View Full Version : Hummer Dual Beadlocks w/Mag Runflat Installation (w/pics)

The following is the way i installed my tires on my hummer dual beadlocks wheels. At no point will i claim that this is the right way to do it or that it is the only way. The reason i state this is because i have read about many different ways to install them.. Onto the stuff:

First some information on the Hummer Dual Beadlocks. This is a 2 piece wheel with a 2 piece inner beadlock.. The inner beadlock can double as a runflat device, either magnesium or rubber. The magnesium comes with the 8 bolt bias ply wheels and the rubber comes with the 12 bolt radial wheels. I have read that you can interchange them without a problem. You can also purchase a set that doesnt have the runflat made from pvc or you can even remove the runflat portion of the mag runflat. The beadlock is put together inside the tire then the tire is placed over the bottom half of the wheel. You place the top half of the wheel on and tighten id down. What it does is sandwich the bead of the tire between the walls of the wheel and the inner beadlock. This clamps down both beads effectively.. Onto the pictures and descriptions.. (Once again, this is not the only way to do this, just the way i did it)

First thing i did was figure out what i was going to use to balance these huge 42" tires. I read that golf balls worked well with the hummer beadlocks so thats what i went with. Carl (MORS) dropped off way more than enough for me to use. I put 10 of them in there. I read that 8 would do the trick so i figured 2 more could hurt...
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1078.JPG

Just toss them in.
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1079.JPG

Here are the 2 pieces of the runflat/beadlock. They go together with some special bolts.
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1081.JPG

Put both of them inside the tire seperately and then bolt them together while inside the tire.
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1083.JPG

Once that is done get your 2 piece wheel and rubber o-ring ready.
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1084.JPG

This is the bottom half of the rim with the o-ring installed. Make sure it is all the way at the bottom. I was told i could use silicone to keep it down. This would work well if you plan on using an impact gun. The vibration can cause the o-ring to move up and this will creat a bad seal..
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1085.JPG

What i did was place the wheel over a small stool but you can also use a bucket or anything that will allow the tire itself to hang over the sides. I did this so that the bottom of the wheel will center itself right. Place the tire over the wheel and adjust the inner beadlock so that it is sitting right and centered. Make sure to check the o-ring again in case it moved.
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1086.JPG

The outer wheel came with a long valve stem which could be easily ripped off.. My friend Carl (MORS) hooked me up with some short ones which i installed.
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1087.JPG
new one
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1088.JPG

Place the upper part of the wheel over the studs making sure they are centered. I used 2 c-clamps to give me enough thread so that i could get the nuts started.
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1089.JPG

Start turning them by hand or with an impact gun or air socket.. I didnt want to use any air tools so that i wouldnt mess up the seal. I did use an air ratchet but only as a regular ratchet.. Closest thing to me.
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1090.JPG

This is the pattern i used and it worked real well. It made the job a whole lot easier. Using a torque wrench tighten them down in this order up to 85 lbs.
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/numbers.jpg

After that go down to 125 lbs with the torque wrench making sure to follow the order above. Once you reach number 8 start over until each nut is consistantly at 125 lbs..
http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/old4dbpics/DSCF1091.JPG

Thats it.. air up your tire and mount that sucker on. If it leaks air then you most likely messed up.. Take it off and do it again.

Bronkzilla........You go BOOOOIEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! Bad ass wheels man. Wish I had half the rig and $$$ you do to build my bronco up like that. Too bad they are only for 8 or 12 lug, I think that's correct. Wouldn't mind having a set just for looks with my 6" lift and 33's or 35's.   And of course when offroading....

1. I got mine from www.usa6x6sucks.com.. Took way too long to get them so if you are in a hurry then you might want to look around.

2. I got mine for 165 each which included shipping. Thats with the runflats.

3. From what ive read its any bolt pattern and any backspacing.

Will do.. Im still working on the rest of the truck so it might be a month before i get to test them out..

By the way.. I still have 3 more of these to mount up.. ITs very tiring.. Especially when avoiding the use of air tools..

did you send in rims? or did you buy them whole?

lol, just a side note... they say DOT T, its stamped right on them. right across from the MILITARY USE ONLY stamp. max load 2850. one thing i would suggest is to get a rock ring. there is a guy on pirate that sells re-bar ones already formed in a ring, just trim to fit and weld in. for $6 each, thats the way i went. he does sell some nice 3/8" laser cut ones too, but $50 each was too much for me. that takes bargain rims into the custom price range.

oh and despite the 6x6 rep, i am going to use his new pressed centers on my rims

The golf balls are to balance the wheel/tires for street driving?

What is the differnece between the two besides the material? There both doing the same thing, right? So what makes the PVC able to allow the tire to flex around obsticles and not the mags??

The pvc is just a ring, close to the same diameter as the wheel itself, used to "lock" both sides of the tire. The run flat is a bigger ring, see the pics on page one. the mag run flat keeps the vehicle from running on the rim.

Some one please help me out. i am still learning too. :thumbup

Yeah, bent 2 of mine slightly on the first real rocks I hit. :banghead Fixed em up with some 1/2 inch bar. Hopefully they just don't peel right over the bar.

i was going to go get a few sticks of cold rolled, but for $6 each they come preformed & they look like thick re-bar. i wonder about the inside rim edge. OX, you ever have any issues with the other side of the rim?

Nope, not yet. It does seem like the outside lip sticks out farther than other rims, but I never really looked @ the inside lip much. I've only been on maybe 3 hard trails since I got the mogs and hummers, so I got plenty of time yet to trash the inners :brownbag

just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. Here in Iraq, we've busted a lot of tires, mostly due to IEDs. The 8 bolt wheels are for bias tires, 12 bolt for radials, I honestly don't know if there is any difference. (and I'm talking humvee apps). We don't worry about balancing. Most of our trucks are beat to hell, and we are running over so much stuff, and the roads suck, so it really doesn't matter. I'd be interested to know how the golf balls work. May try some beadlocks on the Bronco when I get home when I do the D 60 swap. The old metal runflat was the shit, we don't get them any more, just the rubber ones. As I'm sure you figured out, they are a beast to mount with that damn rubber runflat. Big sledge hammer and big tire spoon help. After you've done 6 or so it's not so bad. Every now and then we are blessed with some mounted tires, most of ours we mount ourselves. Tires here are usually ruined from damage or improper alignment, we usually just cut the sidewall out to dismount them (a bayonet works well). Good luck, looks good!

the set of hummer rims i bought had them stick on wheel weights on them. like a 4x6 patch of them, possibly bigger. they had the magnesium run flats. i would love to cut the run flat off and keep the beadlock ring

Hey Zilla, do you have a diagram of the bumper, or is it all in your head? I saw one like it yesterday, but it was like $475 without shipping. I figure I cn do it for a little less, just wondering if you had a diagrm or specs for it. Thanks.

the one on my bronco was made by customcreations in gardena which no longer exists.. i didnt have a bender or welder at the time.. here are some pictures i took for someone a while back.. http://www.bronkzilla.com/images/zillarunner/

i made one for a friend last year.. it came out to around 50 dollars in material.. might be more now since steel has gone up.. pictures here.. http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9540

no dimensions or plans.. the original was made from a sketch and the 2nd one i just made to my friends specs.. it was going on a big bronco and he wanted the lights under the top bar..

ok i know this is an old post and raf you sold your bronco didn't you? anyway in post #40 you have two pics of your truck with the wheels without the tires on them. anyway there are 2 different wheels in those 2 pictures. the first one is just a cut steel center and the second is a pressed steel. did you get the second set from USA6x6 as well? i have been reaserching this but stopped because i found out i thought i couldn't afford it. well i found a set of one tons cheep and i'm looking at these dual beadlocks again but i can't remember the backspacing i settled on. do you remember what you ordered? i thought 3 inch backspacing was right but i can't remember.
