View Full Version : NE Chapter Paragon Meet - Summer 04
Kallure 03-15-2004, 11:25 PM Just a thought. I know there's quite a few events coming up this summer like the East Coast Trail Meet and the Bloomsburg Jamboree.
But what kind of effort, time, notice or anything else would it take for us to get a Northeast Chapter Meet together for Paragon sometime during the summer, maybe towards the middle of August or something?
There's many of us who've been wheeling together on quite a few occasions and last months trail ride was probably the biggest turnout we've had but I have big aspirations and would like to see everyone, or almost everyone, there next time.
The good thing about doing sometime during the summer is that Red Ridge campground will be open so it's only $10 bucks a night to camp, as opposed to the $40 we pay at the hotel. It's also warmer with no snow!
Paragon seems to be the biggest legal wheeling place that's almost central for the chapter. There's always Rausch Creek that we could check into running one of the days.
Just an idea. While I LOVE all the guys we've met, it would be nice to meet everyone else. :thumbup
Figured I could at least start the chatter about it.
drexelsteve 03-16-2004, 12:06 AM do we really have to wait till the summer? i was thinkin of goin up for the next monthly ride, even just for a day or so.
Kallure 03-16-2004, 12:09 AM do we really have to wait till the summer? i was thinkin of goin up for the next monthly ride, even just for a day or so.
i was thinking summer for our next BIG run. there's nothing saying we can't do small trips in between.
i'm still wanting to take the car up to centralia and explore, so there's all sorts of things to do.
i figure if we start talking a good four or five months before the summer maybe we can have a fairly big turnout.
Kurt Rohmer 03-16-2004, 01:32 AM I'm in, Been itchin to put the big red machine through her paces. Name the Date and the Time and I'll be at Paragon an hour early! I'll pass it along to anyone in CT who wants to go.
TCRIMSONK 03-16-2004, 02:02 AM Is there a minimum reccomended mods list before heading to paragon? would a stock bronco on 33's be okay?
SquattyD 03-16-2004, 04:19 AM if its done by then ill be there....better make it june '08
bnkrtstk 03-16-2004, 09:32 AM Is there a minimum reccomended mods list before heading to paragon? would a stock bronco on 33's be okay?
That's what I wheel, and except for one hill that I was playing on have had no problems.
I was thinking the same thing, if we do Rausch we can camp there. But I've never been there so can't comment on the wheeling. Even the guys who don't wheel could come and camp, and maybe ride with someone :shrug
Count me in :thumbup
94 XLT BRONCO 03-16-2004, 10:18 AM I will be there this time. Sounds good. Been wanting to meet you guys and have someone to wheel with :thumbup
Kallure 03-16-2004, 10:24 AM Just a heads up in the beginning of the post:
Stock Bronco's will be fine at Paragon. As we've said before with regards to the other Paragon runs, the most modded we've had so far are drexelsteve and reptillikus. But we run what the group as a WHOLE can do. If we have modded trucks and stock trucks, we're gonna run medium trails (mid-greens and maybe a few low blues). It actually has surprised me the more and more we've gone what those stockers can do.
Minimum SUV Requirements for Paragon:
Seat belts, 4WD w/low range, tow hooks front (and rear), full size spare, battery tie down, flags you buy at the park
Also, if you like your running boards, it would be feasible to take them off before you come down.
Both parks require at least three trucks in a group. Rausch Creek is by reservation only. RC has some really cool trails - lots of mud and trees! :thumbup A lot of uphill and downhill.
I was initally under the impression that you had to run RC with a trail guide, but after reading over their site, you don't have to. Both parks have open rides and while they can be okay b/c you run with a guide, it gets rough because they split you into huge groups and you don't have the freedom to explore.
For those of you who want to check out the parks:
Paragon (http://paragonap.com)
Rausch Creek (http://www.rauschcreekoffroadpark.org/home.asp)
TCRIMSONK 03-16-2004, 12:05 PM My wheeling friend drives a '97 Grand Cherokee. It always seems to do very well, but he is worried about messing up his nice shiney daily driver. Would it be best for him to leave his Jeep at home?
bnkrtstk 03-16-2004, 12:08 PM As long as he stays away from Steve, his truck will be fine. He doesn't play well with GC's.
TCRIMSONK 03-16-2004, 12:18 PM I just did the mapquest. Paragon is a 3 hour drive, and Rousch is 2 and a half. I can do either one, but I would rather not for the next few months, as I may be getting laid off soon. (I get reimbursed for unused vacation time when I am laid off, so I want to save up as much as I can, so I won't be broke when I lose my job)
The two parks seem to be pretty close together, How many days would you all want to spend at either one? Any thoughts of doing them both back to back?
TCRIMSONK 03-16-2004, 12:20 PM Hey, I just mapquested Centralia, and it is also in the same area. Maybe we could make this a 3 for 1 trip?
Kallure 03-16-2004, 03:39 PM TCRIMSON, listen to bnkrtstk, Steve doesn't play well with them GCs. Also, there are some fairly tight trails in both Paragon and Rausch Creek. If he's worried about dents or scratches or anything, his safest bet would be to leave it at home. If you like the pretty paint, neither park ain't the place for the Jeep.
When we did the UCP Charity Ride, we did Paragon on Saturday and Rausch Creek on Sunday. They are about forty minutes apart and if I remember closely, we camped near Paragon and then put all of our stuff in my car when we rode Rausch Creek the next day (so the stuff wasn't flying around). That could be feasible.
While it would be cool to do Centralia all at once, I think Steve and I were just talking about sightseeing there - not much to warrant taking an extra day off work for. But definitely a day trip on the weekend or something, for us at least.
TCRIMSONK 03-16-2004, 04:56 PM I understand your perspective, But I might be willing to take an extra day off, to avoid an additional 6 hour trip (3 up, 3 back) and 300 miles on the already ailing Bronco.
So is my impression correct, that you can do all of paragon, or rouch creek in one day?
bnkrtstk 03-16-2004, 05:10 PM So is my impression correct, that you can do all of paragon, or rouch creek in one day?
Paragon is big enough to take up two or more days, as long as rig and driver are properly equipped and prepared. I can not comment on RC.
drexelsteve 03-16-2004, 06:16 PM rausch creek isn't quite as big as paragon, then again i've only been there once with a guided trail ride so we only about half of the park. I'd say that you could do the whole thing in a day. well not the whole thing, i'd have to stay away from rock creek
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b3d630b3127cce8c226e75d42d0000000610
then again, with the right spotter... :toothless
reptillikus 03-16-2004, 06:47 PM Get a locker, ill spot ya through it! :thumbup Id love to see that in person, looks like a fun challenge.
i still want to go to RC!!!!!! We need to set something up over there.
Paragon is big enoguh that we could spend three days wheelin in the park. Then we'd probably hit everything. Well, everything that the usual group could handle. I can think of a couple more cool trails ya'll aint seen, but prolly only me and Steve coud run em from start to finish, and thats no fun.
Another interesting tidbit.....Paragon is now under new management! The people who were running it before now own the park. Theyre changing a few things. For starters, all our waiver cards will be going the way of the west. They now require the 'group leader' to be there 30 mins before, and anyone who wants to lead a group has to go thru a 30 min course to get qualified to do so. I think you have to do that every year now. Personaly, i think its a good idea, and since im aiming to be there with the zuk in may, ill be sure to sign up for it.
I would love to see a FSB EC ride at Paragon next summer, that would be awesome. We'll have enough experienced people from the NE chapter that we'll be able to set up trail groups for all difficulty levels, and maybe even some other things, like a hill climb, or (if the weather is right) we can do a mud drag or whatever. Lots of cool things we can do.
TCRIMSONK 03-16-2004, 07:26 PM WooHoo! Just found out that I'm not getting laid off! I am SO there!
gators0204 03-16-2004, 11:58 PM TC,
I have a shiny, straight, rust free truck. Been there 3 times now with no dents. I get a few surface scratches, but they can be buffed out.
I say, tell him to bring it.
Kurt Rohmer 03-17-2004, 01:30 AM Set a Date and a Time, the wife and I are down for the dirt. Her only request for the Paragon Run..... a decent hotel (girlie things .. ya know). Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent hotel in the vicinity of Paragon? It will be our first time there, so I'll want to make it nice for her. That way she'll be happy when I BONZAI the trails later.
bnkrtstk 03-17-2004, 09:27 AM Steve- come get that third member so you can spool it.
Rep- I'll follow you on any trail :toothless or at least try to.
Gators -me too...............................not
Kurt-Ramada Inn in Hazleton, inexpensive and clean, or the Hampton they are nice no matter where you go. Or go HERE (www.paragonap.com) and click under lodging.
TC- glad to hear it :beer
stangmata 03-17-2004, 09:43 AM Ok I'm in this time!!!!! :chili
bnkrtstk 03-17-2004, 10:22 AM Ok I'm in this time!!!!! :chili
Yeah OK, IF you show up. I'll be the first one to give you a beer. :beer
stangmata 03-17-2004, 10:25 AM Yeah OK, IF you show up. I'll be the first one to give you a beer. :beer
You better be!! As long as no one dies in the family and my truck is running I'll be there. I'm ordering my tow hooks soon and I've got an inquiry in with Dave on sliders.....so yes the running boards will be coming off in a bit.
And with the weather promoting camping...there's no way I can miss out :chili: :chili:
94 XLT BRONCO 03-17-2004, 10:28 AM ....so yes the running boards will be coming off in a bit.
:thumbup That will be an improvement, you would loose them anyways there :beer
Im looking forward to this :rockon
Kallure 03-17-2004, 10:59 AM So from what I read on the website, anyone can pretty much take the guide course at Paragon? If so, then there's definitely a thumbs up from me on that one - I know I don't drive, but I can navigate the hell out of that map! :thumbup
Rausch Creek is smaller than Paragon but it's also newer, having just turned a year old this season. Last time we were there, there were trails that were freshly cut and were still being cut. RC has a little over a thousand acres, Paragon has 15,000 acres. You get the idea. Rausch trails all seem to be long and winding compared to Paragon. It's definitely a park you could do in a day without missing much.
The coolest thing about Paragon is because it's so big I'm still seeing things I've never seen because it's hard to cover the whole park in one weekend. It allows you to go up several times a year and not have to run the same thing.
So do we want to do a three day thing or just a Saturday and Sunday run? If we did three days, we could do the weekend at Paragon and maybe Friday/Monday at Rausch Creek. We could make sure enough people take the guide course so that if people do want to leave on one of the days, there will be a definite guide for Paragon.
94 XLT BRONCO 03-17-2004, 11:13 AM I can do Saturday and Sunday for sure. Any longer depends on whats going on at work at the time.....tough to say now.
bnkrtstk 03-17-2004, 11:14 AM I'd do the guide course too. I think a get there Friday mid-day and wheel Sat/Sun would be cool. I'll make a point not to beat my truck too badly so I can wheel both days. If it was in the summer, we would probably stay over unitl Monday, just for the extra downtime, and so Sunday morning wasn't a mad dash to break camp.
stangmata 03-17-2004, 11:47 AM I'm in for a Saturday to Sunday trip. Being the new-jack i don't get much vacation.
Paragon definately sounds like the better deal to me.
Aikidoka 03-17-2004, 04:07 PM i was thinking summer for our next BIG run. there's nothing saying we can't do small trips in between.
i'm still wanting to take the car up to centralia and explore, so there's all sorts of things to do.
i figure if we start talking a good four or five months before the summer maybe we can have a fairly big turnout.
Actually I know a few people were mentioning that exact same thing over in the Centrailia thread. Maybe we should set that up to over in that thread.
reptillikus 03-17-2004, 06:44 PM Considering the big EC ride is in july, i dont think id be able to weasel more days off out of my boss unless it was later in the year, like september or so. Id still be down for a weekend, but i dunno if i could commit to a 4-day ride until we have a date set.
Leonard 03-17-2004, 10:33 PM ya'll know me i'm down for just about anything. i think something in august one day at paragon the other at rausch would be good i'm willing to give rausch another shot. and some good news on the mod front finally got a bunch of stuff for my engine so i'm looking to get that in around may or so and i'm getting a freaking welder baby, i think.
bnkrtstk 03-17-2004, 10:46 PM ya'll know me i'm down for just about anything. i think something in august one day at paragon the other at rausch would be good i'm willing to give rausch another shot. and some good news on the mod front finally got a bunch of stuff for my engine so i'm looking to get that in around may or so and i'm getting a freaking welder baby, i think.
You know how to get a hold of me if you need a hand, or a hoist or both :thumbup
Kurt Rohmer 03-17-2004, 11:37 PM :chili: OK, I'll propose this.... JUNE 4TH, itsa Friday. Meet at a local watering hole for preparation on our attack of PARAGON. Blast trails on Saturday all day, and Sunday morning and early afternoon. Break camp Sunday early evening, have a c-ya later din din, and hit the road for home and work on Monday. :thumbup :beer :crazy :deal
TCRIMSONK 03-17-2004, 11:50 PM that sounds like a good plan. I can probly do it. Can you local check out the thread I just started, I'm trying to head up this weekend!
http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15477
drexelsteve 03-18-2004, 12:34 AM once again, do we really have to wait till june!!!???? i like to wheel more than once a year :goodfinge
Kallure 03-18-2004, 02:42 PM what if we did one in may and one in august? or one in may, june and august? since red ridge will be open by then, you're not wasting too much money on hotels. and may has a three day weekend for some of us, though some people like to go away for memorial day.
i'll be savvy and create a poll ... see what kind of response we elicit. There, it's done. And you can check more than one weekend too.
bnkrtstk 03-18-2004, 02:57 PM Isn't the big TN ride the weekend for 7/31-8/2? Memorial day doesn't bother me, I'll have the pool open by then, but the water might still be too chilly to have a swim-bq. June 5-6 is cool too. So I guess all but the last one will work.
Kallure 03-18-2004, 04:00 PM Yeah, I'm not thinking. I've been runnning around all day. I don't know if I can edit that poll or not, so just disregard the date that runs the same time with the big East Coast ride. Sorry.
drexelsteve 03-18-2004, 05:53 PM well here's another thought, does anyone wanna go see the neuroc season opener may 22nd or 23rd? i don't think we'll be able to wheel but i'd love to take a day trip and see some buggies thrashin the rocks. :shrug
Kallure 03-18-2004, 06:02 PM well here's another thought, does anyone wanna go see the neuroc season opener may 22nd or 23rd? i don't think we'll be able to wheel but i'd love to take a day trip and see some buggies thrashin the rocks. :shrug
you know i'm in! :toothless
reptillikus 03-18-2004, 06:47 PM oh, yeah, ill be there for neuroc. :thumbup
Id love to see that stuff up close and in person.
edit:
i cant vote for a weekend just yet. Need to check out the calendar at work.
jackhart 03-18-2004, 07:06 PM hey guys, sorry to jump in here so late, i was (still am) away in florida. i am with drexelsteve, why wait? the sooner the better as far as i'm concerned. if we had one paragon run a quarter (winter, spring, summer, fall) i think that would be great, of course the EC run might get in the way of that. anyway, i am really itching to try the new locker out. may sounds good to me, another weekend trip would be great at paragon. don't think i want to drive the hours for neuroc, tho. take lots of pics.
Leonard 03-18-2004, 10:03 PM i'm up for going soon. all i need is enough of a notice to see if work cooperates usually i work the last 2 weekends of the month but that changes to.
Kurt Rohmer 03-19-2004, 01:22 AM All Right!! May 22nd, the date is good to go, but uh, sorry for bein a newbie but... whats Neuroc??
bnkrtstk 03-19-2004, 09:34 AM All Right!! May 22nd, the date is good to go, but uh, sorry for bein a newbie but... whats Neuroc??
It's a rockcrawling competition. I'll go check it out. No matter when we go wheeling I'll try to get there. I used to go at least once a month and miss it.
94 XLT BRONCO 03-19-2004, 09:47 AM hmm.. sounds like maybe we outa think about a ride every quarter like Dave said based upon the responses here :shrug If theres enough interest to be worth it?? Never seen Neuroc either? I take it thats a trip just for that, not wheeling also?
bnkrtstk 03-19-2004, 09:51 AM I think they close the park to wheeling to cover their butts, because there will be tons of people milling about the park to watch the action, On the other hand they won't be on the trails most of the people would be using, so you'd think they would keep it open.
Kallure 03-19-2004, 10:24 AM Neuroc is spectator only. You cannot wheel that weekend, simply because there's going to be tons of people there and they can't worry about the hardcore buggies running as well as people being loose in the park. So just a heads up, May 22nd-23rd, if you plan on going, will not be a wheeling trip, it will be spectator only. More information on Neuroc is available here. (http://neuroc.com)
I would like to do a ride every quarter, funds willing. Late fall and winter get a little more difficult because the campgrounds are closed so we have to shell out money for a hotel, but we've been able to do it. I'd say we set it up for every quarter, but again, I'd like to do a bit more wheeling this summer, which is why I've proposed trips in May, August and September. In theory, we could do all but we'll see on that. I figured I'd leave July alone because of the East Coast ride and the Bloomsburg Jamboree.
bnkrtstk 03-19-2004, 10:27 AM I've been in the mood to hit the NJ pines. Once I figure out my truck situation I'm there.
Aikidoka 03-19-2004, 10:54 AM I've been in the mood to hit the NJ pines. Once I figure out my truck situation I'm there.
I'd be interested in trying that out also.
stangmata 03-19-2004, 12:32 PM I can't make Neuroc, but I will definatley be down for some wheeling in the beginning of June!!
big pa s 03-19-2004, 12:36 PM I have been wanting to go to paragon for a long time now. I might be in for it depending on when everyone is going.
Kallure 03-19-2004, 12:42 PM Can a mod edit that poll so August 1-2 is no longer an option since the East Coast meet is then? Or show me how to edit it? I completely forgot about the EC Ride.
Steve and I are pretty much down for whenever, especially since summer time warrants no hotels. In theory, we could probably do quite a few trips this summer. It seems a whole lot easier when you have a passenger to help split the cost! :thumbup
June 5-6 seems to be our strongest date right now. There are always other options and if a date doesn't work out for someone, there could be more runs in the future as long as we have a few weeks notice. Paragon isn't too far from us but getting all the c.rap together for the trip takes a little bit of time.
I'm also down for some NJ Pines wheeling too - maybe before it gets too hot and starts smelling like P.O.O.P!
stangmata 03-19-2004, 01:23 PM I'm also down for some NJ Pines wheeling too - maybe before it gets too hot and starts smelling like P.O.O.P!
Does anyone have any info on that?
bnkrtstk 03-19-2004, 01:52 PM Does anyone have any info on that?
Some of the puddles get ripe in the summer heat. Cedar water puddles under forest cover, that don't dry up, they just get nasty. I have a couple shirts that got some of the mud from those puddles on them that never came clean.
I don't know why she's complaining when Steve got stuck I was a good host and waded out to hook up the cable. :toothless
drexelsteve 03-19-2004, 01:55 PM :thumbup what are friends for
Kallure 03-19-2004, 01:59 PM I don't know why she's complaining when Steve got stuck I was a good host and waded out to hook up the cable. :toothless
He did and that was awesome for him to do that! But in general, just going through them and stirring up all that water makes things smell .... of course, it could have been one of us and we didn't even know it. :histerica

bnkrtstk 03-19-2004, 03:09 PM Wooded trails, whoopties, mud, sand, and deep puddles. No rocks or hill climbing, some trails are tight, so pin striping is almost unavoidable.
reptillikus 03-19-2004, 05:43 PM Im down for a ride in the pines, havent been there in over a year now.
I like having Quartely Rides to Paragon. It gets ya a few big rides where everyone has more time to plan for the trip, and it gives you plenty of time inbetween to recover from the trip afterwards :toothless
Beyond that, monthly is cool, but i think my boss would kill me if i went wheeling every single month, as i always take the monday after off :brownbag Better than having to call out cuz the truck is broken, right?
pin striping is almost unavoidable.
So it was raining pretty much all week, right? So since my truck was actually clean, i was looking at my paint and decided that my truck is now officially two-tone :toothless

I stuck it, but I couldnt figure out how to get rid of the one option. I think maybe, only an administrator can do it.

Accessory Man 03-21-2004, 07:31 PM I don't care what weekend it is, I am gonna be there at least for one day. If something comes up this time I will HANG MYSELF, and have the pictures posted here for all to see. I only met everyone once, but I miss you guys as well as the fact I want to go back to Paragon. On a side note, anyone seen Keith lately? Or did he drop off the Planet.
drexelsteve 03-21-2004, 07:40 PM thats a pretty good question. haven't heard from him in an awful long time. :shrug
Accessory Man 03-21-2004, 07:51 PM I was mounting my new Hi Lift Jack to the roof rack today and I thought of him for some reason, I think becuase we used his Jack to get someones Differentail of a rock last time.
I definately want to cam again, I think it adds to the experience, mayve if work picks up and I get some cash I will bring a hooker or two :toothless
Leonard 03-21-2004, 08:09 PM camping definatly makes things more fun and cheaper which makes it all the better. wanna make a ride soon even if its only for a day at the barrons or whatever, starting to get the itch agian.
jackhart 03-21-2004, 09:19 PM , mayve if work picks up and I get some cash I will bring a hooker or two :toothless
heh heh, he said hooker... :toothless
drexelsteve 03-21-2004, 09:32 PM well lets not make it too soon, my rear pinion bearing's wasted. Guess it's time to do a gear swap huh.
reptillikus 03-21-2004, 09:45 PM excuses excuses :goodfinge
bnkrtstk 03-22-2004, 09:28 AM well lets not make it too soon, my rear pinion bearing's wasted. Guess it's time to do a gear swap huh.
I have that third member if you're keeping it the same ratio Come and get it.
Kallure 03-22-2004, 12:55 PM If we're doing Paragon, May's gonna have to be the earliest since the campgrounds don't open until then. Other than that, weekend runs can happen, once Steve gets whatever he needs to be fixed on the truck fixed.
BTW, Dave, thanks for stickying that. Don't worry about removing that option if you can't -- people'll just have to pay attention or we'll just disregard it.
I won't be around as much until later this week because I'm in Cleveland - again, and it's snowing and it sucks. But so is life! No internet access - I miss it!! :cry
Bilzhorse 03-22-2004, 10:58 PM Hey NE Chapter. Mind if I tag along? We don't have much good wheelin' down this way and I've always wanted to run Paragon. I know there are other Dixie members that would love to join you all. :thumbup
drexelsteve 03-22-2004, 11:12 PM the more the merrier :thumbup

jackhart 03-23-2004, 11:24 AM hell, why not just send the dixie chapter an invite? i agree, the more the merrier. bilzhorse, why don't you paste an attachment to this thread and invite your southern bro's to come? that would be cool. :thumbup or i guess i could get off my lazy a$$ and do it myself. :brownbag
edit: got off my lazy a$$ and threw dixie an invite... :thumbup
Kallure 03-23-2004, 12:57 PM C'mon up, if you remember could you bring me some Lipton Southern Style Tea please? :shrug
all nice and sweet - my grandmother makes tea like that! :thumbup
looks like if the dixie boys are gonna be joining we're gonna have to pick a date and get in touch with paragon. sort of like an "informal" east coast gathering.
Bilzhorse 03-23-2004, 10:19 PM C'mon up, if you remember could you bring me some Lipton Southern Style Tea please?
You mean the kind with a little bit of tea added to the sugar. :histerica
Thanks for the invite. I bet you get a good response from my fellow Dixie Chapter members :rebelflag
bnkrtstk 03-23-2004, 10:44 PM You mean the kind with a little bit of tea added to the sugar. :histerica

That's the one :thumbup Depending on when we do it,and how many attend we can have a FSB swim-b-q at casa Bnkrtstk. :shrug

Mmmmm food :drinkbud
Kallure 03-24-2004, 11:45 AM yummm, food and swimmin' pools! :thumbup
once i get back from ohio, i'll start making some phone calls/emails up to paragon and stuff to find out exactly how that guide course is structured and how many people can take that course at the same time. then we can tie down some more information/dates/and all that other fun stuff.
stangmata 03-24-2004, 12:02 PM Mmmmm food :drinkbud
I second that :drinkbud
drexelsteve 03-24-2004, 01:31 PM The training is given at the time you pay..it's given in LARGE groups..it's about 15-20 mins long..it's basic safety information on the park, who to contact if anyone gets hurt, sign and trail markers.. It's a basic COMMON SENSE speach on wheeling at the park. At the end everyone that listened signs a paper saying they received the course and gets a card.
Yea, I don't believe it is intended to be a "wheeling tutorial", but more like what was mentioned earlier....just a basic common sense type of thing, so everyone has a better understanding of what they should do in the event of anything happening in the Park.
i don't think it's anything to worry about :thumbup
reptillikus 03-24-2004, 09:48 PM yeah, i know a few people who took it already (5, i think,) last weekend.
Its basically them running with you on the 101 course, going over basic trail stuff, recovery, and that jazz. you could probably sleep through it and pass it.
Kallure 03-31-2004, 12:10 PM So should we shoot for the weekend of June 5th for our first big run of the summer? There can be more afterwards but I figure the 5th can start us off sooner than later - I don't know about you guys, but I'm dying to get back on the trails.
Red Ridge will be open then and now that I think about it, I don't think I'd want to try and camp there Memorial Day weekend, which is opening weekend for the campground.
But here's another issue - the monthly ride is that same weekend. I'm not too sure how it works, but everytime we've ended up there on a monthly ride weekend, we had to run with a guide, something I'm not too interested in. You guys would know more about whether or not we'd be able to run on our own if we have a big enough group - but I have doubts about that since they like to know where all the groups are on days like that.
If that's an issue, the next free weekend where no big groups are scheduled is the 19th of June - that's the weekend of Father's Day, so I don't know if that matters to any of you. The weekend of the 12th-13th has three groups scheduled for Saturday and one for Sunday.
So it's you guys' call! :thumbup
stangmata 03-31-2004, 12:14 PM I'm down for June 5th for Paragon.
I can't bail on traditional "golf with the old man" day.
Vote! 6/5/2004!
jackhart 03-31-2004, 04:15 PM I was hoping for something a little sooner, say, in May, but I am down with June 5 if that is the consensus...
Is it really bad going with a guide??
bnkrtstk 03-31-2004, 04:17 PM Don't fret Dave we can do a smaller trip in May too. :thumbup
TCRIMSONK 03-31-2004, 04:35 PM Is it really bad going with a guide??
Yeah, good question. I'm heading up this weekend for the April Monthly Ride. Will I have to go with a guided group? Is that a bad thing?
Thanks.

bnkrtstk 03-31-2004, 04:40 PM Yeah, good question. I'm heading up this weekend for the April Monthly Ride. Will I have to go with a guided group? Is that a bad thing?
Thanks.
-Darren
Our "guide" for the UCP Ride thought he was some kind of rockcrawling mud hating hero in his Heep. Too bad after we split from the group to find mud, he broke an axle shaft and didn't have a spare. I think most of the guides are Jeep guys. It doesn't make them bad people, just not schooled in the art of FS wheeling.
5.0-BRONCO 03-31-2004, 04:48 PM i never been there before, when is everyone goin, i am pretty much up for the trip when ever, my stock truck can handle it down there right?
bnkrtstk 03-31-2004, 04:50 PM i never been there before, when is everyone goin, i am pretty much up for the trip when ever, my stock truck can handle it down there right?
Your stock truck will do just fine. It looks like I'll be wheeling a stock 89 the next time out, but you might not want to follow me :brownbag
5.0-BRONCO 03-31-2004, 04:58 PM why wouldnt i want to follow u?
Kallure 03-31-2004, 05:09 PM Going with a guide is all a matter of perspective. bnkrtstk is right - most of the guys are 'Heep guys and thus, don't really know much about FS wheeling.
I don't like wheeling with a guide because it's too controlled and you can't just, on a whim, decide to deviate from the plans and go exploring on trails you didn't think you would when the day began. I know the park pretty well and I just like the freedom of being able to decide as you go along.
I should've been a bit more clear - while I'm not a big fan of running with a guide, the problems I have with the monthly ride stem more from the groups they seperate you into. Even when we've got a fairly decent group of us from FSB, they'll still put you into larger groups designated by stock, intermediate, etc.
The problem there is two things: 1.) The groups are huge, anywhere from fifteen to twenty trucks. 2.) The classifications are too broad.
With the groups being that big, you cover less ground because it takes forever to get through the trails. And with the classifications - for instance, there was one time we decided to run with the stock group because the intermediate guys were running mostly trails with big rocks and we didn't want to or have the ability to do rocks without breaking something. So we ran stock and it was kind of boring because we had to be conscious of the fully stock, brand new vehicles - Jeep's with street tires, brand new Montero's and Xterra's, etc.
Personally, as long as they let us run on our own for the monthly ride, I'm fine with it, but if we have to be put into groups that they make, I'd rather do it a different weekend.
TCRIMSONK 03-31-2004, 05:20 PM Can you run on your own during a monthly ride weekend? I might end up with three vehicles, and would probly prefer it. I understand everything that you are saying about not wanting to ride with a guide.
5.0-BRONCO 03-31-2004, 05:27 PM so this is like a real park where its legal to wheel, do u have to go with groups or could u just drive there and pay the 35 and go wheel by yourself or with a few other poeple, my truck is currently stock, would there be other poeple there that i could just follow or go with, i am deffinetly gunna go what ever week end everyone is goin up, anyone got any good driving directions or an address that i could run through map quest, i guess someone will post the date as soon as everyone decides on it, thanks, yes i know i am a noob
Kallure 03-31-2004, 05:47 PM Can you run on your own during a monthly ride weekend?
I highly doubt you'll be able to run on your own this weekend. They're iffy about sending groups out by themselves on the monthly ride because they like to keep the groups seperate so there are no traffic jams on the trails or anything. I think you need a fairly large group to run the monthly ride by yourself - like if all of us were coming up as THE NE Chapter of FSB this weekend.
so this is like a real park where its legal to wheel, do u have to go with groups or could u just drive there and pay the 35 and go wheel by yourself or with a few other poeple, my truck is currently stock, would there be other poeple there that i could just follow or go with, i am deffinetly gunna go what ever week end everyone is goin up, anyone got any good driving directions or an address that i could run through map quest, i guess someone will post the date as soon as everyone decides on it, thanks, yes i know i am a noob
It's okay, I'll let the boys pick on ya! :thumbup You can find information on Paragon by visiting their website: www.paragonap.com (http://www.paragonap.com). It is a legal park set up solely for wheeling and you have to be in groups of at least three to go out there. Their address is on their page and you can use it to MapQuest, although those of us from the Philly area typically set up a meeting place and follow each other up. You being from S Jersey would let you meet up with us since we're from the southwest suburbs of Philly. Once we figure out a date, we're gonna let everyone know.
jackhart 03-31-2004, 07:23 PM Personally, as long as they let us run on our own for the monthly ride, I'm fine with it, but if we have to be put into groups that they make, I'd rather do it a different weekend.
ok i get the picture. i don't want to do a guided tour.
reptillikus 03-31-2004, 08:27 PM Its not easy to get your own group on the weekend of a monhtly ride. Ive done it, but then i "know people who know people" :imp
(Basically, a group of people whove been wheelin there since they opened & even blazed some of the trails)
Better off not going on that weekend, in the summer that parking lot gets pretty full pretty quick. I dont mind ridin with a guide (i know a couple, theyre good guys), but being stuck (for example) in a group with a stock Xterra, would suck.
stangmata 04-01-2004, 10:05 AM I'm not up for going with a guide either.
And the guided thing wasn't for the early June trip, was it? (I admit I missed something obvious)
Kallure 04-01-2004, 10:24 AM The early June trip (5th-6th) is also the weekend of a monthly ride, which is when it's hard to get your own group -- which is why I figured a different weekend if everyone still wants to run on our own. The weekend right after that - the 12th & 13th - is open. There's three groups registered to run that day but I'm sure we won't be big enough to interfere with each other. And on Sunday there's only one group scheduled to run. So maybe push it up a week? :shrug
jackhart 04-01-2004, 12:54 PM ok with me... :thumbup

Wow! You guys have free pancakes? :lowblow
Kallure 04-16-2004, 05:34 PM So we kinda abandoned this after all the scrotum talk. June is approaching quickly boys, let's get something together.
Would the 12th-13th be good for everyone? It would be nice to avoid a monthly ride weekend for reasons we've discussed before. And the weekend after the 12th/13th is Father's Day, so wouldn't want to infringe on that.
I know Steve and I were talking about heading up for Neuroc to watch in May. But June could be our first big chapter trip of the summer that Stang's gonna bail on!! :histerica
No seriously, let's make some definite plans here. I wanna go back!

Oh well - those of us who don't ride up together usually ending up meeting and hanging out in the same place that night.
TCRIMSONK 04-22-2004, 02:59 PM so do most people take that friday off, and head up during the day? That's what I expect to be doing.

We're only hour and a half, two hours away so we actually work and then head out around 3:00-4:00pm, maybe a little later depending on how busy I am at work or when we can get out. With traffic, and stopping and driving just 60mph, we usually roll in around 7:00-7:30, set up camp, start the first and crack open the beers. But we live a little closer so don't know how long it takes you guys to get there.
:beer
TCRIMSONK 04-22-2004, 03:36 PM It's gonna be a 3 hour drive for me, and I don't get off work til 6. I'll probly be making the drive without a second vehicle this time, because my wheeling friends are not gonna be willing to drive the trails that I hope we will be driving.
bnkrtstk 04-22-2004, 03:43 PM More than likely I'll take Friday off, this way we can make the drive in daylight. We'll probably take two vehicles and the Mrs. isn't too fond of driving to the mountains at night.

SuperDave 04-23-2004, 12:08 PM I am trying to make a little mini vacation out of this. I was thinking about taking a couple of days extra and making side trips to the Harley Davidson Plant in York and then Touring the Hershey plant and then stop at Gettysburg on the way home. Would anyone be interesting in this also. I would do all the calling to make arrangements.

If you're gonna do this, take a few hours to swin by Centralia. It's just a little south of Paragon, and pretty interesting to check out. FYI, Hershey is a good park for younger kids, up to maybe 12 years old.
Kallure 04-23-2004, 12:41 PM The Yuengling factory is in Pottsville, about 45mins from Paragon, thirty from Centralia. I want to do that sometime, just for the sake of it.

This time ill be headed straight out there. Im considering towing the bronco out there, just cuz i can :goodfinge, and cuz itll be good practice for the TN ride, but it all hinges on whether or not we get tiedowns made up to strap the truck to in time.

I'm on Walnut St between just off 463.
Kallure 04-29-2004, 03:23 PM Okay, so here's the deal, just to catch everybody up. The trip to Paragon is for the weekend of June 12th-13th (month and a half! :chili: )
Many of us will probably be leaving Friday evening at varying times and Steve and I can do an Ikea meet for a caravan of people from our area (usually Leonard & Assman & Keith). Most everyone is probably going to straggle into the campground or their respective hotels as the evening goes on, but if you aren't planning on leaving Friday, we will probably be meeting up at Paragon around 8:00-8:30am on Saturday morning. We'll give a list of cell numbers out for those who don't already have it so we know who to expect and who not to expect.
If you're stock and you want to come, don't worry about it. As we said before, we've had stock trucks do very well and we won't take you anywhere we don't think you can handle. Take off your running boards though! If you have like superhumungous 3000" tires don't come b/c you'll make us look bad! Kidding! :toothless
The trip is open to anyone who wants to to show up but we've got to be a little on point and have an idea of whose coming and whose not so we're not waiting in the parking lot ('cause bnkrtstk doesn't like waiting!) and so we can make sure we have a decent sized campsite, because it looks like we're going to have more people camping this time than usual, which means we have to have room for the camp area AS WELL as the trucks.
For those who want to camp: Red Ridge is not the easiest place to get too until you've been there once or twice. You gotta make sure you get the right road off 924 and follow it long enough to get to the campground. Here's a map giving a general idea of how it's off the beaten path a bit.

We got lost looking for it the first few times and it's a little more difficult if you're driving it at night, which we were. And in all honesty, I look at that map and it still doesn't mean anything to me, even though in my head I can see the route very clearly. But don't let that scare you from camping - I'm assuming this is why we'll exchange cell numbers and those of us who know where the campground is can go out on expeditions to get those who don't know where it is.
If we have a decent size group coming that are going to camp, it may be a good idea to call up there and get a spot because I don't know how busy the park will be that day and our usual spots may not have enough room for everyone.
For those wanting to hotel it, visit Paragon's website at: www.paragonap.com (http://www.paragonap.com). They have lodging information on there. Also, if this will be your first trip to the park, make sure you read the Park Guidelines section under the Explore menu and the Self Guided Trail Rides under the Adventures menu. This will give you a good idea of what the basics are that you need in the park. The orange flags are $3 and it's $35 a day for the driver in the park (passengers are $5 a day).
Other than that, there's not much else to know. It'll be cool if a lot of people can camp because that's always fun. :toothless If not, the weekend will still be fun! Can't wait!
Aikidoka 04-29-2004, 03:25 PM Okay, so here's the deal, just to catch everybody up. The trip to Paragon is for the weekend of June 12th-13th (month and a half! :chili: )
:cry
bnkrtstk 04-29-2004, 03:55 PM I don't mind waiting if I'm early, but I hate waiting for those who are late. :goodfinge
We should book early, there is a race at Pocono on 6/13 .
TCRIMSONK 04-29-2004, 04:09 PM Okay, I'm camping. Who is making this list, so we know how much space to reserve?
Kallure 04-29-2004, 04:28 PM I'll make the list and call. In that case, I'd say let me know about camping by say, next Friday or so (May 7th) simply because there is a race at Pocono that weekend.
Even if you're still up in the air about coming, let us know if you're camping. It's better to have more space and some people not show up than assume to small of a number and not have enough space booked.
TCRIMSONK 04-29-2004, 05:09 PM well then I will also PM you my cell number and email addy. Thanks.
