: Bearing replacement, secret seal?

Hi guys,

I had a wheel bearing fail on my "new" '96 bronco a few weeks ago (while cruising down I-35 at about 85MPH, fun ride that was). Anyway I finally have time to fix it and have I decided to replace everything from the spindles outward, and was able to find everything except for one seal (the one the arrow is pointing to):

Can anyone help? I was unable to find it at pep boys, autozone, NAPA, etc, and the Ford parts clerk was not able to find a cross reference for it in his computer. There doesn't seem to be a callout for it on the autozone online exploded drawing either.

It is labeled:

FORSHEDA | A085712 | RDS 63.5 | 5H-15067 | 3

The inner diameter is about 2.6 inches (fits perfectly on the spindle) and the outer diameter is slightly over 3 inches.

Take it off of that mess and get a pic of it from both sides as well as a better side angle shot.

If it is what I think it is, it's not supossed to be there.

Does it resemble the seal on the left?

Hey sleepy,
When you buy your spindle needle bearings it should come with that seal, and a little bitty one about the size of a quarter, which goes over the end of the needle bearings

If you buy a spindle bearing kit like the one above (that's a 60 kit but a 44 kit is the same only smaller) it will come with that seal. But it doesn't go on the front side of the spindle. It goes on the stub shaft slinger behind the spindle.

:stupid - I think thats one of those things you can't buy seperate, only comes in the kit. Which Dealer did ya go to?? Fred Jones downtown has always been able to find the odd stuff for me. Good luck---Fog

Thanks foghorn, I'll try them. I went to 5 star ford.

Dogon, I got a kit from Jeff's but this is larger. The OEM one you are talking about is pretty much identical to this one but about 3/4 the size. The replacement is shaped differently and is missing the metal ring. I've already installed the new spindles so those are on the vehicle; I'll have to uninstall after work today if you need to see a side-by-side.

I've only had this vehicle since mid-december so I don't know for sure if this is supposed to be there or not (I didn't put it there!) but if not, what stabilizes the blue ring? Without the seal in question the blue ring can be pushed all the way down on the spindle...

I'm guessin here but it looks like the "blue one" is the one that should fit snugly into the back side of the rotor hub, and is the inner seal for the bearing's. If its falling through you might check the hub to see if it has been ate out from when the bearing failed and not letting the seal seat properly. and the black ring is part two of the same seal. If your spindle is showing signs of minor "old" damage it could be a "barrier" type seal that someone has put in there. Remember thats just a guess though.........Good Luck

from my 96's CD:

1.Using High-Temperature 4x4 Front Axle and Wheel Bearing Grease E8TZ-19590-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C198-A, thoroughly lubricate the needle bearing and coat the front wheel spindles or face that mates with the seals of the front wheel spindle.

2.Assemble the front wheel spindle over the halfshaft onto the knuckle studs. Tighten the retaining nuts to 68-81 N-m (50-60 lb-ft) (Models 50 and 60) or 47 N-m (35 lb-ft) (Model 44).

3.For F-150 and Bronco only, install outer spindle rolling diaphragm seal (RDS) to the front wheel spindle. Seat the RDS by lightly tapping on the inner sheet metal lip of the seal using Spindle Seal Replacer T95T-3132-C with Driver Handle T83T-3132-A1 and a hammer to make sure it is seated squarely.

4.Remove the front inner wheel bearing, wheel hub grease seal (1190) from the front disc brake hub and rotor using Bearing Cup Puller T77F-1102-A and Impact Slide Hammer T50T-100-A. Inspect bearings and replace as necessary.
5.Inspect the bearing cups for pits or cracks. If necessary, remove with a drift. If new cups are installed, install new cones and rollers.
6.Lubricate the bearings with High Temperature 4x4 Front Axle and Wheel Bearing Grease E8TZ-19590-A or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESA-M1C198-A. Clean all old grease from the front disc brake hub and rotor. Pack the cones and rollers. If a bearing packer is not available, work as much lubricant as possible between the rollers and the cages.
7.CAUTION: Inboard face of wheel bearing can is the running surface of the spindle rolling diaphragm seal (RDS). Any nicks or bends on the seal can surface will cause improper sealing.
Position the front inner wheel bearing in the inner cup and install the new wheel hub grease seal using a hammer, Driver Handle T80T-4000-W and the proper seal installer (Hub Seal Replacer T95T-1175-A for F-150 and Bronco).
8.Carefully position the hub and disc assembly on the front wheel spindle.
9.Install the front outer wheel bearing, and wheel retainer nut or lock nuts and lockwashers.
10.Adjust the wheel bearings. Refer to «Front Wheel Bearing» in the Adjustments portion of this section.
11.For vehicles with automatic locking hubs, install cam assembly. Refer to «Automatic Locking Hubs».
12.CAUTION: Improper sequence of three-piece thrust washers will result in excessive wear of assembly.
Install three-piece thrust washers (first metal, second plastic, third splined) and C-ring or snap ring on the halfshaft groove.
13.Install tire and wheel (1007) as described in «Section 04-04».
14.Install the locking hubs. Refer to «Locking Hubs» in the Removal and Installation portion of this section.
15.Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.

thanks miesk and everybody else, i found it!!! the napa number written on the box is the assembly (NAPA part number 25050) while the seal itself is NAPA 25009. Cross-referenced to a ford part number came up with F5TZ1190BA, 62.5mm inner diameter and 82mm outer.

Of course NAPA only had one available in all of oklahoma, so I had to buy the assembly and one extra seal instead of just two seals (~$15 extra) but i am still very happy!
