Trying to find a good all around cam for a 79 Bronco 400. I know there are many options out there but..........is there a cam out there that will give me low-end torque and the noticiable (lopey) idle? I am trying to find a happy medium I don't want to sacrifice power or sound. Which ever cam I choose or is recommended I will buy the corresponding timing set(three key-way perferred), lifters, and valve springs. This Bronco is mainly used for joy riding and occasionally used to pull things if its something to big for my F150 and the 302 to handle. The only mods the 400 has is a fourbarrel Edelbrock intake with a 600cfm Holley.

I had comp cams 268h in my 30 over 400 years ago and it had a nice lopey idle and ran very well. Also had same carb and intake you have with headers. Hope that helps.

The BEST bang for the buck cam for a low compression "stock" 400 is the Edelbrock performer.

I guess I should have mentioned I plan on a full rebuild over the summer and I am probably going with a set of pistons from Tmyer to raise compression a little. Thanks for the replies.

What model of the 268H did you have? high energy, dual energy, extreme energy? I am trying to find it on comp cam's website. Thanks.

I have a 255DEH in my mild 400 build (TMeyers high compression pistons also). Love it...probably not as "lopey" as the 268DEH, but makes LOTS of low end power.

Regardles of what you pick anything in the 255DEH to 268DEH range is going to make you happy.

Agreed. I ran a 268H in a new rebuilt '72 429 with the D2VE open chambered heads (low compression). Ran good, but had little more power than the M motor I took out. I had a guy suggest a 255DEH to help overcome the compression deficiency. It was like someone flipped a switch. Made tons more low end power.

265 Deh, go with the k-kit to get the whole she'bang. The stock valve springs won't put up with the 265 for long.

This is a really helpfull thread. Ive been looking at cams also. How much does the lobe seperation affect a cam? Ive been looking at cams with 110 and 112 degrees seperation. Which is a better choice for these motors?

Basically the lobe separation determines how your torque is spread out and where it peaks, in a sence. If you go with 110* separation you're torque will be built up slightly more in the lower rpm range. The 112* separation will be slightly more spread out in the rpm range of the cam. I went with a Crane H-266-2 on a couple builds including the one in my bronco, and Im very happy with that cam. Never know, you might be able to pick one up cheap now.:toothless
