The event was a resounding success as recreationists and ODF staff pulled together to remove an amazing amount of garbage and debris from the Tillamook State Forest. Wayne Brown of the Reforestation Unit led a team of volunteers from the Oregon Bush Hackers to remove 70+ tires and to clean-up several dumpsites located throughout the Wheeler Basin. Greg Juber, Protection Supervisor, worked with a team to clean several sites in the Upper Beaver Dam Road, 7 Cedars, and Old Saddle Mountain areas. They returned with three rigs loaded to overflowing with garbage ranging from a burn barrel to a couple of sets of old sofa springs. Randy Peterson the District Recreation Coordinator, led volunteers to identified dumpsites along Beaver Dam Road from the Sandshed to the Browns Camp Rock Pit. The group picked up televisions, computers, small appliances, and many tires. Drew Walker of the Protection Unit led an enthusiastic group from the Braille Trail Four Wheelers up Storeyburn Road. His group winched old furniture and appliances up from where they had been discarded down embankments. Drew also assisted in identifying and mapping dumpsites prior to the event. In addition to the groups led or supported by ODF staff, there were groups led by members of the recreation community. Roger Christal of the Brush Busters, supported by Bruce Harris of ODF worked with members of 2 Big Broncos to remove one vehicle, a truck canopy, several computers, and a wealth of shooting debris from the South Lousignot Road system. Wayne Salisbury of Oregon Equestrian Trails worked with a group at a site on HWY 6. The group brought in 50 tires, mattresses, and two truckloads of general garbage. Joe Reeves of Oregon Equestrian Trails organized two groups to work in the Wheeler Basin. One group worked to clean up an old Elk Hunters' Camp in the Bell Camp Road area. The other group cleaned up sites located at Camp Nine and along Salmonberry Road. In all 73 volunteers and 6 ODF employees removed: - 205 tires - approximately 7 tons of garbage - 1 vehicle - 1 truck canopy - approximately 4 tons of scrap metal - 12 appliances Clubs and Organizations that were represented included: - Oregon Bush Hackers - Mid-Valley Crawlers - Cascade Cruisers - Sierra Club - Mazamas - Portland United Mountain Pedalers - Oregon Equestrian Trails - Brush Busters - 2 Big Broncos - Braille Trail Four Wheelers Businesses that donated services were: - Sweet's Septic which donated two porta-potties for the event - SWATCO Sanitary Service which provided three 30-yard dumpsters for the clean-up Thanks to all who participated for helping achieve another successful SOLV event!
