about $25 a piece less the Flows, and flow every bit as good. Terminators are known to flow a little better under WOT, I had them on the Mustang and was told they sound more like Roush' setup. Afterburners, about $40 each... ROCK!!! best performance muffler for the buck... If you're looking for pricey, try Ravens... sweet tone at idle, and just plain "YUCK FOO" under hard acceleration... pricey though. Dynamax make some sweet mufflers also, Borla SS series, Flowtech Warlocks if you want "cutouts" hmmmm... I'll have to find the flow and db level test that one of the Peterson mags did...

Hold that thought... ;)

I've got a 40 series on the '89 and it sounds pretty good at idle, but there's a certain RPM where it resonates and drives me crazy. So I turn the radio up. :toothless I didn't really want Flows because of that, but dad is the one that said 40 series Flows.

Back to the '78 - I'm actually surprised with the way it sounds after he "fixed" it. He just made the pipes longer, put the cherry bombs on it and turned it down right before the rear end. Sounds better than it did. It was too loud before because it exited right at the door. The steering is real loose, gotta fix that before I drive it awhole lot. So I'm in no hurry to get a real exhaust on it...yet. Thanks for all the information. :thumbup

jeremy has the magnaflow(i think) on his rig.
it sounds sweet. best sounding muffler i have heard on a bronco yet.

i have dynomax ultra flo round on mine. its loud. but doesnt have as nice as a tone as the magnaflow. i think they are pretty cheap too. mine in 3" was under 50 bucks at summit.

seriously--go w/ the flows if that's what you want. You're not going to be happy with anything else if you have your heart set on the flows... :shrug

I personally think Magnaflow puts out a great product for a decent price........and you can get 'em relatively small for tight areas.

But I also like my Magnaflow 'cause it's quiet............loud exhaust is for mullets and guys named Cletus :goodfinge

Look into the Summit brand of mufflers. I'm thinking of getting their Turbo muffler for my Ranger 5.0 swap, heard some good reviews about them and they're cheap.

Heh...cool, thanks for the offer. No reason for you to drive all the way out here to Marietta, my brother lives off Ridge Rd out your way and I'll probably be out there sometime either within the week, or next weekend. Lemme think about that...I'll get back to ya. :thumbup

Everybody else...thanks for the replies. It doesn't sound too terribly bad right now, so gives me some time to do some research and decide what I wanna go with.

I'm also at that point with my Bronco, and had WANTED to get a pair of borla Pro XS, but being the cheap F'er that I am... I'm going to get a pair of Summits. I had found a bunch of clips here http://ubb.mustangexhaust.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=8 - again, all small blocks - but I did like the SLP Loudmouth exhaust... too bad it's so F'in expensive

i got dual flowmasters on my 79... i believe they are 70 series with the delta flow tech.. got um for 39.99 or 49.99 a piece up here. I got flowtech headers and i love my exaust... not to loud, but strong sounding... nice and smooth, but growls when ya get on it. i had 40 series before and they were a bit ruffer sounding... and ive had cherry bombs and i didnt care for them... but my 70 series i love.

that data is for the most part pointless. all the mufflers aside from one are within 5 hp/ 7 tq of each other. NO one is going to be able to tell the difference. peak numbers also don't mean anything IMO. i mean, what good is a 5 hp gain in peak if you lose 15 hp at 1500 RPM? i love my Delta 40 Flowmaster, i constantly get compliments from other people, including fellow bronco owners. they really aren't that loud either and don't resonate that bad, especially if you get the Delta Flow ones.

uhmmm... personally, I don't like the sound Flowmasters make. If you like ti... great... but, She said she doesn't like the annoying 2100 RPM drone that flows are famous for... y'all like... great... it's your ears. I didn't run the tests, I just posted the results from a major magazines testing... It was posted for comparison purposes, nothing more. period!!!

And a Roush exhaust sounds a whole lot better than anything Flowmaster could ever dream up... ;) :goodfinge :goodfinge :goodfinge :toothless :rebelflag
