View Full Version : 1978 Ford Bronco with 460efi ADVICE
RaisedIIPerfection 04-21-2003, 05:57 AM Hey Gang,
I know i havent been around in awhile but to update everyone, the beast is on the road but has some bugs that have to be worked out....For one its the engine. Its on its last leg and Im thinking for the future.I found a 89 f350 with a 460efi for only 350 bux with harness, computer etc...Anyone know if the swap really worth the time and effort? Also whats the pros and cons?power?torque?upgrades? All and any info will be greatly appreciated.

offroad_joe 04-21-2003, 12:48 PM It's a waste of time and money Jon. Send me the guys address and I'll go make sure he sells it to someone else.
Is it worth the time and effort hell yes.
You will break the d44 but you will do that anyway with 44's. If your driveshafts are worn you will break them also, but like I said earlier with the 44's you will break them anyway.
Pros) HP and Torque and a badass ride.
Cons) You will break everthing that is weak.

well whats the pros and cons of it being better than a carb 460???The d44 is only in there so i can drive my truck...After 5 long years and only being 13 years old,my goal was to drive my truck by my senior year.I was about to go the 60 route but money and time would have set back my goal.So thats why i have the 44 8 lug up front.I dont want to swap in the engine and be like damn in need more HP or yada yada....
81Bronk36 04-21-2003, 10:07 PM Carb pros
-Cheaper
-Less wires, a lot less!
-A lot more options in performance
-easier to trouble shoot
Carb cons
-slightly worse gas milage
-dont handle hills well
EFI Pros
-better gas milage
-idle upside down?? almost
-trickfactor(not that important!!)
EFI cons
-Expensive as hell
-too many damn wires
-too many damn sensors
-good luck troubleshooting on the side of the trail
-Fuel pump??? 2 of em!!(in most cases)
Dont think I missed much!
RaisedIIPerfection 04-21-2003, 10:10 PM Thanks for the info...Ill take that into consideration.....What would you go with? Please vote and give your reasons

RaisedIIPerfection 04-21-2003, 10:20 PM hahahahaha well i got the guy down to 300 with everything....Is $$$$$$$$$$$ still an issue?
Davids78Bronco 04-21-2003, 10:26 PM Get the EFI, Jon. Even 500 would be a deal for everything you're getting
EvilBronc 04-21-2003, 11:18 PM You might want to talk to a guy that goes by the name of i_alone on this board. I belive he has a 79 with a 460efi swap. He used to have a detailed writeup of this swap on his website but the site is down at the moment.
78bronco460 04-23-2003, 10:49 PM I run a 460 with a very good carb and get good performance. I'd be running an EFI motor if I found the deal you did on it. You will have limits to the mod's you can do, but with a 460 under the hood WHO CARES??? Make sure you get the torque converter with it if possible. Good luck.
bronczilla 04-24-2003, 02:58 PM Would be nice to have EFI but I like to keep my rig simple, bought the new Holly Truck Avenger carb. Works great and yea it still pumps at 45 deg.
offroad_joe 04-24-2003, 11:39 PM Go with the EFI Jon you won't regret it.
Carbs can be ok if they are setup right but you will always have to tinker with it to keep it running it's best.
EFI will not stall out or flood out no matter how much bouncing or what angle your on.
Nothing sucks worse than hitting a big ass rut or dip on the way up a hill you don't want to back down and the f'n carb floods out. So here you are puckered cheeks trying to get the flooded out pig started so you can atleast have power steering and vac assist brakes as you back down this big ass hill. Not that I know about this or anything.
