So,

I got a virus of some kind on my computer. It is not horrible, but is pissing me off. Basically whenever I turn my labtop on it changes the background to a pic of a you have spyware warning, and disables my wireless connection.

I know somehow you can reset your computer to revert to settings of a previous date. but i can not find how to do this. I am not sure if it will work, but thought it would be worth a try. Anyone know what folder/option it is under.

Sorry if I didn't describe that very well. Thanks in advance for any help.

P.S for those who are going to ask, I am on my work computer and not my personal one at home.....

I think you may have had to set that reset point on your computer. Now your only hope is to reinstall your OS. That may or may not get rid of the virus. Download spyware terminator and AVG antivirus free edition and see if they can catch it.

Yeah, definitely try an antivirus program first, a lot of newer viruses attack restore points so even if you do restore it to a previous state, you'll still have the virus.

I recommend Avira (http://www.free-av.de/en/index.html) as the antivirus, and Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) for spyware.

Cool beans guys.

I will download them onto my other computer and them flash drive them over.

Trouble is my original software was thrown away by my step-brother:banghead:smilie_slap:lowblow.

I was in Boston when we had to move to a different apartment, so I paid him $200 to cover my share. he threw the box away with all my software.

If you see me online tonight that means you were instrumental in helping me.:thumbup

Programs> Accessories> System tools> System restore You can give it a shot but a lot of malware/spyware will delete your old snapshots so you can't restore.

when you start the cp one of the first few screens it will say at the bottom "f10" or something like that to restart your os.

System restore is probably the worst thing windows ever did.

If you restore your system to an earlier date you will have system and personal applications that won't work if you installed them after that date, it also doesn't delete anything. It won't get rid of spyware, it won't get rid of a virus, it will quiet the virus or spyware for a while, but the programmers who made the virus or spyware are smart enough to root the file so that it doesn't go away with a system restore.

System Restore should be an absolutely last ditch attempt in order to get the system operating again, if your system is booting and at least running, your best bet is to try to remove all the malicious software prior to doing a system restore.

Get your system to a point at which you like it and it no longer has malicious software in it and do a complete registry back up.

Don't run two ant-viruses at once. Contrary to popular belief, most anti-viruses will detect another anti-virus as a virus and spend most of it's time trying to diffuse the other anti-virus.

www.ccleaner.com <~~~registry repair tool and system cleaner

www.AVG.com <~~~ free basic anti-virus that will keep a good portion of the nasties out.

www.adaware.com <~~~free diagnostic tool to detect and remove adware

www.spybotsearchanddestroy.com <~~~free diagnostic tool to detect and remove spyware.

Update windows. A lot of people bitch about all the updates and hotfixes that come out, but a good majority of them are security patches, they're making an attempt to keep your operating system somewhat safe

Regardless Rob it has worked for me in the past. But if it can be run Imediately start doing the spyware/virus scans.

also try http://superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html , i have tried them all and this one performs again and again, if its changing your background it probably not a virus but malware/spyware/trojan/hijacker/etc etc etc

i know i sound like a broken record but this is the best software i have ever used

I kept trying to use this and it would ask for me to buy the license when it came time to remove the spyware.

I updated my symantec Anti-virus, ran it, and it seams to have taken care of the issue for now.....

i didn't mean to sound so harsh in that, i am sure it did work. The problem is that it clouds your registry with files, which will make the computer run slower in the long run. It's a band-aid fix.

The best thing to do is remove the spyware/adware/virus and then create a back up and to always *cough*keep whatever anti-virus you have updated *cough*
