View Full Version : Manual Hubs
MYXD40 12-26-2008, 02:04 AM Hey guys in the Denver area! Let me start out by saying, I'm not mechanic by any means!! But I'm not completly clueless when it comes to working on my two trucks.
I was wondering if anyone(s) in the area would like to help me install manual hubs on my Bronco. I would do it myself if needed, but I honestly don't want to screw something up. My Titan may be going bye bye soon, thus leaving me with only my Bronco for transport.
Plus I am always stock full of beer!
Probably be 2-3 weeks from now..
Let me know :beer
wileec 12-26-2008, 12:22 PM where are you at I am sure we could get something together. Do you have a garage yet?
MYXD40 12-26-2008, 02:15 PM I'm at Parker and I225 (Aurora/Denver border)..and for a more exact location, Parker and Havana
And yes I do. I have 3 spaces side by side in my parking garage..and stays around 65 durring winter.. 70 durring summer. Perfect for working on trucks :)
wileec 12-26-2008, 02:45 PM That is going to require some planning you are a long way south. But still possible.
MYXD40 12-26-2008, 02:54 PM That is going to require some planning you are a long way south. But still possible.
Uhh yeah pretty much LOL But its not TOO far south.. 15 minutes from my place to downtown.
I was going to do this last year but just got too busy. And back then I lived at Vista Ridge (Highway 7 and I-25)!! And your lil sidebar information says you live in Erie which was right down the street
wileec 12-26-2008, 03:20 PM That would have been real easy. I am in Vista.
MYXD40 12-26-2008, 03:22 PM Really? I may have been your neighbor.. dogwood circle. I wasn't there very long though. It was just a rental house for about 3 months (house sold off 136th and Holly in thornton)
wileec 12-26-2008, 03:25 PM We are on the west side right by the airport.
Shadofax 12-26-2008, 10:44 PM so you have auto hubs right now and want to swap to manuals?

MYXD40 12-29-2008, 09:15 PM so you have auto hubs right now and want to swap to manuals?
Yeah. Not that I dont like auto hubs, its just that I hear bad things, and last winter I was having a lil bit of trouble getting the damn thing out of 4wd
Shadofax 12-29-2008, 10:11 PM Yeah. Not that I dont like auto hubs, its just that I hear bad things, and last winter I was having a lil bit of trouble getting the damn thing out of 4wd
Auto hubs in ford broncos just plain suck. I had so many issues with mine. Since moving to manaul hubs back in '97, I then only ran into electric Tcase issues, and since rebuilding a manual 1356 unit and putting that in a couple years back, it could not be any more reliable.
bronc_17113 12-29-2008, 10:33 PM i have a manual 1356 i may be willing to sell
MYXD40 12-29-2008, 10:35 PM i have a manual 1356 i may be willing to sell
What exactly is a manual 1356...
monkey4life 12-29-2008, 11:02 PM I actually need to do the same thing. I have all the parts and tools we would need, and no serious life right now lol. I think between the two of us we could manage to figure it out.
Shadofax 12-30-2008, 12:42 AM What exactly is a manual 1356...
Instead of a pushbutton/electric shift, it is the "old" floor mount manual stick:
here I was before...forget about the ARB locker switches, to the right there you will see the usual 4x4 and low switches to engage an electric unit:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/321776/fullsize/110_1015.jpg
After I bought a '95 manual Tcase and refreshed it, I installed it instead of my stock electric Tcase (both 1356), and then installed the manual linkage needed instead of the electric motor:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/310649/fullsize/110_1002.jpg
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/310650/fullsize/110_1003.jpg
So, those push button 4x4 switches on the dash send electrical signals, (via lots of wires) to a computer, and then down to a motor on the back of the 1356 transfer case. This motor then engages 4x4 or low. The issue is that 1) electrical stuff can go bad, moreso than mechanical IMO, 2) electrical is hard to diagnose, 3) electrical is susceptible to moisture, and 4) if electrical goes bad,see 2 above, whereas manual shifting to 4wd is pretty strait forward...if it aint in the simple pull back shifting, it's in the case.....whereas with electrical it's like "well, let's diagnose the electrical stuff first (outside the case) and see if something is wrong".
1356 borg warner cases internally are stout units for chain driven. about the best unit you would want.
fire bronco 12-30-2008, 12:56 AM And incase you weren't sure on the 1356... That's the transfer case. A Borg Warner 1356. I think I spelled that right.
Shadofax 12-30-2008, 01:12 AM And incase you weren't sure on the 1356... That's the transfer case. A Borg Warner 1356. I think I spelled that right.
That's right. I kept this simple and am assuming you know something about how the whole 4wd operates on a bronco. If not, post up and we'll explain, it's really rather simple.
bronc_17113 12-30-2008, 03:56 AM if u guys dont have the socket ofr the hubs let me know and u can come down and borrow one. i'm pretty sure i have one in my toolbox lol
MYXD40 12-30-2008, 06:22 PM I actually need to do the same thing. I have all the parts and tools we would need, and no serious life right now lol. I think between the two of us we could manage to figure it out.
Well that's perfect! If we can get the other guys to help join, by all means lets have a hang out! If not, then we can help eachother out!
I also think while I'm doing the hubs, I'll be replacing my rotors and pads at the same time (warped from hard braking with a 6x12' trailer over a 1200 mile trip)
:beer
MYXD40 12-30-2008, 06:24 PM I dont know too much about the Bronco, but I'm learning all the time. And working on the trucks by myself most the time. I kind of enjoy it, but mostly, its a neat hobby.
Thanks for telling me what a 1356 is.. now it all makes sense! lol

Just think.. You're learning more and more. Soon in a few years you'll know everything about your bronco.. Though it's not really a good thing cause it just makes me want to make mine bigger and better.
MYXD40 12-30-2008, 06:37 PM Exactly! As my mom told me, I am to never sell/trade in the Bronco. have it crushed, or pass it down to my kid. Plus parts are cheap for it, and eventually it'll be a collectors item!!
Spectre 12-30-2008, 06:38 PM The only collecting our bronco does is dust and spiderwebs. LOL
MYXD40 12-30-2008, 06:38 PM They sell WARN manual hubs at the local Checkers auto store..which kit do I need??
MYXD40 12-30-2008, 06:39 PM The only collecting our bronco does is dust and spiderwebs. LOL
haha yep! I washed/wax my Bronco about a month ago, garage kept. And it still got dusty/dirty!! And I dont even drive the sucker!!!

Good stuff. Lets see if we can get some more 'experienced' members to help us out...if not I'm still down for tearing into it.

I just got manual hubs from a member here on the forum, sent the check out today, so I should be getting those by next friday! Then I'm free to do them anytime after I recive them!

bronc_17113 12-31-2008, 11:49 PM suite yourself
MYXD40 12-31-2008, 11:56 PM speaking of intelligent..why would I drive all the way up to foco to change out my hubs when I can do it at my house?? :doh0715:
bronc_17113 01-01-2009, 12:01 AM just offered my knowledge and tools i dont typically come to denver to play mechanic for someone els uless they are a good friend or they are doing something i would like to learn how to do.
Shadofax 01-01-2009, 12:05 AM speaking of intelligent..why would I drive all the way up to foco to change out my hubs when I can do it at my house?? :doh0715:
well ok, so your post 25 says something different, can you do the work yourself? You seem rather agitated at Don there, any reason why, he just seemed like he was offering to help, like he always seems to do with locals?
If you guys want to do this yourself, that's great. hubs, rotors, wheelbearings, etc. are not difficult. You really don't need someone "experienced" there. Let us know when you plan to do it, and then post up if you have any problems or questions....ESPECIALLY with torque specs on wheel bearings...don't know how many times that has gotten F'd up by people. And good luck :beer
bronc_17113 01-01-2009, 12:08 AM Mark I have bashed him in a few threads but when it comes down to it I'm willing to help just about anyone if they are willing to behave proper at my house. Especially considering my family lives here

I've pulled the stuff apart and put it back together before, just never did the swap. I can do it in 2 hours at my house and do it right.
XD, I respect 17113 for a good reasons. He's a stand up guy, and is always offering to help when needed. You should at least try and be civil.

I understand. I have seen you several times in the last year or two offer to help locals.
These might be threads related to carrying firearms? I think you know how I am about that, but in any case if anyone needs help, you can post up and we'll answer. Auto to manual conversion was a LOOOONNGG time ago, but if you wanna talk about hubs, rotors, replacing bearings, races, spindle bearings, etc, I'd be happy to help if needed. 2.5 hrs and counting:beer
wileec 01-02-2009, 09:14 AM speaking of intelligent..why would I drive all the way up to foco to change out my hubs when I can do it at my house?? :doh0715:
Because a lot of the flks who have offered help live a long ways from Parker. It is kind of tough for a bunch of us to drive that many miles to help out a fellow Bronco driver. Splitting the differance would be easier for us folks way up north to handle.
As Mark said the job is not real big and it has been a LOOONG time since I swaped out the autos. But it is not hard and has been a trail fix in fairly short time.
The link that Don posted will make things real easy, just remember that if you have a 5 bolt auto hub you do not need the conversion kit...just make things that much easier.
landshark99 01-02-2009, 01:15 PM I just had my autos swapped out for manuals last week in my 94, seems pretty straight forward, didn't do it myself however, but probably should have. I would be willing to lend a hand and learn some things as well if there's room. Looking to get some work done on my bronco and the more knowledge i can get from you guys the better.
I live near I-25 and University so kinda central...
POTTER 01-02-2009, 01:43 PM just had this change done myself...blew out the auto's last week in the snow (or before the snow, not sure)...best small mod I have done yet...went with the Superwinch manuals.

I would perfer to have someone there to help so I know what I'm doing, but I have no problem doing it myself when it all comes down to needing to be done. Heck I repaced the valve cover gasket on the passanger side by myself..a nightmare but I did it lol ..Just took 6 hours :doh0715:
I just won't be called a "thug" based on the fact I actually have good credit, and make good money to afford nice things, AND how I carry my firearm. I think it's immature and actually kinda funny :toothless
Anywho I would appreciate anyones help and I'm really a nice guy to hang out and be around and I try to offer as much helping info I can just to fit in
I mean I helped this old woman the other day lift a big box of something or another she bought at Wal;)Mart into the back of her car.. THUG LIFE!

fire bronco 01-02-2009, 03:55 PM Changing out hubs isn't an issue at all.. if it's just the locking mechanism... 10 min job perhaps if you don't have the 3 bolt autos... But doing bearings, changing rotors, etc... not a big deal, just add some time. I'm always down to lend a hand, shouldn't be an issue at all.
poopy_pants 01-02-2009, 08:29 PM If you drove up to Don's house I'd help. But really one person is going to be the only one doing anything as it is a one person job at most. If you just pay attention to how stuff came out, and actually read the directions as to how stuff goes in, you really cannot screw this job up.

So did you get these? Still need help? I would be willing to donate garage space if you are willing to drive to Erie. Just need to work out a good weekend time.
I am curious however what happened to the pair you bought last spring
you still have auto hubs? switch them bad boys out for some manuals
Looks great though
I bought them suckers early this spring..just no time to really put them on. Plus I'm waiting for when I get new rotors and pads. They are comming though, trust me! After this past winter..what a PITA :banghead
Not trying to be a dick but...

I did buy them. But unfortantly when I moved this past may they either got lost, or my old roomy took them. I have the box though which is the weird thing. Though a box doesn't do much for me. I also lost the harnes and dash cover for my Titan for an aftermarket radio. Only thing I could think.. they are in storage. Much easier to buy another set, then spend a day looking through a storage!
I havn't done them yet. I may hold you up to that offer. My buddy I think wants to help me. He loves working on Fords..but he works odd hours
wileec 01-12-2009, 05:32 PM I am available most weekends. Let me know I think I have all the tools needed.
