Hey guys, Having some trouble with my M5OD shifter. It starts messing up, it

feels really sloppy. Happened last december and my mechanic had to go on a

discontinued ford parts website to get the parts to fix it, and then he couldn't

get the new pins, so he had to epoxy the old pins back in, but that doesn't

seem to have worked to well. :banghead Now i tried searching everywhere for a

shifter for my truck, but according to just about everybody they never even

made manual bronco's in the 80's or 90's. However after it happened last time

i did a bunch of research and found out exactly what model tranny i had, the

M5OD, and since it started happening again I tried searching for a shifter

again and found one. Heres the link

Just wanted to see if you guys had any similar

experiences or any opinions on whether or not this shifter would actually

work. Would be a plus if you've changed out a shifter before and could tell me

how difficult it would be to put it in myself. I need to get this issue resolved

so any help you guys could give me is totally 100% appreciated. Even if its to

just tell me i'm a dope and should just get my mechanic to fix it again. Thanks

a lot.

I have the same transmission in my F-150. I had to put new bushings in the top loader on mine but if u had to epoxy the pins in urs might be too far gone. I'm pretty sure the hurst shifter mounts on top of where the old shifter is now with a completely new pivot ball mechanism. Changing out the shifter is easy. 4 phillips screws on the boot, lift up the corners of the rubber to see them. Then to get the stick off, back off the nut, I think it's 15mm then screw it on the oppisite side of the stick where u took it off to "pull" the pin out. U'll understand better when u see it. then theres three torx head screws to get the inner seal plate off. The pivot ball just pulls right out then. Oh ya make sure it's in neutral with the parking brake on nd the wheels blocked before u start anything.

If u need help i can take pics of mine if u need it.

an m5od is a ranger tranny, i know for a fact a 93 ranger xlt 3.0 uses it, look for ur pins under that instead of the bko

Same thing happened to mine. I didn't feel like ****ing with the pins and finding discontinued parts so I just stuck a Hurst in it. It was only $220 too which ain't bad for a super tight and solid shifter and you don't have to mess with a fix that probably won't work well for long.

The ranger uses the M5ODR1 while the F-150 uses a M5ODR2. Theres slight differences between them including the toploader. Thats y theres a different part number on the shifter for the Ranger. http://hurst-shifters.com/BIILLLLET-PLLUS.

Hey Mike. What are those knobs for mounted right inside the door on the floor in ur truck?

Hey guys, thanks a lot. Ordering my hurst shifter right now. Just curious though, does it interfere with the center console at all? or the dash? Don't think it does but just want to make sure....Also was curious about those buttons at the base of ur driver seat is too. Thanks again.

I had this happen to mine a couple years ago. Took it to the shop and they replaced the shift tower washer, both shaft seats, shift tower shaft, and shift tower boot and it fixed the problem. It was damn near impossible to find the gears beforehand, now everything is nice and tight and it shifts great.

Hey Mike. What are those knobs for mounted right inside the door on the floor in ur truck?
They are for the air lockers. They were originally designed as dash-mounted air system valves for a truck, but they work even better for an ARB air locker.

I don't have a flip down console so I can't say, but it probably won't hit. My F150 seat has the lift out cup holder on the front down on the floor, and when in 2nd and 4th gear the shifter just bearly contacts the front edge of the cup holder. I can only use the right side cup holder because any can or whatever in the left one and it gets knocked over when in 2nd gear.
I have a 2" body lift, so thats part of the problem.

Thats in 4th gear which is the lowest the shifter goes. You probably have a different seat since this is an F150, so base any clearance judgements off the T-case shifter or whatever. The seat is fully back to the rearmost position, which again, may be different between a Bronco and a truck. Up in 1st, 3rd and 5th, the shifter is only about 6 inches higher (guessing) so it doesn't come close to the dash. I know this one is a lot lower down in those upper gears then what the factory shifter was. Its got a shorter throw ( I think its 30% shorter) so thats why.

3rd gear, in the highest position. You can see how short the throw is. I may have even overestimated it at 6"

is that shifter any longer or shorter than stock mike?

Its probably about the same. Remember I have a 2" body lift on there so it may look a little shorter.

Thanks a lot for the detailed pictures. I ordered mine 2nd day air since shipping was free and 15 bucks for 2nd day air shipping is really what i expected to pay for ground shipping anyway. I think I'm going to do a tech-write up on it, with as many pictures as i can manage to take, even though it may seem very easy. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Hey guys. Just wanted to update everyone on the shifter. Hurst shifter is in and running great. Unfortunately I didn't get the shifter until 6:30 at night, and I had already taken my shifter out for a faster install. It also started raining so I really couldn't take the time I wanted to to do a tech right up. The removal was mad easy, and the install really wasn't that bad. For anyone interested though, the shifter did come with a complete installation manual with detailed pictures and it was pretty helpful. The part number is 391 5025, and it works for any truck with the M5OD R2 tranny. Thanks again for everyones helpful advice. Maybe we could add this hurst shifter to the Tranny thread since all the parts are discontinued by ford and this shifter is the only way I found to fix it after a couple days of research.

Its a tight sumbitch too ain't it. After a year of use it loosens up a little bit, but its still always going to be tighter then the Ford shifter was when it was new.

Yeah. They must have put a mad hard spring in there. My dad used to drive the truck until i stole it from him a couple of years ago, And i let him drive it. He wasn't sure if he was getting it into 1st gear because of the short throw and because of how hard you have to pull to the left. Its sweet though, shifts beautifully now.

Actually I was able to get the parts I needed for the shifter from my local Ford dealer (well my dad picked them up and is mailing them to me). Anyone else that has that problem might be able to check with Titus Will Ford online (google it) and check the parts department. I think the parts were $50.

I have the same problem. Just ordered the parts from allstategear.com. Just call them up and they will send it out. Shipping for me was like $8 or so. $22 total.

Here is a pdf listing of the parts.
