View Full Version : whos up for some winter wheeling
wileec 01-23-2009, 01:11 PM I just saw some video of Chinaman Gulch (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=1) from 1/17 looks very passable.

Other choice would be Slaughterhouse Gulch (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=2)
http://www.traildamage.com/trails/slaughterhouse_gulch/041120/jon_in_the_mud_part_1.jpg
Watching the video I saw made me really want to get out.
I would hope for a Sunday in Feb. But I am sure I could get off on a Sat. if there was more interest for that day.
wileec 01-23-2009, 01:16 PM Don missed your post earlier in the MnG thread. I stopped reading that when...well you know.
bronc_17113 01-23-2009, 01:53 PM no worries man
slaughterhouse February 28th
will be a lot more mild than carnage was last yr but mild body damage is still possible due to snow etc...

Hefty 01-23-2009, 03:06 PM FINALLY. I'm game when where I'll be there. Chinaman gultch sounds like fun. Lots to play on. Body damage very possible, sliders definately recommended but I guess there are easier routes around most of the hard stuff. Snow isnt bad there. Just drove to Buena Vista on sat and it was clear.
bronc_17113 01-23-2009, 04:14 PM just rememebr with chinamans u preclude anyone witha near stock truck that doe not have a desire to mess it up
Everything i hear is tat it is worse than it has been in the past
86bronco64 01-23-2009, 04:48 PM Hmm... If I can get it off I'm in. That is, of course, if I am allowed to bring a Jeep.
bronc_17113 01-23-2009, 04:48 PM I couldnt care less what u bring myself didnt you have your bronc up until recently?
Hefty 01-23-2009, 05:42 PM You bring your Jeep and I'll bring my heep. My brother might show up in his toyota. I haven't been to Chinaman in years so I cant remember a whole lot about it. I know it can get intence at times but I thought there were almost always bypasses.
wileec 01-23-2009, 05:50 PM It seems that there are chicken routes for all but 1 obstacle. I know I often need them, but am always willing to try the fun way first.
bronc_17113 01-23-2009, 06:44 PM You bring your Jeep and I'll bring my heep. My brother might show up in his toyota. I haven't been to Chinaman in years so I cant remember a whole lot about it. I know it can get intence at times but I thought there were almost always bypasses.
there are two major obstacles without bypassess one of which almost guarantees a stock fullsize body damage. Yall are welcome to run it just giving my perspective.
Cat118! 01-23-2009, 07:02 PM i can go as a passenger with someone on a sunday
Shadofax 01-23-2009, 07:21 PM Is "Chinaman" different from the trail down west of the springs, "China Wall"?
I guess Chinaman Gulch is different from China wall from Wileec's link.
bronc_17113 01-23-2009, 07:31 PM yes they are two different trails
Cat118! 01-23-2009, 10:49 PM I have done chinamans Gulch 2 times in the Bronco with no problem and many times at Slaughter House.... and if remembering right did China Wall once and was boring
bronc_17113 01-23-2009, 10:59 PM ur bronco was also not stock by any means and its another trail like carnage that seems to get worse every time it is run
Shadofax 01-23-2009, 11:02 PM I have done chinamans Gulch 2 times in the Bronco with no problem and many times at Slaughter House.... and if remembering right did China Wall once and was boring
China is rather "boring" in that there is a lot of 2wd dirt trail (or at least that is the way it was in '99). There is one major obstacle a ways in...the wall. And I don't see anyone making that without at least 1 locker. I had an ARB front/craplock rear and 33's at the time.
Chinaman gulch looks like it might be kinda like Spring Creek that we did this last summer.
bronc_17113 01-23-2009, 11:03 PM china wall is excrutiatingly boring unles it has a LOT of snow
96blkbeauty 01-25-2009, 12:25 AM Can't make this run. Feb is a busy month for work...especially weekends. I need to make as much money as I can, because I am quitting the job and moving to Denver in early March.
Not to mention China and Slaugter don't sound fun with my truck...especially in the winter

You would have fun at slaughter in your rig... China Wall snow or no snow...BAH! Keep it in mind for March:thumbup

James, Slaughter is actually not bad at all. Last weekend we took my buddy's full size Ram through it with no issues whatsoever.

Thats good to hear...but I still can't make this trip. I will be working as much as possible, and the weekends are good money. Especially if I bartend.
Hefty 01-25-2009, 03:57 PM So when are we going. I dont really care where but i wanna go soon.
TdmayfieldIV 01-25-2009, 05:19 PM So when are we going. I dont really care where but i wanna go soon.
I'll be done with my engine rebuild in about a month, knock on wood. I'll go if I do get it done in time:thumbup.
bronc_17113 01-25-2009, 05:59 PM I posted up a date already for my slaughterhouse run that is not going to change. it sounds like tehre is another group that wants to do chinaman which would drfinitely be more challenging for your truck than slaughterhouse. A stocker can reasonablly do slaughterhouse. A stocker iverall is not going to do chinaman some may be able to run it fine with a stock truck but most stockers are not going to want to do it.

my bad, I didn't see the date:doh0715: not paying attention. Anyway that is about a month from now so I might come:thumbup
Edit: Nevermind, I'll be in texas
wileec 01-26-2009, 01:34 PM So when are we going. I dont really care where but i wanna go soon.
I was hoping to join a chinaman trip on Saturday but I have BBall tickets for that day. Also discovered that there is a game on the 28th so I am out then also.
Maybe a Chinaman trip on the 9th Sunday?
MYXD40 01-26-2009, 01:42 PM Hey sorry to hijack the thread..
but anyone know what the trail is called that is located at left hand canyon just north/west of Boulder? Every time I used to go shooting up there last year, I noticed there were tons of Jeeps and Broncos lined up all freaking day hitting that trail. I wanted to go venture that one but everytime I had time, it was packed....

Left Hand off road area. http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=6
Carnage Canyon (now closed) :cry http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=4 It was way beyond a stock truck unless you were willing to do some trail modifications.
Edit: Carnage was the one that the wheelers had to cross the "shooting area and take the lives in there hands to get to. Last I saw that area was still all kinds of fun colors from all the shells left around. ::twak
bronc_17113 01-26-2009, 04:04 PM Well the responsible shooters up there do cleanups multiple times a yr. The only way that things are going to stay open is a unified approach between groups in multiuse areas such as this the wheeling community has done as much or more permanent damage in the area as the "shooters".
wileec 01-26-2009, 04:18 PM I was just making the statement that it was sometimes a bit scarry to drive through. I have no issues with most shooters but there are a few who should not be allowed to go out in public. I am sure you have seen them yourself. Yes everyone contributed to the closure but I have seen the amout of shot up junk that gets halled off that road multiple times every year. Why is an od fridge or TV that much more fun to shoot at than a target?:shrug

because it was broke in the first place and instead of hauling it somewhere for proper disposal and possibly paying a fee, why not haul it up the trail and give it a proper burial:armed:armed:armed:armed:armed:toothless

Sunday is the 8th not the 9th. but that might work. Anybody else interested?
wileec 01-27-2009, 09:00 AM oops the 8th I have Mr. November (shadofax) on the wall have not got an 09 calendar yet. Yea the 8th that the ticket.

Couldnt have said it better! However I've liked it up there durring the week. I used the back area (usually for riffles) for a tactical area setup with the AR15. Often creating points to walk/run to, aim and shoot. And cross shooting between the AR15 and XD40. Can't do that at a "normal" shooting range.
Plus I often would recycle many items up that way, and often found myself taking what I took up there, back down with me if in big enough chunks..
And I've seen my fair share or dumbass's up there. Which forces me to leave. Hell one time I seen a guy drinking up there! Case of beer and busting caps! :twak
96blkbeauty 01-27-2009, 01:32 PM The Left Hand/old Carnage shooting area is probably one of the most popular spots to shoot in that area. Its damn well known, and its horribly abused. Its hard to get up there and find a decent spot to shoot because it is usually so damn busy. Sometimes you can go during the week and shoot alone for a bit...if you're lucky.
As I have stated before, I always try to leave with at least double the amount of trash I create.
MYXD40 01-27-2009, 01:47 PM Yeah when I heard they closed it last year, I had no idea a trail was just on the other side!! I mean I knew about the trail just down the road but didn't think there was a trail just on the other side of the mound. I don't care if they open it up again though for shooting. It was nice when I lived in Thornton, then at Vista Ridge off Highway 7 in Erie. It was close, nice drive, and best of all, FREE!
86bronco64 01-28-2009, 05:06 AM I couldnt care less what u bring myself didnt you have your bronc up until recently?
Well it was a basket case the whole time. I ended up finding a cherokee set up how I wanted it, and the size is better for gas and gettting around in. I've had some issues with it, but I got it to a point where nothing should break cause everything on it is now practically brand new:toothless
bronc_17113 01-28-2009, 05:33 AM lol Long as it works for ya man. hope to see you out there soon.
Shadofax 01-28-2009, 11:11 PM oops the 8th I have Mr. November (shadofax) on the wall have not got an 09 calendar yet. Yea the 8th that the ticket.
Stop looking at me Matt.:twak:smilie_slap
wileec 01-29-2009, 09:05 AM Stop looking at me Matt.:twak:smilie_slap
It that sexy poser flex and straight white body. I do not know why but it just gets me right there.:smokin:
Hefty 01-29-2009, 04:51 PM I can't do the 8th. Just found out my wifes sister and their family are coming in to visit on that day.
BTW. I always thought that Matt had kind of a strange thing for you Mark. Now we see that its true. But I've got to admit that you've got some great flexability Lol
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 04:53 PM Hefty we still have the other trip on the 28th. Whoda thought two trips in one month wow.
wileec 01-29-2009, 05:03 PM I am hearing that the access road to Chinaman is not in the best shape and may be closed if to muddy. I will have to see how the basketball season is going, night prefer the wheeling on the 28th.
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 05:05 PM what if we tried to postpone chinaman till march sometime matt?
wileec 01-29-2009, 05:23 PM That works for me. I may try and get up anyway before than.
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 05:40 PM well u are welcome up at slaughterhouse at the end of february
Hefty 01-29-2009, 05:41 PM Sound good to me. We are definately going to try to make the 28th.
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 05:45 PM would love to see you there
Hefty 01-29-2009, 05:45 PM Sound good to me. We are definately going to try to make the 28th. Feb just got really busy all of the sudden. A march chinaman sounds good. Wheeler lake around June after the snow melt? I know we should just make a 2009 schedule of events.
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 05:47 PM lol 2 yrs ago we couldnt hardly put a run together now we have a pretty good group of guys that love gettin out its great U bringin the wifes rig or the 78 this coming trip?
wileec 01-29-2009, 05:50 PM I like wheeler. That would be a good one to tie in with something else and a couple of days. A plan would make some sense. I also like the spur of the moment trips with only a few folks.
Hefty 01-29-2009, 05:51 PM We will bring the 93. The 78 is out of commission until I have more money. Its still burried in the back yard under 3 ft of snow. Its got a broken front axle too.
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 05:52 PM just a shaft or what?
Hefty 01-29-2009, 05:58 PM Stub shaft and u joint. No big deal but it breaks every time i take it out. Something about running 38's on a stock 44. Lol who woulda thought. Anyway 1 tons are in the works. The swap isnt cheap though. So its gonna take some time
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 06:00 PM yeah that one has not are u running chromolly shafts, ctm or a like joint, etc...? Will not eliminater breakage but might slow it down. And I know what you mean about the hp d60 i been lookin to find a "deal" on one for a while.
Hefty 01-29-2009, 06:07 PM There are no "deals" on king pin 60s. Im thinking about either finding a donor truck for both front and rear of possible rockwells. I think they are overkill but i can pick up a set for about a grand. I would step upto 42s if i go with the rockwells. Thought about upgrading to alloy shafts and ctms but by the time i spend all of that money i could have put it into a d60 and be better off. Im broke right now anyway so it really doesnt matter right now though.
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 06:09 PM i know of a good donor rig (i think it may have a solid 400 as well) for 1600 front and rear d60's as well as 40" super swampers ill link ya if your interested. And i firmly believe that there are always deals you just have to find them lol.
Hefty 01-29-2009, 06:14 PM I would be interested but like i said im broke right now. Send me the link anyway and ill take a look. Maybe it will still be available in a couple of months
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 06:19 PM the link aint purdy lmao its like somethin outta joe dirt
Hefty 01-29-2009, 06:28 PM I can just imagine what my wife would say if i brought that home. Kinda scarry. I think i would save myself the embarasment of having that in my yard for even a day and just buy some junkyard axles. Lol. Not a bad find though dual 60s with disc brakes. It doesnt look like it is local though
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 06:30 PM boulder I've seen it down there a few times but yeah when i looked at it as a donor my wife told me id be partin it out somewhere else
Hefty 01-29-2009, 06:30 PM Need to grow out my mullet first. That could take some time.
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 06:32 PM :thumbup 9620
Hefty 01-29-2009, 06:36 PM I've got far too much pride to do that to my head.
bronc_17113 01-29-2009, 06:37 PM way too much for that for sure lol
Hefty 01-29-2009, 06:40 PM where is the slaughter house trail located
Hefty 01-29-2009, 07:19 PM never mind. Its closer to me than i thought.
Hey don send me the link. if the price is right Im all over it.
Cat118! 01-30-2009, 10:44 PM I will volunteer to be "photographer" for exchange of passenger seat ride :toothless
wileec 01-31-2009, 03:22 AM Cat you have got it as soon as we get up somewhere. I wanted to run Chinaman tomorrow with CO group but other things came up:cry
I will let you know when I am going.:thumbup
86bronco64 02-07-2009, 03:32 AM How did the Chinaman run go?
Me and a few buddies are planning on camping at Deer Creek Campground the night before the Slaughterhouse run if anyone is interested, you are welcome to join.
Hefty 02-08-2009, 10:48 PM Didn't Happen. Too much stuff going on. Still planning for a March or April trip though
wileec 02-09-2009, 11:21 AM What he said. I still hope to find a trip that way.
Hefty 02-12-2009, 04:51 PM Anymore info on the Slaughterhouse run. Maybe we need to start a new thread on it. Meeting place time etc.
bronc_17113 02-12-2009, 05:22 PM ill post it up in the next week I know we will be meeting around 10 I dont see a need for a new thread
86bronco64 02-13-2009, 10:36 PM im definatly in. i got time off and everything

Shadofax 02-15-2009, 01:09 AM cool we will have a diverse group on this one for sure
Very cool.
I hope you guys have a great time. I've obviously not posted since I can't go anytime soon, so take lots of pics and just remember, in an emergency I will do whatever I can to help.
I think someone mentioned this...I do like the idea of talking about and perhaps setting some weekend dates for this coming summer's wheeling events. :haha
bronc_17113 02-15-2009, 07:29 AM DUDE!!!! you want us to plan ahead (skepiticism)

Hefty 02-15-2009, 10:58 PM Ok a really nice parts truck! Nice addition. I'll trade you for my 04 superduty. I'll take yours, You take mine with the payments. Deal?
bronc_17113 02-15-2009, 11:14 PM no ty I like my bodystyle better lol
Hefty 02-15-2009, 11:19 PM I don't blame you!
Shadofax 02-15-2009, 11:59 PM 97 f250 460 zf5 spd
I'd like to see what's out there equipped as follows: '93-95 F350, E4OD, 5.8/4x4/1356, regular cab short box. maybe 130k or so, what around $2.5-3k?
bronc_17113 02-16-2009, 12:10 AM u would be lucky to find that price with those miles imo at least for a nice truck as I would assume you would want
Hefty 02-16-2009, 12:52 AM I'd like to find one thats been totaled for parts for say FREE
bronc_17113 02-16-2009, 01:00 AM what parts would u want off that? and no im not offering lol
Shadofax 02-16-2009, 01:04 AM If I bought what I'd mentioned, It would be running and I'd just do lot's of maint. to make sure everything is cool, and then eventually slap on 40's with 17's and lockers/gears and call it a day. Oh put a little suspension lift on or 2" body lift, so the tires fit.
I'm dreaming though. I don't have the time or need for another truck to wrench on. this one is it. And it needs a few things and I still love this truck, but right now I just don't have the gitt e up to do much. I'm dreading a change of 4* bushings to 2* before I buy new front tires, but it has to be done.
Hefty 02-16-2009, 01:29 AM So whats the truck count so far for slaughterhouse?
wileec 02-16-2009, 10:39 AM I think I've been talking about putting together a calendar or trail runs....
.... Yeah I did. I agree if we don't plan it out we all just sit around until the last minute to get things going and its just a hassle... Damn. I'm beginning to sound like my wife. " pack a week early for vacation so we have time and dont forget anything. Bla bla bla.

hahahaha leaving it in the truck with the rest of its driver parts lol. Im hoping for a bronco air bumper and winch for the front and a bed mounted winch for game hauling other than that this is a driver/hauler/hunting rig only. Hefty I dont have a clear cut truck count at this point I know a fe from this site and a few from rmftc and a few of those guys budies in jeeps and your brother in law or somethin like that in somethin else.
Hefty 02-16-2009, 01:03 PM Cool well sounds like a decent crowd. I guess we'll see who shows up. Matt I think you should come I know that OUR WIFE wants to go... People are going to get the wrong idea here:doh0715:

bronc_17113 02-17-2009, 02:52 PM Hey, guys,
Where is Slaughterhouse and can it be done in a stock Cherokee? (Bronco still in too many pieces) Thanks, Charles.
you wil be fine i will be doing it on 31's as I still havent replaced a gashed 33 from my last trip out
I'd like to go but Im out of wheeling for a while. Cant figure out why I have no power steering. New box, pump, lines all the good stuff. Just doesn't work. Also been spending all my money on guns and reloading stuff. Plus im gettin ready to tear into the front suspension again. I dont like the way it drives. oh and maybe one day start the 4speed swap.
Hefty 02-17-2009, 05:53 PM Don't forget the power steering fluid, and while your at it check the blinker fluid too.:smilie_slap:histerica
:duh I knew i forgot something......
CS79bronco 02-18-2009, 01:01 AM If you get stuck I'll pull you out Charles:thumbup I'll hold you to that Chris, seeing as you'll have 2 Broncos out there!
OK, I'll talk to my daughter & see if she's willing to let me drive her Cherokee, course she & the wife will want to come too. The Cherokee only has a hitch on the rear to pull on, but should be enough if necessary. I won't go for the big mud hole or get into deep snow if I can help it. Thanks, guys.
Cat118! 02-18-2009, 01:19 AM sounds like I good time!! you guys have fun!
Hefty 02-18-2009, 12:24 PM I'll hold you to that Chris, seeing as you'll have 2 Broncos out there!
My 78 is out for the season (until I rent out that house and have some spare cash). Only bringing the 93.
wileec 02-18-2009, 02:01 PM I mentioned a bronco trip to my son and he is WAY up for a run. Hope I can make it.
bronc_17113 02-18-2009, 02:06 PM Hope you guys can make it as well matt
Hefty 02-18-2009, 09:25 PM I talked to the guys at the local 4wd shop up here and one of them might tag along as well.
86bronco64 02-19-2009, 01:33 AM My buddy has a pretty truck, and wants to keep it that way, how is it as far as that is concerned. 02 s10 zr2 stock btw...
Hefty 02-19-2009, 02:20 AM Should be fine, probably more likely to be damaged in the wal-mart parking lot. Keep in mind it is a snow run and anything can happen.
bronc_17113 02-19-2009, 06:05 AM I don't expect to see a lot of snow. I don't know where an s10 sits stock but if he is THAT concerned with body damage however minor it may be the trail is probablly not the place for him and consideration should be placed on staying to the pavement. Imo

I don't know how its been up there but we have been in the 50's for a while. All the snow is gone from rampart range road and gold camp except in really shaded places.
I am bummed I can't go, you guys have fun.
Hefty 02-19-2009, 12:40 PM I'm on the other side of the mountain (literally). Not sure how it will be there but we got 6in yesterday making it about 24" to 30" on the ground. The past few weeks have been warm and we've lost a lot of snow but there is still plenty on the ground. I haven't been over that way though so I don't know what the conditions are like but I would still expect to see snow. Maybe not as bad as here but still some snow.
TdmayfieldIV 02-20-2009, 12:40 AM make sure to take some good pics.
bronc_17113 02-23-2009, 12:39 PM Ok.... well guys i had something come up and a buddy needs a hand that wekend so i'm not going to make it. Ya'll have fun and ill try to figure somethin out for next month. Maybe china wall.
wileec 02-23-2009, 12:55 PM Sorry to here that Don we will miss you. Who is still planning on being there?
BTW had a chance to run Chinaman Gulch Yesterday. Great trail but not for the faint of heart. lots of trail damage possible. Here is the link to the trip reports section http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1958111#post1958111
Hefty 02-23-2009, 04:36 PM We can't make it either. It's like every time that we plan to go, family comes into town. I have to be in CS by 5 on sat so I don't think its gonna work. Makes for a really long day with the kids in the truck too because we have to come back up to Frisco that night. Won't get home till after midnight. Have fun.

I'm plannin on doin a trip in april as well so maybe u can make that one
Hefty 02-23-2009, 07:31 PM I hope so, I think my brother and I are going to run China Wall on Sat mid morning. It only takes about 3 hrs. to get through and it's on the way to CS. If anybody else wants to get in send me a PM. I don't want to take away from the Slaughterhouse run but still want to get out and wheel a little just need to get to CS by 5.:shrug
Hefty 02-23-2009, 07:36 PM I will update the Trip Calendar as soon as I can.

When- Saturday the 28th
Where- Meeting at the Loaf and Jug off County Road 43A and U.S. 285. Just past Pine Junction before you get to Bailey. Can't miss it.
When, I think Don planned on 10:00am, so we'll stick with that... say between 10:00am and 10:15am, we'll roll out to the trail at 10:30am or so. That will give folks time to fill up, grab munchies, and so forth.
I will be running on CB Channel 30 up to the meeting point, after that we'll pick a channel for us to run.
If you all could do me a favor, I'll be going through this thread and the one on RMFTC to tally up who will be going, but if I could ask for your help, just post up or PM me that you're going, I'll throw together the list for myself.

It's really up to you. I ran it back in January and ran probably 70% of the trail in 2wd, and I'm L/S with 33" MTR's. Shoot man, Thursday and Friday if ya need a hand with anything, let me know... I'd be willing to help ya.
86bronco64 02-25-2009, 01:56 AM I think If I do not get it done, I can manage 2wd... And I appreciate the offer, but all I gotta do is get the u joints in the axle shafts and get them in. My problem is time. I will attempt to finish on Friday evening, as long as Napa has the right u joint this time...
CS79bronco 02-25-2009, 02:34 AM OK guys, where is China Wall? Closer to the Springs than Slaughterhouse? Looks like lots of snow coming on the west side of the divide, so not going to try Slaughterhouse with the stock XJ. I gotta get a trail map somewhere?
Hefty 02-25-2009, 03:09 AM http://www.traildamage.com
This is a good place to start for looking up trails. They're not all here but 90% are.
Slaughterhouse will be much easier on the xj than China Wall
foxfire 02-25-2009, 05:30 AM come to slauterhouse the xj will do fine. I have a winch and from what I understand alot of the bad stuff can be bypassed. but it is up to you.
Hefty wish you could be with us at slauterhouse I'm still want the pics. of that soft top.
Hefty 02-25-2009, 06:29 AM It won't go on till it's a little warmer. Although its been really warm this month and it's tempting me alot. I know as soon as I would put it on that it'll dump 3 ft on me. Gotta put the cage in to so the kids are safe and I have something to mount the seat belts to. One thing always leads to another. Just bought a winch. gotta build a mount or bumper. I have rear gears and axles now I need you to lay off on that detroit:smilie_slap and let me get it Russ. Need front gears and locker and then the install. And more than anything. I need to get my damn house rented in CS and start selling more windows so that I have money to do all of this. See what I mean, One thing leads to another.. Oh yeah, rims and tires come summer too:doh0715:
And all of this is just on the 93.
Don't even get me started on my 78. I'm debating on selling it to fund the 93 but I've had it for 10yrs and it's my baby.
bronc_17113 02-25-2009, 08:58 AM If you sell the 78 you will regret it. As far as slaughterhouse goes there is only one rough section and it aint bad you will be fine in a stock xj but at the end of the day it is your truck and you have to decide what you want to do. Oh just read the 2wd part as far as im concerned if you don't have the option of using 4wd then you probablly should not be on the trail at all.Just my opinion take it for what its worth.
Hefty 02-25-2009, 01:05 PM Yeah, I know that I would regret it. I would have to get 8-10 k and I don't think that will happen especially in this economy. Of course I do live in rich kid land. You never know what people will spend up here.
It's not Chucks Jeep. It belongs to his daughter. That is why he is so worried about damage.

I hear ya on all this.
It's not like I don't have the time to go on trips right now (aside from generally liking wheeling WAY better in summer), we had the wedding and Italy honeymoon last year, and this year I've been saving for:
further house landscaping including stamped concrete rear patio addition and low stone wall
1 yr. anniversary
Wife has special B-day this year
Thanksgiving trip to Carmel
So, I am very fortunate to have a good job, and I just got the news on my bonus coming in march, so I am very grateful. This will allow me to at least buy new C bushings up front, eventually 2 new Iroks for the front a little later, and new Deaver leaf springs for the rear, to finally get rid of the Rancho AAL and blocks I have ran for like 10yrs and that are more than worn and rough.
It also means that the rollbar will have to wait until early next year most likely. Sheesh, I've put that off for about 5 yrs now.
Hefty 02-25-2009, 10:17 PM Wife has special B-day this year
Ah so she's old this yeah hugh?:smilie_slap
Shadofax 02-25-2009, 10:51 PM Well, we aren't kids, and she has a few years on me, and I'll only say I am past 40.
She looks no where near her age. I actually thought she was younger than me when we met.
Hefty 02-25-2009, 11:00 PM Jen is 2 yrs older than I am. I give her a hard time every time its her birthday. She reminds me every time that I will still die first. She is 31 and people still think she's 18-20
Shadofax 02-25-2009, 11:36 PM Jen is 2 yrs older than I am. I give her a hard time every time its her birthday. She reminds me every time that I will still die first. She is 31 and people still think she's 18-20
As I recall, I had the same thinking from seeing her once....i.e. early 20's. Course I didn't chat with her much at all, and that can say a lot.
Hefty 02-25-2009, 11:43 PM Yesterday was our 8th anniversary. We had Ryan 4 years ago but when she would go out and have a baby on her hip she would get the dirtiest looks from all the older ladies. Like damn that little girl has a kid. When I was with her they would give her the same look and then stare me down like I was a child molester. When we were getting married and looking for a place to have the reception, a lady at one of the hotels thought it was a joke and told us that CO has laws about how old you have to be to get married. Jen politely told her to GET BENT! She a pastors kid too. She may be small but she's fiesty.
Shadofax 02-26-2009, 12:04 AM Congrats to you both!!!!
You should always smile and be happy if people look at you like you're very young. I was still getting carded around 40, I liked that.
Hefty 02-26-2009, 12:12 AM Yeah we get carded everywhere unless we have the kids with us.
Shadofax 02-26-2009, 12:49 AM Yeah we get carded everywhere unless we have the kids with us.
I just can't wait for her to get out Brownie on the trails. You did say it was her's correct?
I won't be seeing any action until it gets warmer.
Hefty 02-26-2009, 01:10 AM Yeah it's hers.
Hefty 02-26-2009, 01:10 AM Although she's been working more lately and I have been Mr. Mom so she's been driving the SD to work and has kind of claimed it as hers. Its nicer and drives better especially in the snow. That is fine with me if she would rather drive it but now I'm driving The Turd all of the time, thus the reason I was thinking of selling the 78.
It is fun to watch her get in and out of the trucks though. I built sliders with removable steps for The Turd because its hard to get the kids in their car seats without them.

It was like mid 60s on Chinaman an Sunday beats the crap out of sweating your ass off doing recovery:doh0715: It was a wonderfull day.
I also have to set up one of THOSE birthdays for the end of April.
Hefty 02-26-2009, 01:52 PM So why didn't you tell us you were going out. Coulda helped support the bronco cause!!
wileec 02-26-2009, 02:06 PM There were like 18 rigs on the trail. (guess 1 more would not have mattered), But is was not my run to invite. I was kind of a tag along as it was. Had never met any of the folks on the run. I think you might be the only one around for winter who would be up for this trail anyway. I know Mark and Chris (Swat) could do it and Don would be willing but it is a LOOONG way from Ft. Collins
Hefty 02-26-2009, 02:26 PM Just had to give you a hard time! Couldn't have gone anyway. It is a long way from Ft. Collins. I really live in a great location for wheeling. Only problem now is that I have to drive a ways to get away from the snow. Wheeler Lake, Red Cone and several others are 25min away from me!!! Holy Cross, Chinaman and a bunch more only 1hr. Just thought I'd brag a little. Oddly enough Slaughterhouse is on the other side of the mountain from me but the fastest way to get there is for me to drive back to Denver and down 285. 2.5hr trip in the winter. Summer I would just go over Red Cone and wheel my way there.
wileec 02-26-2009, 02:33 PM I do not think you can not drive over Red Cone that way Webster yes. I loved Chinaman will get back for sure before the end of winter. Got to think skinny I got matching dents from the rock next to the passenger mirror. 1 on the way up 1 on the way down. :cry

Was it unavoidable, or were you just not doing a good enough job at being skinny?
Hefty 02-26-2009, 03:00 PM Makes a difference when you want to keep your truck somewhat dent free. I'm not one for putting intentional blemishes in my trucks but I leave one in it so it won't make me as mad. Mark your truck is nicer than mine so if you want I will take the initial step for you. I can get my ballping hammer out next time I see you. I'll go ahead and put that first dent in it for you so the next one won't be so hard to cope with.:histerica:twak
Hefty 02-26-2009, 03:07 PM http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/711487/fullsize/marks-dent.jpg
Shadofax 02-26-2009, 03:21 PM You circled all the existing nice clean spots.
I do have a lower passenger wrinkled panel behind the door. And the driver door just below the mirror got pushed in, but I popped him back out. Gotta love white.
wileec 02-26-2009, 03:30 PM I am pretty sure it is make able with out the rash I was just not careful enough. Having a few dents already there makes one careless. :shrug

Might be much more avoidable on 37s than on 32s
Hefty 02-26-2009, 03:30 PM Jen wants to paint the Turd white but then I couldn't call it The Turd
7LBRONCO 02-27-2009, 10:43 AM I did Chinaman's in my stock 70 K5. No issues at the entrance, just nice and slow, with a GOOD spotter. I climbed way up on the left hand rock, and let er slide off, nice and slow.
Going back in June with my 78 Bronco. We'll see how I fare with it.

may be more of the super soft front springs that would help me get higher up on that drivers rock.

Wait what I'm not goin so there shouldnt be any body damage. Nice thing about my truck though u never can tell whats new damage and whats old damage.
Hefty 02-27-2009, 10:22 PM There should be some fresh snow on both trails tomorrow. It was nasty up here today. We got probably 4in or so but it was blowing around all day and the roads were slicker than snot.
Matt has enough damage that he probably won't notice any new damage either!!;)
Shadofax 02-27-2009, 11:14 PM What's snow? what's rain?

Hey now I can still find the new body work. It is not quite 1 big dent yet. It is to bad I did not find out about real body armer until way too late. I always thought that body damage was part of the game, at least until I some real pretty rigs on the harder trails.
I also saw that post about the list for the run but it has not been updated since. We will see. I am sure we will have fun no matter what.
If Mark were not afeared of the cold maybe we could get him out:thumbup
thesoundmaster 02-28-2009, 03:30 AM Alright, so, Slaughterhouse folks...
Meeting at the Loaf and Jug off 285 and CR43a
For reference on our group, look for me in my Ranger (dark blue, front valence missing black toolbox and dual whips) my buddy's XJ (black with a safari rack and ARB bumper) and Russ's (foxfire) Bronco... there will be a few others but look for one of those and thats our group. Meeting at 10, we'll depart for the trailhead at 10:30
Plan lunch once we get past the cattle guard at the top
See ya there!

I know, I'd like to get out, what's the actual status on the runs again? Go look at the calender Hefty was kind enough to provide?

thesoundmaster 03-01-2009, 02:08 AM Great run today. Glad to meet some new faces, and wheel with those I already knew.
Had a little carnage on my part (yeah yeah if I had a real truck and not a cute little toy Ranger I wouldn't have this issue). Ended up breaking my passenger side shock, which promptly jumped and cut my CV boot... as well as my ball joint issues... end result, finally replace the exsisting broken shock and the new broken shock, new CV's as I think it's time to replace em after oh... 173K, ball joints, and replace my passenger tire as it's better served as a tire swing at the park, or a door mat, or a roadbed.
Anyhow, heres some of my pics...

What happened to Hefty?
86bronco64 03-01-2009, 02:58 AM Only two stucks... both me :brownbag
Hefty 03-01-2009, 03:04 AM Oh I didn't post that here. Long story short. Sheared the pins off of the factory shim blocks and they slid out causing the rear axle to move forward on the leafs and point the pinion to the sky. Bent the grade 8 u-bolts and best of all it happened right here:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/711851/fullsize/100_1057.jpg
Doug(Coloranger) Winched me up and became an anchor point so the Turd wouldn't roll back on top of us. 2 1/2hrs later it kept going under its own power and we continued playing.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/711882/fullsize/100_1059.jpg
Doug and Charles(CS79Bronco) both have pictures on my in precarious positions with the tire and I know they are going to post them. Lets just say Doggy Style. Thanks Doug and Charles. I don't have pics of the carnage because I was to busy fixing it.
Hefty 03-01-2009, 03:10 AM By the way, Charles drove a stock cherokee up this same hill with only mild body damage. He gets the "MAN AWARD" for the day.
Here ya go Charles, http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/711906/fullsize/img16.jpg for the body damage!:thumbup:histerica
The rest of us are a lot stronger from stacking rocks for him.
Did I give you that extra factory shim with the truck? I had one laying around.

Hefty 03-01-2009, 04:00 PM Did I give you that extra factory shim with the truck? I had one laying around.
Yup but I sheared both of them. The drivers side was the cause. The pin had already started to shear and had rusted. When we pulled the little pin out of the spring plate there was literally about a 1/8" area in the center that wasn't already sheared. I got excited when I found the spare and then realized that both had broken so I ditched them both.
coloranger 03-01-2009, 06:53 PM The trail was great... i made it all the way to woodland park on the way home before something broke... i think it is the rear end... had to get a ride home to get the trailer so i could get the bronco home.
Hefty 03-01-2009, 07:05 PM Dude that sucks! At least I made it home
Hefty 03-01-2009, 07:37 PM I'm gonna tear everything apart tomorrow (if it's not snowing), replace the bent u bolts, check the drive shaft and joints, and tear the front hub apart again to try to find the clunking. I think there is a loose wheel bearing or something. Bearings were just repacked less than a month ago and the warn hubs are brand-new so??? We've been getting a lot of rear vibration since I bought it so I'm gonna reset the pinion angle and maybe have the drive shaft balanced too.
Oh yeah I just got my detroit for the 8.8 so I've got everything for it, now to acquire the gears, locker, and shafts for the front then it's axle build time.
Starkman 03-01-2009, 09:41 PM great run today. I forgot my camera but lots of other people did take pics. should be posted soon. Hefty sorry about your messed up day.
Hade a great time, nice seeing the stock FSBs going up everything!
I will have to admit that the Cherokee in 2wd high doing most of the trail without problem was impressive...
Hope to get out with you guys soon again.

How do you know it wasn't the wedges about ready to let go? Or it could be unbalanced tires.
Hefty 03-01-2009, 11:46 PM Pinion angle was too far on the positive side already. About 8-10deg up. I don't know if that was the issue or if the wedges were already causing issues. Tires were just rotated and re-balanced less than a month ago. I figure while I'm under there replacing the u-bolts that I bent to hell I would just double check everything and make sure everything is aligned properly.
Shadofax 03-02-2009, 12:21 AM Pinion angle was too far on the positive side already. About 8-10deg up. I don't know if that was the issue or if the wedges were already causing issues. What does this mean? is this Browny (I don't like the name "turd" for such a nice truck)? that truck has the DC rear driveshaft correct? if so, what are you saying with this too far positive, 8-10* up? The driveshaft if equipped with DC up top must point toward the Tcase, so it will have positive angle.
Hefty 03-02-2009, 12:36 AM Yes it has the DC shaft. I'm very aware of the fact that it needs a positive angle. It just seemed to be a little too high of a pinion angle where I was getting a little binding. I'm only stating what I visually was seeing and I was guessing on the difference 8-10deg. I haven't gotten under to fully check everything out but that is what I was planning to do. I don't question Brandon's (Doba) ability to build a suspension and I know for a fact that he did a hell of a job. I'm just going to check everything out while I've got it jacked up. It may not be off at all, I just want to double check. There are several things that could attribute to the drive line vibration so I will rule them out one at a time. I only get the vibration during acceleration. I call it the turd to piss off Jen. She told me yesterday that if I didn't stop, when I came home my 78 might not be in the backyard anymore. Around here it is "Mommy's Brown Bronco" but like I said she has kind of taken ownership of my Superduty (Daddy's Blue Truck).
Shadofax 03-02-2009, 12:41 AM It should look pretty much like this:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/195705/fullsize/106_0668.jpg
this is about 2-3* below pinion pointing exactly at driveshaft (so 2-3* lower ujoint angle). If I put an angle finder on the drivershaft, as I recall it's about 16* with pinion being about 13-14*
Hefty 03-02-2009, 01:08 AM more like this. Sorry I can't get a pic right now it dark and cold out side.
CS79bronco 03-02-2009, 01:36 AM Soon as I figure out how to post pic's you can see the bent u-bolts & wedges coming out of Hefty's truck! Don't know if pinion angle will show or not. Also got 1 pic to make Jopes want to come to Colorado!:cry And 1 of how NOT to pump up a tire!!!:haha

Shadofax 03-02-2009, 01:52 AM more like this. Sorry I can't get a pic right now it dark and cold out side.
If that's the way it was before your shims broke, it was way off to begin with. Once you have the breakage, certainly the gear will try to turn it straight up. that could have been your vibration though.
Hefty 03-02-2009, 01:57 AM Yup that's what I was thinking. I'm Gonna leave out the shims and see how it works. I had planned on doing this before the incident. I'll loose an inch of height but that's ok. New 2-3in springs are on my list too so I can ditch the blocks completely. The front sits a little high to but I will take care of that because I will be fabing up extended arms as soon as I get the correct heims. Ruffstuff sent me someone else's order. I think according to my calculations that I can change the pinion by extending the arms and mounting inside of the frame rails. New t-case skid and mount etc. You know the drill Mark.

Two Bighorns? (females?) About 3-4 miles from Lake George. Gonna work on the pics, been looking at pics you posted.
Thanks for the directions Chris!
Hefty 03-02-2009, 02:14 AM Mark, are you going to accept the FOTM nomination? Just wanted to know if you need help pushing the bronco out of the garage:haha You gotta get out soon!
Also in the pinion pic I noticed you were running MTR's. How did you like them?
Double check all the u-joints and the way they are held in Chris. I replaced one of the u-joints in the rear drive line and it was a pain to get back in. I was getting a vibration as well for a while before I changed it. Besides the shackle flip I never messed with the rear suspension. Here's how the angle looked before the SAS. Would the front suspension have a big effect on the drive angle?
http://images28.fotki.com/v1001/photos/1/109911/5384238/CIMG0414-vi.jpg
Hefty 03-02-2009, 01:50 PM There you go posting pics of my bronco again. The front could possibly? When I was under there it seemed really like it had a high pinion angle but we'll see. I haven't started tearing it apart yet. Like I said I never questioned your work at all. I've built enough trucks and jeeps to have some clue most of the time. I noticed the driveline angle in the starbucks parking lot about a week ago and just never got to it. If the pins had already sheared they could have moved and caused issues too. IDK. Not a big deal either way. It's all part of the fun of owning a bronco. If you can't fix it then buy a jeep. Thats why I like them and this site because everyone is willing to learn and share their knowledge and work on their own trucks. Most of the jeep guys I knew didn't know what a spark plug was. Don't get me wrong I've owned 4 jeeps but their drivers are more likely to take their trucks into a shop rather than pick up a wrench.
Hefty 03-02-2009, 01:53 PM The u-joint are the funky off sized caps in the rear. You did put them in the right way?:histerica
There I go questioning your ability again Brandon:haha
Shadofax 03-02-2009, 01:53 PM Mark, are you going to accept the FOTM nomination? Just wanted to know if you need help pushing the bronco out of the garage:haha You gotta get out soon!
Also in the pinion pic I noticed you were running MTR's. How did you like them?
I didn't know I was nominated.:banghead
But I don't think I should accept as I just can't do it justice right now. Just too many house projects coming that we are busy planning for. I'm trying to "protect" a little of my bonus money from them (the house projects), so I can put a little into the truck. I really want to get a thing or two right before I venture out again, so I don't see me going anywhere for a little while yet.
The MTR's were ok. No siping, so I didn't think they did all that great in rain and snow, but you should be able to get more mileage out of them vs. the swampers. In any mud I love the Iroks way better. MTR's probably would balance out better, so I was considering going to a 37" MTR, but I really like the Iroks.
Hefty 03-02-2009, 02:02 PM That is why I am looking at the MTR's. I want to run 37's but on a 15in rim. I have been going back and forth between the Truxs MT's and the MTR's. Gotta get more money first. Tires are about last on my list unless I wear the ones that are on here out before the rest on the list is done.
I totally understand the backing out of the nomination. It seems like you've gotta spend a lot and pic whore to win lately. This is a tough time anyway. I'm doing all my upgrades with slightly used parts to save money. Only issue is it takes a lot longer to find the parts. We all know Shadofax is the shiznit anyway.

Shadofax 03-02-2009, 04:57 PM What ended up being your rear end issue Doug?
Hmm, speaking of rear ends, the last 2 pics we have a near butt-crack shot, and big horn sheep running at the party, presumably to mount the said butt-crack while owner is stuck in wheelwell.

Hefty 03-02-2009, 08:46 PM I was simply demonstrating the proper technique of Pumping a tire. I offered to drop my pants for the shot but nobody wanted that.
Took out the shim and the pinion is correct now. Damaged the rear ujoint enough to make me want to replace it.

Hefty 03-02-2009, 10:33 PM Another shameless flex shot.
I think I really need to do my extended radius arms. The stock arms just don't do it justice.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/712406/fullsize/flex-before-radius-arms.jpg
Shadofax 03-02-2009, 11:53 PM yea, if you don't have extended arms but do have the cage progressive coils, it's kinda defeating the purpose. Doba may not have done the arms since these days they have gotten darn expensive. I'd have issues coughing up the, what $825 wanted now? That's $200 more than what I paid for mine brand new. AND I was very fortunate to be close enough to go pick them up at the shop (no shipping) and dick around with Jim Cole. I can't imagine extensions vs. the Cage RA product though. As hard as the money is to part with, the moment you get this box and it's friggin heavy and each RA basically weighs 2x a stock RA, you know you'll be hard pressed to ever damage these. Something else might break, but not your RA's.

Yeah the cage coils are just sitting there looking pretty right now. I know that the cage arms are the S**T but $900 after shipping is way out of the budget. I'm gonna pick up some 2" x .375wall DOM and do the ghetto fab thing for now. I'm planning on extending them about 12-18" over stock and using the new rod ends I just got in the mail yesterday. I'm gonna try to put the bend in them like the Cage arms but we'll see. Heavy plating at the C's. Right now anything is better than that. (except being stock or running TTB)
Extended arms were in the plan as well, but I went with stock arms just to get it back on the road. Cage arms are too damned expensive. DOM and johnny joints was the way I had planned on going.
foxfire 03-03-2009, 06:54 PM Finally got Slaughterhouse pictures together, had jury duty yesterday so there was not time. Did get lucky in a Greely Salvage yard however; check in general Bronco S for that story. Do we have a link for pictures from the RMFTC site? Don and Chris and the rest on China wall we missed you but it looks like you had fun after fixin everything. Oh no carnage for Wileec today:thumbup. On to the pictures. these are great. thank you.:twotu::upup::D
Shadofax 03-03-2009, 09:45 PM Does look like it was a nice day. Is the trail rated pretty low then? Looks like there are some fun play areas, not much that is challenging? I guess so if the cherokee went mostly in 2wd.
Foxfire, you must have your swaybars on still? That is some serious lack of suspension movement. Compare it against Matt's, pretty sure his swaybars are removed.

yes they are still on. I tow a big tent trailer in the summer and a little worried about that without it. What do ou think.:popc1:
bronc_17113 03-03-2009, 10:47 PM mark it is a pretty low rated trail but there are one or two places to stretch your tires at the time I put this together I was thinking snow and i dont like anything hard for snow runs I may have a lot fo body damage but I aint lookin to ruin my shit

Ditch them. At least the front one. You shouldn't notice much difference

What is the trailer weight, likely pretty low? My truck with the lift, super soft coils, no sway bars, had absolutely no issue towing a totally filled 8x5 trailer from Oregon to here. some times I was actually going over 75mph. The trailer was totally packed, and weighed roughly 3200 lbs.

I totally agree.
even in summer I think I found about my max, spring creek (6-8 rated). Nice fairly tough trail that won't ruin my stuff. In rain it could be very interesting. and I'd be up for anything less than this. It's not that my truck couldn't do something more, 7-10 rated, it's just that the rating most likely means I will be beating the rig hard, and serious body damage is likely. I want my doors to open, I don't want my glass shattered, soft top ripped, etc. So spring creek is a hard days fun for me.
and as you say, snow, ice, very wet conditions make a 3 trail a 6 or so, with body damage possible due to slipping/sliding. Plus recovery/breakage sucks when it's cold. I'd much rather deal with hot.

The trailer is 4700 when fully loaded. it's the biggest trailer coalman made. It is 17 feet long folded up and around 5 feet tall. It does pull real well. I think i'll remove the front one and see how it goes. Then the rear if it's still pulling ok.:whiteflag

I think once you take off the front and realize that you can't tell the difference that you will want to take of the rear. Even with close to 7in of lift and soft springs I only notice the difference if I'm flying around corners. I get a little body roll but not much. I leave the rear on but disconnect it when I'm planing to go off road. Just zip tie up the drops and push the bar back on the axle. Just remember to check it to make sure it doesn't fall during the trail run. It's only 2 nuts to disconnect it.

jopes 03-23-2009, 03:11 AM I was simply demonstrating the proper technique of Pumping a tire. I offered to drop my pants for the shot but nobody wanted that.
Took out the shim and the pinion is correct now. Damaged the rear ujoint enough to make me want to replace it.
I took the liberty of interpreting for the sheep

Hefty 03-23-2009, 12:29 PM Wow took you long enough to find that one:histerica
coloranger 03-23-2009, 11:57 PM What ended up being your rear end issue Doug?
Hmm, speaking of rear ends, the last 2 pics we have a near butt-crack shot, and big horn sheep running at the party, presumably to mount the said butt-crack while owner is stuck in wheelwell.
Finally had time to dig into the truck... was super simple issue. A bolt backed out of the rear drive shaft flange at the xfer case.... (the bolts on the right dont look happy)

Hit the pinion brake mount, and beat the heads off the bolts (and bent them just a little

Nothing else broke...
Just some shots of the size of the rear shaft and joints....

New bolts purchased at ford and new rear yoke seal and should be all good.
Hefty 03-24-2009, 12:46 PM Well I'm glad it wasn't too serious. Now you can still get out on the trail with us.
