View Full Version : May meet in Western MD
Aikidoka 03-19-2004, 02:27 PM A couple guys I know want to take their trucks out. One is a 2WD Ranger so that could get interesting. We are going to hit up one trail in Western MD I know of and see what the other ones around there are like. The trails are legal and are advertised on Maryland's DNR website. I'm going to try and get GPS waypoints for them while out there if I have the equipment.
Anyways I want to try for the weekend of May 8th. We'll probably go out Friday evening and camp. Then trail ride, camp again, and trail ride. There's a nice little campground up there in one of the parks with hot showers and bathrooms. Of course there's the whole, public display of alcohol thing since it's a state park campground, but my friends and I have never had any trouble since we don't make a big ruckus.

Can soembody sticky this? :rockon
bnkrtstk 03-19-2004, 04:00 PM Sounds promising, pencil me in for a maybe it's Mother's Day weekend.
TCRIMSONK 03-20-2004, 01:38 AM sounds good. be sure and keep this thread alive as more specific plans develop.
What park are you planning on going to? If you're just looking for stockish 4x4 trails, then you may want to meet me in Frederick some time. I can show you the watershed. It's espeically good if there's snow on the ground, but it makes for a fun drive any time of the year. It is also legal, unless you go off of the marked trails, which is when things get even more interesting.
Kurt Rohmer 04-05-2004, 01:41 AM May 8th...hmmm sounds promising! Lets see if uncle sam gives me a rebate check!
Aikidoka 04-05-2004, 12:52 PM The guys I know seem to be down for the weekend of the 8th. I am probably going up that Friday afternoon. I'll be staying at the New Germany campground. I'm too poor to make reservations right now. A friend with a Hummer also wants to come. I'm interested in tring out the watershed, but I'm having trouble getting my carb tuned and I need to work my ass off to get more pay in these next few weeks. :cry
TCRIMSONK 04-05-2004, 03:25 PM I'm for the 8th.
Aikidoka 04-05-2004, 04:54 PM I'm for the 8th.
You thinking of just doing a Sat day trip, or should we find a spot for you in one of the campsites?
/==0=\ 04-05-2004, 09:26 PM sounds good to me, if all goes to plan. If I run into a snag however I might be doing my SAS that weekend as I am tenetively planning it for the weekend before that. Hopefully I'll be able to show up and show off how good 153" of ford truck wheelbase can flex out. If somebody needs to borrow a set of tires for the weekend I'm willing to loan out my 33" Dunlop bud rovers on stock 15x8 wheels for a small security deposit.
TCRIMSONK 04-05-2004, 11:28 PM I can be in for camping. How soon do you want to know for sure?
My friend's Grand Cherokee's T-Case just spontaniously disasembled itsself, and threw up fluid and chunks of aluminum casing all over the road, so if we can get that replaced in time, I think he would be in too.
What day did you plan on heading back? Sunday?
Thanks.
-TCK
Aikidoka 04-06-2004, 10:56 AM Yeah, we'd be done on Sunday. That sounds cool about the 33"s, but I think they'd rub on my non lifted Bronco. I'm probably going to make reservations for my site in a couple of weeks. There should be room. It's 6 to a site. We might be seven strong then but it should not be a problem. It's supposed to be two vehicles to a site, but there is a very big driveway on this site.
TCRIMSONK 04-06-2004, 11:25 AM very cool. FYI, 33's DO NOT rub on my '90 Bronco, and it's not lifted. I'm not 100% sure about the previous body style, but I think you can run 33's, while you're otherwise stock.

Hmmm, this might be a chance to try them out.... :deal
/==0=\ 04-06-2004, 09:41 PM My last chance to really beat on my rig before it goes into the paint booth, I'll try my best to be there. What age of people are we dealing with here? Don't want to sorry punk kids ruining my weekend!
FYI I'm 18
Aikidoka 04-07-2004, 03:47 PM The other group has an older adult, 23 year old, 17 year old, and then a couple of late teens. They'll have their own site. I myself am 25.
TCRIMSONK 04-07-2004, 04:34 PM So does this mean we have one have one campsite with alcohol, and one without?
Aikidoka 04-07-2004, 04:53 PM It means we'll claim to not know them if they have any alcohol trouble. Their older adult and the 23 year old can take responsibility for buying them whatever.
TCRIMSONK 04-07-2004, 05:58 PM :D sounds like a good plan. I may be bringing along my own 18yo little wheeler.

What you old farts arent gonna drink? :shrug
Aikidoka 04-08-2004, 11:06 AM No comment....
Aikidoka 04-13-2004, 04:40 PM Ok, I have one site reserved. I have two friends coming and might bring somebody myself. Technically there are two spaces left for the site then, but we could probably sneak a third on. Here is a link to the park website. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/newgermany.html I'm going to let the other guy know so he can get a site for his young crew. I have site 39. It will be $7 for camping if you are squeezing in on my site.
TCRIMSONK 04-13-2004, 06:01 PM So have you been there before?
TCRIMSONK 04-13-2004, 06:21 PM I don't understand... http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/orv.html lists all of MD park's ORV trails. Why are we staying in New Germany State Park when there are trails in nearby Green Ridge State Forest and Savage River State Forest?
Are there trails in New Germany that just aren't listed on the web?
TCRIMSONK 04-13-2004, 06:24 PM also,
"ORV's used in Maryland must be registered with the Department of Natural Resources State Forest and Park Service. "
Aikidoka 04-13-2004, 07:42 PM So have you been there before?
Yes.

I like the sites there and if for some strange reason we get all muddied up we have access to showers. It's also 5min from one of the trail enterances.
TCRIMSONK 04-13-2004, 07:46 PM Okay, as long as you know that there will be trails there for us, that's good enough for me. Are there going to be any interesting trails avaliable, for those of us who aren't driving 2wd rangers? I haven't been on any of the ORV trails yet, and I don't know what to expect from them.
Aikidoka 04-13-2004, 07:47 PM also,
"ORV's used in Maryland must be registered with the Department of Natural Resources State Forest and Park Service. "
Most of the trails show up on a detailed map as an unimproved road. Therefore any registered motor vehicle should be allowed.
TCRIMSONK 04-13-2004, 07:49 PM Cool. I also emailed the cumberland DNR rep on their website to ask what we needed, just in case.
If nothing else, we would get a cool sticker :toothless

I know that a 2WD can make it on the one I have done before. I want to see the others. I know in the winter that no 2WD can make them. There are a few mud ruts in various spots.
TCRIMSONK 04-14-2004, 12:47 AM Okay, so far it sounds a lot like the Frederick Watershed. I'm still up for the trip though, but you may want to check out the watershed, just so you can have someplace closer to visit.
Kurt Rohmer 04-14-2004, 01:37 AM I'm out..no wheeling at DNR... saving my pennies for Paragon.
TCRIMSONK 04-14-2004, 01:07 PM The cost of an ORV permit is $15.00 for a calendar year. The information you need is the make, model, year and vehicle identification number. You can purchase these through the mail - I can fax or mail you the applications. You can also purchase these at State Forest and Parks during normal business hours. At the present time, I wouldn't go to a State Park or Forest expecting to purchase one, before calling to check on their hours of operation and days they are open. When you ride on a state trail, you must have your vehicle registered. You can only purchase these permits at DNR/Licensing and Registration Service Center Offices or the following locations in Garrett County: Savage River Complex/New Germany State Park and Deep Creek Lake State Park. If you need addresses or phone numbers for any of them, please leave me know. Also, since you are coming from the East, Green Ridge State Forest in Allegany County also has ORV trails - they are the most popular - and they have more miles than the ones in Garrett County. You can purchase ORV permits at Green Ridge State Forest or Rocky Gap State Park (10 miles East of Green Ridge) also during normal business hours - but they are shorten because of funds and seasonal employees not being hired yet.
Aikidoka 04-14-2004, 01:57 PM What is your job schedule like? We could hit the Green Ridge Trail Friday. I don't know if the other guys are going up early or Friday night. PM me the info on getting the stickers.
TCRIMSONK 04-14-2004, 05:05 PM I work 10 to 6 monday to friday. Except in may, when I work saturdays instead of mondays.
My work schedule is sort of a mess right now though, because they are looking into hireing hourlys to cover for us full time people on Saturdays. If they do this in time, then I can take off either friday or monday, and spend saturday and sunday "out west"
So really, it's hard to say what my job schedule will be next month.
Aikidoka 04-29-2004, 04:27 PM You have a CB? If so let's decide on a channel to us to help us meet up.
TCRIMSONK 04-29-2004, 04:28 PM 33, it's become an FSB standard.
Aikidoka 04-29-2004, 04:34 PM Gotcha. What are you sitting at your computer while supposedly working also?
TCRIMSONK 04-29-2004, 05:07 PM Yeah, pretty much. I do tech support. A lot of it I can do by remote. Otherwise, I spend a lot of time waiting for the phone to ring.
TCRIMSONK 04-29-2004, 05:45 PM So anyway, it's just about a week away. How many people, and how many "OHVs" do we have going? I will be there, and I'm trying to convince a friend of mine to go to, but don't count him in yet.
Aikidoka 04-29-2004, 06:13 PM Well there should be a couple coming with a hummer. The girl doesn't want to bring her Xterra. Then there's the group of 5 or 6. There will be a F-250, maybe Bronco II, and a 2WD Ranger :shrug . I'll be there with my Bronco. I'm going out soon today to see if it is still spraying gas when I start it. :duh
TCRIMSONK 05-04-2004, 04:12 PM as of now, I'm still going to be headed up on Saturday afternoon. I'm just having some trouble finding a passenger/spotter. Espeically if I'm staying through Monday.
Aikiodka, any chance you can stay for Monday too?
Aikidoka 05-05-2004, 01:30 PM Do you still want to try out Green Ridge on Friday? My hours are kind of skimpy right now, but I probably can manage staying until about 2 on Monday. The Hummer people has to bail. Why the guy couldn't seem to remember it's Mother's Day and his mom's birthday I don't know. His girlfriend informed me. I am passengerless also. Actually looks like you'll be the only person on my site.

TCRIMSONK 05-05-2004, 01:44 PM Green Ridge on Friday? I dont remember talking about that. I have to work friday til 6, and then saturday from 730 to 330. That barely gives me enough time to pack up Friday night so I can leave streight from work on Saturday.
Jump on AIM some time, and we can figure this all out.
Aikidoka 05-17-2004, 06:59 PM Here is the write up of the trip.
