View Full Version : I need a suggestion for a computer
Davids78Bronco 03-01-2003, 02:37 AM Kris and I are talking about getting a new computer, to replace my 4yo dinosaur - still works fine, for an HP, but a slow computer on a fast connection is defeating the purpose
She wants a laptop, I want a desktop. She wants it small and cute, I want it to store alot of information and be able to handle the video editing I want to do....plus it's cheaper than a laptop. She goes on about being able to use it for GPS, mapping software, yada yada....I tell her we can get a used one for that
Since I'll be using the new one more than she will anyway, I've decided we're getting a desktop.....now, do I buy one, or build one? I can buy a good one for 5-700 bucks, but then I have to buy the editing software and other junk anyway. For about 700 bucks, I can build myself a custom one with just what I need - I don't need all that microsoft crap, just for my CAD design programs, and the video editing I'm wanting to do
Building one would also give me an excuse to build a custom case for it too. What would you guys do?
gearrat 03-01-2003, 02:41 AM talk to bio or dhath they shouold be able to help ya get the best of both worlds
Davids78Bronco 03-01-2003, 02:54 AM &^#$*&*(%#$^*& - well this post was pretty much pointless! Kris just decided we're BUYING a computer, and won't let me build one :x
gearrat 03-01-2003, 03:10 AM well dave i sguess she showed you huh
biohazard 03-01-2003, 03:11 AM why buy stock? if you go to compusa ask em to build a white box, or alien ware. you GET what you want, it's built by qualified techs, and it's got a 3 year (no 1 year parts and labor bs) ONSITE built into the price. on average they're the same amount of $$$ and you don't have to deal with pre installed jibberish like the name brand systems charge you for.
pm me a list of what you want and I'll give you a quote number they can process in any store.
Pinkys79 03-02-2003, 05:23 AM We bought a gateway about four years ago with some extra perks in it and it cost us $1600 dang. Never again will I buy a big name computer like this. Even though it has done me well I found out they put an out dated hard drive in it. Its only like 33 speed instead of 66 that was out at the time and I also found out that I could have built my own for about $600 but I guess live and learn. Our next one is coming soon and since I have done some tinkering and alot of collage I am definitly building my own. Right now I am looking at a amd atholon 2400 and the inerds for about $400. Alot better
dsotmoon 03-02-2003, 12:40 PM this is just my opinion but never buy a mass produced computer, I had one built almost 2 years ago, a 1.2GHZ, yes it's old now, but I got everything I wanted in it, DVD, CD-RW, 1GB RAM, the video card I wanted, The mother board I wanted, everything top of the line at the time for the less than what I could've got a pc of sh it from best buy or somewhere, plus the shop that built it has a LIFETIME labor warranty, they'll reformat for free, clean it for free, if i pay for the part to upgrade they put it in for free, my brother on the other had bought a dell a few months ago and has had nothing but problems, they sent him a modem in the mail to replace himself, he barely knows how to turn the thing on, this was after spending 10 or so hours over the course of a week talking to people on the phone who coulnt speak english and knew about as much as he did, I ended up fixing it at my kitchen table

the 2400+ is a great cpu, just runds really hot. just get a lot of ram to back it up for intense gaming. i got a gig, and it is really nice, runns xp mce smooth and no issues.

It runs hot, but not unbarably hot. I've got a 2600+, stock 1.89ghz and I've overclocked it to 2.21ghz with the stock cooler.
amw_drizz 04-24-2006, 01:11 PM ha, i almost fried the damn thing, normal it runs about 40-50*c, the pads on the cpu melted from the heat and i thought they wernt supposed to melt.
it peaked at about 75*c (which is my mobo cut off temp) last night.
