: F-250 D44 OR D50 TTB??

How can I tell the difference between the 44 TTB, and 50 TTB on an F-250?

A guy has a F-250 he is selling parts off of but I'm not sure if it's a 44 or a 50 TTB.

Is there something in the vin or door tag that will say?

Long axle beams
5 Lug bolt pattern
1 pistion calipers
Coil Spring mount

Short Axle beams
8 Lug bolt pattern
2 pistion calipers
Leaf Spring mount

I beleive they both use the same shafts, but I could be wrong on that.

I thought there was a DANA 44 HD TTB. A D44 8lug front.

I'm not going to use the entire thing. Just the center section, and outer "C's" and knuckles" Do a cut and turn at the same time. Eventually 35spline inners and outers, 1410 joints, including the slip joint.

Some F250's do have a HD TTB dana 44 8lug in them.I had one. The easiest difference to see between the HD 44 and The 50 are the hub size(lock outs) The TTB HD44 will have the smaller hubs like any Dana44. The TTB50 Hubs(lock outs) are the same size as a Dana 60.

Dana 44 hub size 3 1/4" --- 5 or 8 lug TTB or strait axle

Dana 50 and 60 hub size 4 1/4" TTB or Strait axle

The pumpkins are stamped D44 or D50. The D50 does not have a c-clip on the slip yoke. The hubs are different sizes. There are in fact F250's with D44 HD TTB front ends

First two replies are incorrect.

TTB F-250's will either come with a TTB D44HD or a TTB D50. Both are leaf sprung 8 lug axles. As indicated earlier, you can refer to the lockout size. The D44HD uses the same lockout as the D44 and the D50 uses the same lockout as the D60.

I also look at the axle shaft u-joints. The D50 has external c-clips on the u-joint caps whereas the D44HD has the snap rings on the inside.

Dana 50ttb has a big 50 on the houseing. Sorry Smok3y but YES you can use the houseing for the the D50 on the bronco its a direct swap (and a cheap way to get 4:10 gears)
The ttb arms for the 50 wont fit (they are leaf not coil), the Stub shaft does and is an upgrade to the standard D44.

Do a search for the "dana 50 stub shaft swap" and you will get a full wright up.

To clarify:

Older (80-86 I believe) F-250's came with the D44HD. It is in fact a leaf sprung, 8 lug. They use 2 piston calipers and larger wheel bearings and lockouts, comparable to the D60 I'm guessing. After that they went with the D50 in all F-250's.

My question is can I put 3/4 ton axles in my Bronco with my D44HD 3rd member, and stock hubs, or do I have to keep the 1/2 tonner's?

The housings have different pivot points and one is meant for leaf spring mounting and the other is for radius arms.

D44HD and D50 both use the same TTB housings. 1/2 ton D44 uses it's own housing.

D44 and D50 centers are interchangeable. Both use the same spline axles and mounting pattern. D50 has a larger ring gear.

D44HD has small 1.5" spindles. D50 uses a D60 sized spindle and hub.

I don't think the axle shafts from a D50 will fit in a 1/2 ton housing as you can't fit them through the knuckle.
