Need some advice from someone familiar with Ca title regs. I have a Bronco that I got for parts that I decided to put back on road. I am not a CA resident and it won't be titled in CA. I tracked down the VIN and the DMV says it was last registered in 1984, and no one put a non operating registration on it. SO, just to get the title in order to transfer to my home state so they will issue a title, I have to pay back registration fees and transfer fees to the tune of $250+.
Does anyone know if there is a sunset clause or a way around this? I don't want to end up spending almost $350 just to get title and tags...
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thats fawked! In VA, if Im not mistaken, if you fail to renew, it just sits idle. The Bronco I got sat for over a year, maybe 2, but I didnt have to pay any extra for its driveway time.

Good luck!

the CA DMV loves to take your money.. Unless there's some hidden shortcut yer gunna have to give them cash..

I bought an 87 Nissan Pickup 4x4 that had not been registered in 10 years.. I didn't want to deal with the registration issues so I just took the body from my 2WD pickup and slapped it on the 4wd frame. problem solved for me. :)

you can do the same with the bronco. :)

I was always under the impression that if you didn't register your vehicle for so many years, that the DMV "resets" your title and registers it as if it were a new vehicle...

Ive had the same problem with my bronco when i was registering it...My bronco hasnt been registered in more than 7 years and i had to register it...They said after 7 years it erases from the DMV files until you re-register the automobile...So i think someone is slippin on their part...

I checked again and they said I still owed even though 1984 was the last year it was registered....

I will try to find another DMV place and get a different opinion...

I had a 76 f250 that had $1200 in back reg fees. I got the truck for $300
The DMV employee told me that if there is not activity on the VIN or License number for 7 years, to come back and start over by claiming lost title, and to bring in a bill of sale. I did just that 2 months ago....LOL
paid $220 total for new title and sticker.

But 7 years was a damn long time to wait... LOL
