View Full Version : Pics of HOOD Mounted Daylighters...opinions?
Kurt Rohmer 04-09-2004, 03:24 AM Pics of my hood mounted KC Daylighters... saw a rail style dune buggy sporting a similar placement of lights... I knew I had to try it out on the Bronco... At first, even I thought it looked kinda stupid! but a couple of days later the look is growing on me. Reminds me of an old Duesenberg roadster, or even an early firetruck. And believe me these suckers are Bright! and sitting right behind the lens pattern makes it even brighter! They work awesome, and the mounting took only 2 hours. And no... no obstruction of view
Lots of weird looks and a couple of thumbs up from passers-by. what do you think? (check in my "redoing" folder for the pics)
srhanson 04-09-2004, 11:00 AM Personally, and don't take this as a slam to your tastes and truck, but I think it's ugly. Never have liked that look as I have seen it on a few trucks in Cali who thought they were "real" baja trucks.
MyFullSize 04-09-2004, 02:46 PM Please, no offense intended sir, but... :uke:
94 XLT BRONCO 04-09-2004, 02:51 PM again, no offense but I don't like it. Is that even Legal????
Leonard 04-09-2004, 03:22 PM as long as it doesn't obstuct the veiw its legal, at least here in pa. as far as looks i can dig it only if they were out farther like at the corners of the hood by the fender more in line with the A-pillar. :drinkbud
Kurt Rohmer 04-09-2004, 08:42 PM They will prolly get moved over to the outside and back of the hood area. Problem is, I had to drill holes in the hood (hood was already messed up so I didn't mind) and the only place where it was thin enough was at those points. ( the KC daylighters attachment bolt isn't long enough to reach through the support metal on the underside of the hood ) hence the kinda central placement. So yeah... next week, I'll be doin some cuttin to bring the lights as far back and as far over to the rear corners as possible.
Thanx for bein honest boys, I 'preciate it. Hey...they maybe ugly as sin, but they effin work like saints!
as for the holes I already made... hmmm maybe some more runnin lights?
CAN YOU SAY FUGLY XMAS TREE? Hahahahaha
Kurt Rohmer 04-09-2004, 09:02 PM BTW... I knew that 99% of you guys would hate it, and believe me, not only do I NOT mind a few flames, I figure I could get a few good jokes out of it, so fire away.
Nothing risked nothing gained, and more than a few good ideas have come from HORRIBLE truck mods! I knew a guy built an 18 inch lift kit... couldn't get up into his own truck without a step stool!! HA
As to why I didn't chose a gutter mount over the cab... A buddy of mine has like 6 Dick Cepek Baja Lazers, and when he turns 'em on, too much bleed over into the cab, it's like frickin daylight inside AND outside.
and as for front bumper mounts....BORING!!! I wanted to try something new.. oh well.
Canadian Bronco 04-09-2004, 09:58 PM A buddy of mine has like 6 Dick Cepek Baja Lazers, and when he turns 'em on, too much bleed over into the cab, it's like frickin daylight inside AND outside..
sounds like mine but i love the daylight look, with a white hood it was really bad but now silver and good 2 go :thumbup diriving on highway with my rectangle bumper lights 5 6" rounds up top and h4's in the grill was fooking sweet, just like day time :toothless
gearrat 04-09-2004, 10:12 PM well it looks ok but i would have moved them out a little more out toward the fenders
Accessory Man 04-10-2004, 12:16 AM Looks aside becuase evryone has there own tastes..........
1) Glare from the hood would annoy me tremendously
2) Would not Pass Inspection in Pa, as Leonard said, anything obstrucing the view, and trust me the State police would consider that and obstruction becuase it lies in the area that the wipers sweep on the windsheild area.
Aside from that, if you like it, then Cool :thumbup
Kurt Rohmer 04-16-2004, 03:06 AM I found a couple of other rigs with hood/sash mounted lights... at least I'm not alone!!!Just bought new drill bits, gonna move them out this weekend. looking to put other style (low profile) lights in the holes provided :)
peace and thanks for the flames... no jokes yet... bummer!
Aikidoka 04-16-2004, 10:52 AM Whoa, nice friend Angela in the pic there. Oh wait, you asked about the lights. I think dual teardrop spots would be neat. Then you can adjust them also. Of course they would probably get whacked more on the trails.
jackhart 04-16-2004, 12:30 PM i give ya credit for trying something new. i think i need to see them mounted in the new locations before i comment further.
Aikidoka 04-29-2004, 10:56 AM Got those things moved yet?
Kurt Rohmer 04-29-2004, 11:23 PM Nope, spent the last couple of Wednesdays (my day off) putting in a new air filter (air hogs) changing the oil, mounting tow points, filling fluids in ALL of the drivetrain parts (big time PIA), and planning out how I am going to route an air tube to the OUTSIDE of the truck, using the stock airbox plenum. <---lots of wasted plans there!!!
They are definitely getting moved, just a matter of getting to do the work. check in next wednesday may4th for pix!!!
Aikidoka 04-29-2004, 11:58 PM But that's a whole 6 days! :cry Are you required to have them covered when driving on the road?
Kurt Rohmer 05-01-2004, 02:33 AM by law, yes, but the local cops could care less.... State Troopers are different tho' so yeah... I keep the covers on.
TCRIMSONK 05-01-2004, 10:32 AM But that's a whole 6 days! :cry Are you required to have them covered when driving on the road?
FYI, I have had my roof lights for several months now and never put covers on them. Hasn't been a problem yet. Might be because of the plastic grilles on the lenses. not sure.
5.0-BRONCO 05-01-2004, 07:53 PM i got 2 mounted on my front bumper. i have only had em mounted their for a weak. i havnt been pulled over. Why do u gotta keep em cover?
TCRIMSONK 05-02-2004, 01:27 AM I think it's a state law about the height, brightness, angle, color, and visibility of filiment of the bulb. really depends on where you live.
Kurt Rohmer 05-02-2004, 01:52 AM yeah, all of the above applies. the two daylighters on the bumper are the old 150K candle power jobs... not too bright, The two on the hood are the newer sealed 285k candle power units...very bright.
Most local police departments could care less, as long as you don't have 'em on. If you have them on, they will only bust your chops if you blind them as you drive by. So in town, uncovered and unlit is okay.
Up on the highway.... different story... connecticut state troopers are notorious sticklers for m.v. law. .... technically, even having those bad boys mounted on the hood is a big no no (vision impairment) but they won't pull you over for it, they will only add that charge to a primary charge. such as speeding. then they get ya for anything else they can find on your ride.
5.0-BRONCO 05-02-2004, 05:32 PM i am pretty sure daylighters are for offroad use only, but correct me if i am wrong, i have mine positionsed to see whats way ahead of me, so they are mounted straigt ahead, wich would be dirrectly at a car, so i doubt mine are legal, i keep the covers on when i am onroad,
anyone ever notice if u turn them on wit the covers on, they light up and u can drive around wit 2 glowing happy faces.
Kurt Rohmer 05-03-2004, 02:46 AM yes, they are one of the many items on our broncos that are listed as "for off-road use only", do we pay attention to that ? Naaah.... only time we worry is when it's time for vehicle inspection and when we get tickets!!!
5.0-BRONCO 05-03-2004, 04:15 PM that shit pisses me off, that Bmws and Mercedes can have brite as lites, but broncos cant,
u ever see the daylighter lookin lights that are HID, i cant even imagine how brite they are.
do u ever drive wit em on. i wanna figure a way to make em come on when i switch my high's on, but i am still researching how to do that.
Kurt Rohmer 05-04-2004, 01:01 AM daylighters are actually brighter in the Candlepower department, but the HIDs burn at a higher tempurature. most 100w bulbs are in the 4500k to 4700k (kelvin) temp range (standard daylighter), but the new HIDs *high intensity discharge* burn a little hotter (5200k) I think, and because they use exotic gasses in the bulb, and a different kind of filament (tungsten carbide mix I think) they require less watts to acheive a bright beam
Daylighter
100 watt bulb
tungsten filament w/ xenon gas filled bulb
burning at 4500K degrees
= 150,000 candlepower
HID
35 watt bulb
tungsten carbide filament w/ exotic mixture gas under pressure
burns at 5200K degrees
equals about 140,000 candlepower
remember though.... the HID lights emit a different spectrum of visible and near visible light. That is why they have a "violet or blue" tint to them when viewed from the side. This is because the gasses inside the bulb emit a different wavelength of light than a standard bulb, or a bulb that uses xenon gas. they only look really bright, because the scientist have figured out which part of the light spectrum we see best with at night, and created a light to shine in that particular spectrum.
Another thing, my KC sealed beams throw almost half a million in candlepower, and the Baja Lasers by Dick Cepek are also up there in the 500K zone WAAAYYYY Brighter than any HID currently made.
oh, and 5.0 Bronco, it is actually kind of easy to wire your lights (KC's i mean) to come on with your normal lights. All you need is a 12volt line tester (the kind that have a little itty bitty bulb in the pen part that lights up when you find a live wire) and a vampire connector (little blue boxes that have room for two wires to go through, you know... the kind you squeeze shut with plyers)
All you do is find the wire, comming off of the back of your light switch (dash panel dissassembly required) that lights up your line tester when the headlights come on. Vampire that line with the wire that routes to your relay for your KC daylighters. There should be 4 prongs on the bottom of your relay numbered 35, 36, 86, 87 or something like that. 35 is ground, 36 is switched power, 86 direct power and 87 routes to your lights positive terminal. hmmm, gonna have to go and look at my paperwork to be sure.... any who - you should have the directions, Iffin ya don't email me or write back to this board and I'll take some pictures and give you a shot by shot description of what you need to do.
good luck.
5.0-BRONCO 05-04-2004, 08:49 AM what are those conectors called that clamp down on the wire, and draw power off it, i gotta get a wire tester from a friend then it should just be a matter of finding the right wire and running it to the relay.
MY daylighters said 200,000 candle power each, how long ago did u buy yours
i still gotta hook up the relways and shit, i just wired em into my old fog
lights.
DONT BUY 40$ lights, they suck, and will will up with mud.
Kurt Rohmer 05-05-2004, 12:40 AM They are blue and are called VAMPIRE connectors or technically Splicing connectors
ummm the ones on the bumpers are 100k and are about 6 years old, the 285k sealed beams are brand new... or is it 385k ???? gotta check the paperwork.
stangmata 05-05-2004, 10:14 AM I don't care what everyone else thinks...I like the lights!!!! I also like the rock lights you have. Can you take some pics of where you mounted them?
5.0-BRONCO 05-05-2004, 10:40 PM I got the same color truck, and the same lights in the same position as THIS TRUCk (http://www.superford.org/registry/vehicles/showmedia.php?id=101530)
Kurt Rohmer 05-07-2004, 12:03 AM hey stangmata... yeah, I'll be taking so more pics of the rock lights.. even thinking of adding some more lights up front by the tow hooks aiming at the front tires, and thank you for the thumbs up on the KC placement on the hood. next week they should be mounted a little further out towards the windshield wipers. I keep on getting sidetracked by my dad (working on his motor home).
ALL SEASON'S BRONCO 05-11-2004, 12:23 AM Hey can't hurt to try but, you can't win them all. Better luck with the next experiment.
