View Full Version : Interior Lighting
Blaze 04-26-2003, 10:10 PM I recently bought an interior light on e-bay for a '00-'03 superduty on a tip from blueoval78, and damn is it smooth looking. It swapped right in with no alterations and is much sleaker and brighter than the factory one.
It was purchased from dick's auto. I sent him an e-mail and told him he should offer everyone on this site a flat rate for purchase and shipping, that he could prolly get a few sales that way. It's way cool. For pictures see the "new pics, lift, visor lights, and interior lights" post under "General chit-chat" I highly recomend. :thumbup
Broncobob 04-27-2003, 12:17 AM I did the same thing as you blaze, got it from dicks at ebay. 13 bucks shipped, 15 maybe. Anyways, the installation is very time consuming and takes alot of fabrication, luckily, I wrote down the steps I took for everyone to follow.
1: Unscrew old light
2: Scew new light in
Damn it was tough, but the added light is incredible compaired to the stock one. Also looks like it was meant to be, not that stupid chrome one that doesn't flow with the interior pannels, not to mention emits orange/yellowish light.
Anyways, as a tip, he was offering on e-bay that they were tan dome lights....when I sent the money I requested if he could find me a gray one to match my gray interior, sure enough a gray one came in the mail. Great guys to bid for.
Blaze 04-27-2003, 10:55 AM Yea it does flow well. Looks very smooth. When I got mine I actualy bid on a gray one, but I've seen the tan ones listed so we know he has at least two colors :shrug Anyway you can't beat it for an inexpinsive, easy, and very practical mod. :thumbup

Broncobob 04-28-2003, 01:50 AM http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33701&item=2413121998
This is the Dick's auto parts guy. The link here is for a black one, you might want to e-mail him and ask for different colors if you don't want black. Also, next to his name, click view other items, and it takes you to everything he has on ebay. He usually has 2 or 3 auctions for the dome lights at one time, but this is the only one I could find currently.
6 Day's left, and don't you all go outbid yourselves....
Crazed 04-28-2003, 05:01 AM Cool...I just clicked buy it now... should be on the way soon.
jermil01 04-28-2003, 10:07 AM Sweet, I like that a lot, much better than my pitted out chrome one. Definitely looks like it would be worth the investment.
plug ugly 04-28-2003, 10:59 AM is that the light that is right near the trim on the shell or up front between the visors? ( i think it is the former, in which case it would work for me too)
Dustin 04-28-2003, 01:38 PM its right by the trim for the shell

Crazed 05-09-2003, 01:44 PM Buy some interior paint.
Crazed 05-09-2003, 01:46 PM Anyone...Will that style work on the 80-86's? Without too much redo
It looks like the same hookups for the standard light so I will say yes.
We also need to run a hot wire up there to make the map lights work.
jermil01 05-09-2003, 03:20 PM Buy some interior paint.
Good idea!!
Crazed 05-09-2003, 03:23 PM I painted my console lid, it used to be tan.
Crazed 05-09-2003, 03:24 PM OOps forgot the pic...

jermil01 05-09-2003, 03:26 PM Good save crazed, you did a good job on that, how'd you apply the paint?
Swamp Donkey 05-09-2003, 03:27 PM My pic above is in my 86, just wired right up.
You can find these in junkyards. There are plenty of 97+ F-trucks. I think I paid $10
Crazed 05-09-2003, 03:31 PM It was a rattle can, Plasti-kote vinyl color
jermil01 05-09-2003, 03:38 PM It was a rattle can, Plasti-kote vinyl color
Cool, when I get my dome light, maybe I'll be able to find some plasti kote in blue to match.
Crazed 05-10-2003, 11:17 PM I got the Map lights to work....
put power to this point...
http://www.superford.org/registry/vehicles/users/2721/1725/5-10-03_011.jpg
Now they work!!
http://www.superford.org/registry/vehicles/users/2721/1725/5-10-03_022.jpg
blueoval78 05-10-2003, 11:24 PM anyone notice that it kind of site croaked, i tried to fix mine, but it looks like it will awlawys have a bit of a gap, atleats until i redo my headliner with some thinker fabric
jermil01 05-23-2003, 10:24 AM Help, attempted to wire my new dome light last night, but evidently my electrical skills were not up to the task..After several blown fuses I finally figured out which wires not to put together, unfortunately when I did get it wired to where the dome light worked and the map lights came on, the dome light would come on when the door was closed and go off when the door was open :damn: :damn: :damn: ..Something must have been reversed right, only I can't figure out what?? So its 12:00 at night before I decided to call it quits and leave the two wires hanging from the open hold in my headliner..The dome light I bought was from a 2002 F150, it came with the plug, pictured below. The plug has three wires, the green with the stripe, the solid black and the black with the stripe..The stock dome light wired up with only two wires..The green with the stripe and the black with the stripe..What goes where, what did I do wrong, please help??!!??

http://www.superford.org/registry/vehicles/users/4765/2896/wiring.jpg
Crazed 05-23-2003, 01:19 PM I only put power to the one point above, and the power for the dome light came from the rear screw like it was stock.
jermil01 05-23-2003, 01:28 PM I cut both of the wires from the stock set up and just wired them directly instead of screwing it in..did the red wire in your pic go to the green wire?
Crazed 05-23-2003, 04:57 PM Red wire in my pic went all the way to hot power...that one does the Map lights.
jermil01 05-23-2003, 05:03 PM Now I'm completely confused..I don't believe I saw any red wires up there..
1982bronco 05-23-2003, 06:37 PM i think Crazed put the red wire there. for the domelights.
Dustin 05-23-2003, 10:17 PM the colors of the wires may change do to the year of the vehicle. you need to get a test light and test the wire to see if its power or not.
Crazed 05-26-2003, 08:14 PM Yes..I ran the red wire from a full time power point so the maplights will work any time.
Dustin 05-30-2003, 11:55 PM ok people that dont know how to install a dome light
I had to order mine and it finally came in today so I got it installed. If anyone needs the part number I can get that. It cant be easier, just unbolt the old and bolt in the new and everything works like a charm.
blurry pic but leave thosewire connetors where they are since they will work with the new one. both those wires have power, one is for the dome light and the other for the map lights and the 3rd bolt grounds everything through the body
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/172901/fullsize/domelight2.JPG
ok I lied, you have to cut a little and swap a little plastic peice so this may get tricky. see that little dirty yellow platic dohicky? swap that from the old light to the new. ok so your wondering how to get the light to sit level? just cut that little tit off just to the right of that little plastic bracket you just swaped over. cut a little more than is shown in the picture since I wasent done when I took that.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/172900/fullsize/domelight.JPG
all done! sits level and matches nicely. It accually matches better in person than in that picture
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/172902/fullsize/domelight3.JPG
plug ugly 05-31-2003, 12:13 AM part #? How much and where did you get yours?
Dustin 05-31-2003, 12:32 AM light- F8DZ-13776-AAA
lens- F4DZ-13783-A
ran me about 28 bucks or so from work....I got sick of looking on ebay for the right color plus I got it cheaper anyway
blueoval78 05-31-2003, 10:53 AM ill have to cut my tit off so it looks level too, thanks for that tit, i mean tip
plug ugly 05-31-2003, 12:58 PM yeah, I think Ford only wants like 28 bucks too. I was asking them the oher day and i think thats what they said. Looks good, is there eally much better light to be had?
blueoval78 05-31-2003, 08:16 PM like day and night, literally
Dustin 05-31-2003, 09:56 PM well your getting a deal then damon....they list for well over 28 bucks. and yeah they are worth the money I think, big difference in light and look better too.
Crazed 06-01-2003, 02:37 AM My truck only had the one wire running to the mount, so I had to run another to do the map lights.
jermil01 06-02-2003, 09:31 AM Thanks for the pics Dustin, finally got mine wired correctly..will post pics tomorrow..The tan light with the blue interior looks pretty good..As it turns out, I was not properly grounding the light, thus my blown fuses..It works great now, the difference in lighting is unbelievable.
irwin 12-07-2003, 07:10 AM the late model mustangs have the same light correct???????????? :shrug :iiss
Bobby 12-07-2003, 10:14 AM Looks like its time to do yet another mod to the bronco. The light came out really nice. I can't wait to start on mine. :chili: :chili: :chili: :chili:
Steve83 12-11-2003, 01:06 AM Geez - $28 ?!?!?!?!
I have a few of those in my junkpile and I only want $10 for a black one.
http://www.superford.org/getfile.php?id=71709&toggle=fullsize&f=InteriorLamps.jpg
Blaze 12-11-2003, 03:38 AM the late model mustangs have the same light correct???????????? :shrug :iiss
Yes, but steve has some good junk as stated above if ya wanna forgo the search. :shrug
Dustin 12-11-2003, 10:32 AM yup you have to buy the housing then the lense. my cost was under 28 I think, but at least I got the color I wanted.
Blaze 12-12-2003, 06:23 AM What all colors do they come in from Ford? I've only seen black, gray and maybe tan?? :shrug
jermil01 12-12-2003, 09:34 AM I used the tan one, it looks fine with my blue interior.
plug ugly 01-13-2005, 11:32 PM finally got around to doing this mod, and its worth the 20 bucks or so i paid on fleabay. The only thing is, I had to reuse the stock bronco bolts as the were longer than the 250 ones, and the spots have to go forward for proper operation of the lights. i guess you could change location of the power wires in the roof. The green is always hot, and the black is door open hot. No actually, that wouldnt work cause then the dome light would always be on. i dont know, maybe someone smarter than me can figure it out that feels like tearing the light apart or something.
Anwyas, lots more lighting, now if I could only figure out why the one front spot light wont come on (and no, its not the bulb)
brokebronco 01-15-2005, 12:17 PM I installed the same lights into my 84 Bronco, 86 F250 and my buddy's 88 Bronco.
Crazed, you should already have the wiring in place. The problem usually is corroded connectorsby the seatbelt retractor on the drivers side.
These lights are great in a Bronco, the only problem in the pickup is the slope of the roof. It makes the map lights shine on the hood. No biggy, the dome light works nicely for reading maps.
Chris
Sixlitre 01-15-2005, 12:55 PM The problem usually is corroded connectorsby the seatbelt retractor on the drivers side.
Chris
It can also be under the driver's kick panel where the 4 wire plug connects the dome harness to the main harness;
http://www.superford.org/getfile/161386/fullsize/IMG_0200.JPG (http://www.superford.org/registry/vehicles/showmedia.php?id=161386&original=1)
When that lime green one rots off you have no map lights or non-ignition cargo light. If the black w/blue tracer (above it) goes then you have no dome.
These fixed connectors in the ceiling can crack too causing no connection;
http://www.superford.org/getfile/158698/fullsize/IMG_0056.JPG (http://www.superford.org/registry/vehicles/showmedia.php?id=158698&original=1)
But when everything's working and that newer dome light goes in it's a whole lot brighter in there alright
Sixlitre
Has anyone tried this on a 78-79. I would love to have more light inside.
