Hey guys this is my first post on here. I'm asking for a friend that isn't familiar with message boards.

I tried some searches but had no luck, I'm also searching on fordforums.

He's got an automatic that won't shift out of first until he gets to 25-30 mph.

What could be the problem? What are the possible solutions?

I don't know anything about fords or their common problems, so any info would be help! As you can see in my username I'm a Mitsubishi driver.

Thanks

ok just the tranny type does not really help what year is the vehicle, engine size, with bronco is it? is it the little one or a fullsize and i have never heard of a atx tranny

My C-6 tranny did that once when I left the vacuum line disconnected from the modulator. So that's what I'd check first, the modulator & the vacuum line that connects to it.

What's ATX? Need more info. What vehicle, year, engine, trans?

It is a full size bronco, on the 3000GT/Stealth forum we abbreviate "automatic transmisstion" with "ATX" so that's what i mean there.

As for tranny type or model year, i'm not sure. I've never seen it, he isn't driving it. Its a guy who just started working with me and we were talking about it. But it is a full size.

I wan't to say that it is a late 80's model.

i don't know what the modulator is or where it is, but i'm sure i could figure it out with a shop manual, a little more info on this would be helpful.

This will only be the case if it's a C-6. The modulator valve is on the rear pass side of the trans. It mounts directly to the trans at one end and the other end has a vacuum line hooked to it. There is a diaphram in it. You need to make sure that the vacuum line is hooked up, that you actually have vacuum in the line(it could be plugged or broken off up closer to the engine), and pull the modulator off and hold the vac port down, if trans fluid pours out of it then you need a new one. Again this will only apply if it's a C-6 trans(3 speed and no O/D).

Obviously check the fluid and filter, change them if you haven't already, that would be my first course of action. Then check vacum and all that.

an atx is the front drive version of an aod, so that doesn't make sense, if it is an aod, it won't have a kickdown or a vacuum modulator. AOD's use TV (throttle valve) cables. look in a shop manual to correctly set this up, it can be a little tricky.

Yes that is the first thing.

What does aod mean? are you saying that his truck might not be a model that has a vacuum modulator? and in that case it uses TV cables?

I read something else that said you can check for vacuum leaks by passing some propane around the throttle body and intake plenom and related vacuum hoses. If there is a leak then the propane will be sucked in and the rpm's will rise.

I'd pull the pan and tighten up all the valve body screws and do a filter change.

There's two automatics offered in the late 80's- either the 3 speed C6 or the four speed overdrive AOD.

AOD=Automatic OverDrive.

Find your year and click on the transmissions, then compare the oil pan shape to see what transmission you have.

Ok i found out it is an 87. 302 engine if that matters. It looks like it is the AOD/F10D
