Head southeast to the Panamint Mountains near Death Valley. A lot closer then Big Bear, no traffic and a lot more fun.

D-Diesal,
Access to the Panamint Mountain range is off highway 178. Look for Ridgecrest/NAS China Lake, follow 178 and you will go through a town called Trona, this the last town with gas and grub that you will go through. Follow 178 north and look for a turn off to the right with a marker for "Ballarat". Follow the dirt road east to the ghost town of Ballarat. This is your jumping off point for the various trails in the mountains. Take plenty of water and food. There 5 cabins in the mountains that are maintained by various clubs and people. No cost, no reservations, first come, first serve. Briggs Camp is the best. Best time to go is October to April as weather is cooler. Average temp is 70's during the day, 30's at night. Watch your weather, last time I went, had snow at 4000', but melted over the next 3 days. This is also the area where Charlie Manson was caught (Golar Wash). Trails are rough in spots, but passable. Go to Goggle and type in "Surprise Canyon" or "Panamint Mountains" or "Ballarat" and you will drag up all kinds of info. Area is full of old gold mines to explore but you won't find much gold. Best to take two or more vehicles just in case, it's a long walk out. Have fun, take your time and enjoy. Hope this helps you out, any more questions, drop me a line.
