View Full Version : Next Colorado wheeling trip, July dates

Our recent "rougher" outing that was not stock friendly. We are now wanting to plan the next trip since we had such an outstanding time!!!!:beer:drinkbud:chili:
By the way, if anyone wants to know how to wheel a TTB, minor lift, 32" tire truck through about anything, we have a person on board you should speak with.:shocked
My input here is that we go back to the notion of a possible Fri-Sat or Sat-Sun run. This of course means camping for those that wish to.:chili:
I'm also suggesting that from my original post we look to run a couple of the lighter trails (ratings 2-6). We have been hoping to build a base of rigs we can look to for wheeling here. And I don't just want to limit it to the "I70 right up from Denver" corridor, but right now, that's all I can really manage. I'd still like to get to other places down by colorado springs and way more to the west, but for now I'd like to just get out locally and have some fun, with all levels of rigs invited (and of course they don't have to all be broncos).
The cool thing is we just ran Spring Creek, and right nearby are Bill Moore, Kingston, Jenny Creek?, and the guys mentioned a few others. All these 45 mins max from most locations around Denver.
In any case, When is the next wheeling trip? Looks like I can do the weekend of July 26, plenty of notice to everyone, so what do ye think?
Anyone see DC (aka Dangling Dave)???
What about you Larston??? Would love to see the Jeep!!
wileec 06-26-2008, 10:16 AM That one would probably be out for me, getting my kids back from camp that weekend. The 19th is good but it is your gig. I though you were getting a lot of responce for the 12th (also not good for me) but as we found on Saturday you do not need everyone everytime. That being said I would love to be able to go.
96blkbeauty 06-26-2008, 06:16 PM Its really hard to decide until closer to the date. I only get my schedule a week ahead with my current job so I won't be able to decide until then. But I would definitely be more down for a stock friendly trip plus camping over night and some barbecuing. And I know a few other guys on Ranger-Forums.com who would be down. But I won't be able to let anyone know until closer to the date.
bronc_17113 06-27-2008, 06:38 PM works for me bar any new breakage issues
Shadofax 06-28-2008, 12:09 AM well, I guess I'll just let this dog lay for now.
Aurorabusa 06-28-2008, 07:58 PM I have a broken axle ujoint and not sure when i will have money to fix it.
Larston 06-29-2008, 12:24 AM What about you Larston??? Would love to see the Jeep!!
Getting closer, I'm thinking it may be September due to money issues, though. I WILL start making these trips, just gotta keep working through issues :popc1: This thing is actually taking more work than the Bronco did.
A little sneak peek:
Front lift in, still on 31's:

It's looking like the Bronco under the hood. No FI yet, staying with a carb for now.

I was thinking about a run for that weekend too. I was thinking about Iron Chest and/or Grizzly Lake. I've never ran Grizzly & have been wanting to but I've done Iron Chest several times.
If that's an area that anyone might want to go to, Iron Chest is rated at an 8 & good ground clearance is a must. Grizzly is rated a 6 & I don't know anything about what it's really like but I want to find out. If a mixed group of rigs (stock to modified) want to go, there's
Tincup Pass rated 3
Boulder mountain rated 3
Mt Antero rated 4
Mt Princeton rated 3
all in that area. Meaning, there's trails for everyone, trails that can damage rigs & trails that might not damage rigs but still provide challenges & scenic adventures.
That's my suggestion anyway :D
Shadofax 06-29-2008, 01:12 AM sweet. I forgot your whole build plan now, seems to me you were going to keep it more stockish, yet you state it's on 31's for now in the pics....so I think you said you were looking for 33's? And lockers? Keep working, Sept. will be here before you know it.
Shadofax is currently sitting in the garage with most of the large charging cables pulled at this point. I bought all new 2Ga stuff from Ryan for charging, and had bought Slickerthanyou's old 200A large case 3g unit. I say old but my current 95A unit has been in the rig about 5 years now and I think bob's 200A unit can't be more than 4 yrs old. I tell you what, if you need good 2ga cable, and nice heavy duty ends and the solder bullets, and the heat shrink, his kit and instructions are beautiful. I'm a pro at it (I think) after doing about 5 of these ends at this point, very simple thanks to Ryan. I tell you what though, that negative cable to the frame and block was a PITA to remove off the block. It's just in a tough position to get at with any tool to remove the block bolt, and it was likely way easier with the SAS setup.
Aurorabusa, when did you break a front joint, just after missing us last weekend?
Are you running alloy stuff?

I'll have to go look these up on the internet and take a look. being newer in colorado I'm not familiar with these names....in the same area as Bill Moore, Spring Creek, etc. and would there be camping spots? I'd like to look at something less than an 8 this time, as I mentioned in the thread start, but hey if there are enough varied rigs we can certainly split to 2 groups and go after an easier and harder trail, folks can take their pick.
Aurorabusa 06-29-2008, 10:10 AM Yes just after missing you guys.I did the first obstacle and heard that old familier sound!!:cry Im running warn axles and ox ujoints.First one since i put them in 3or4 years ago so i guess thats better than every trip like before!!!

Those trails are in the Buena Vista area.......west of BV about 10 to 20 miles.

Yeah, stockish, that was the plan :histerica I was hoping to just do the engine and trans. If it would have fit with the stock drive shafts that would have been it this year and I'd be on the trail. I ended up moving the transfer case too far so I decided to do the suspension at the same time so I only have to buy shafts once. So, engine, trans, transfer case, both axles (gears, lockers, alloy shafts, 35" tires), suspension, steering, power brakes, hydraulic clutch, custom exhaust, floor pan mods, and on and on later, here I am. :banghead Oh well, it's gonna be a killer rig when I get done, but it'll still look like every other jacked up Jeep on the road.
Larston 06-29-2008, 10:50 AM We did a trip a couple years ago by BV that was a blast. Big loop, Hancock Pass, side trip to the Alpine Tunnel, north to the town of Tin Cup, and back over Tin Cup pass to St. Elmo. It's real easy to do in a lazy day trip if you get on the trail by 8:00 or so. You can get over there in a couple hours on Friday afternoon to set up camp, do the trip, run Princeton or Antero on Sunday morning, and be back to Denver before supper time.

Any pics? Would love to see a broke Ox joint. So when it let go did it take out your Warn axles?
I can't imagine breaking one of my superjoints unless I was spinning a front tire and then it suddenly gained traction....those joints, not only being alloy, are also really beefy compared to your standard ujoint with rollers.
I was admittedely wondering if I'd hear any front popping on a few of the rocks in the rock garden (ARB engaged of course), but no issues.

If i remember right rodney is detroit locked front and rear. so that'll do it.
bronc_17113 06-29-2008, 10:03 PM I think just rear
Shadofax 06-29-2008, 10:55 PM I think just rear
No, it appears he's locked at both ends with detroits.
Aurorabusa 06-29-2008, 11:40 PM I will take a picture of my broken ox joint.I think it broke the retaining clip inside and let the cap thing slide out.I dont know if it damaged my axleshaft or not.I have not taken it apart yet.
bronc_17113 06-29-2008, 11:40 PM No, it appears he's locked at both ends with detroits.
well hell i been wrong before
Aurorabusa 06-29-2008, 11:41 PM Yes i do have both detroits.Wish i had a selectable up front.
Shadofax 07-03-2008, 04:24 PM Any pics yet of that toasted OX? Just curious how/where it broke.
Aurorabusa 07-04-2008, 10:00 AM Yes,that is a crack in the top.Looks like the clip broke inside and allowed it to walk out.It also cracked my Warn stub shaft.Damm damm damm dammhttp://www.supermotors.net/getfile/649896/fullsize/oxjoint-003.jpg
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/649897/fullsize/oxjoint-004.jpg

Shadofax 07-04-2008, 10:56 AM Hmmm, not sure I understand how the caps are held in with these....are these the pins that are then screwed into the trunnions on the ujoint which is what is holding the cap in? If so, then the ox does not use full circle retaining rings?
that's a bummer on the warn shaft though. Was afraid of that. Any time you lose a joint it's very likely it took at least one shaft (the ears) with it. But if this used to happen to you a lot with stock stuff I'm singing to the quire.
but hey, on the bright side the stub is cheaper than the inner. And won't ox warranty the joint? Maybe not if it's been 3-4 years.
Aurorabusa 07-05-2008, 03:11 PM The ox joint has a weird internal retaining clip.the side of the ujoint body has a screw on cap where inside the joint is the retaining clip. You would have to see it.I think there is only a year warranty on them but they did last a long time versus stock stuff.I think i will try a CTM joint now.Figures it would happen during prime 4-wheelin season!!!

Just my opinion, research all four first:
ox
CTM
Yukon Superjoint
and 300M ...what the heck are they called again...?? eidt: longfields?
last one states it's testing proves it is stronger than all the rest. As I recall pricing was reasonable as well. Basically superjoints are the cheapest, then ox/300M about the same, then CTM
I actually like my superjoint design better than CTM and when I was shopping they were $20 less than ox, and like $80 less than CTM.
If you do research, post up on what your thoughts are.. it's been a few years for me, but I will bring back all my notes on each and why I chose superjoint. Mine have been in a little over 2 years now, and my iroks are a bit smaller than your 38's, plus the ARB, but no issues thus far.
I certainly can see you opting for what once was the best joint out there (CTM), it's just that there are some interesting facts about some of the newer joints you should consider (not to mention cost).
Larston 07-06-2008, 01:14 AM I ran CTM's with Warn shafts in my D44 incarnation. It was a pretty tough combination. AFAIK, CTM is still the top dog in the D44 axle, but there are better joints for rigs with more street/trail use (which Mark found out.) I'm currently running Alloy USA 4340 shafts and Alloy USA super joints. There has been some good press on them over the last few months.
Aurorabusa 07-06-2008, 08:15 AM Thanks for all the input you guys,I will do all the research i can.The internet is cool for stuff like that and seeing what works for other people.I know too well that its not worth using stock stuff unless its a spare axle to get you home.An ARB would surely help in the front but thats a big chunk of money for a cheap mofo like myself.
302Army187 07-15-2008, 09:31 AM hey guys, im located in denver, by hampden and i-25
i need to find some places to take this truck off road, but im almost stock, so nothing crazy!
bronc_17113 07-15-2008, 09:52 AM you can do most things u have the balls to take it on within reason if you don't care about body damage. Try traildamage.com ur prolly good up to about a 5 or 6
302Army187 07-16-2008, 02:21 AM i dont care about body damage, well, holes in the side wouldent be to fun :)
but id love to see what this truck can do!
the only truck ive owned that i went off roading in, was a 97' explorer 4x4 sport, with stock height, and tire size.
thing was scraping the frame on everything! lol!
Warrlord 07-18-2008, 09:47 AM Looks like I'm out for the weekend of 26-27. We got a new Saturday work schedule yesterday. Longer hours on Saturdays & more Saturdays to work now :cry
