View Full Version : after market tach install
gearrat 03-01-2003, 04:41 PM it was very simple and painless took all of 30 minutes to install.
1) get a fter market tach
2) find a place to mount the tach that you like
3) mount the tach
4) run the wires to the areas to hook up
5) red wire to a power source that is on when the truck is on
6) black wire ground (duh)
7) white wire for the light
8) green wire goes to the neg wire from the coil
a quick disclaimer: wire colors may differ from manufacture to manufacture
1982bronco 03-01-2003, 10:25 PM is it really that easy? i have always wanted one. and now i think im gonna get one. just because its that easy.
gearrat 03-01-2003, 11:30 PM yea it is that easy just read the paper that comes with it, if yoiu have never put one in before but i have put a few in
1982bronco 03-02-2003, 12:14 AM no i never have but i wanna now! does it matter what kind i get? as in brand and eletrical or mechanical?
gearrat 03-02-2003, 12:18 AM depends on how much you want to spend they range from 20 bucks (cheesy) to 120 (autometer) is the most expensive i have seen. i got the sun pro tach and paid 50 for it. mine is electrical four wires so. i have not seen a mech tach in a long time, they are iirc set and read froma magnet i believe, not a 100% sure on it though
Crazed 03-02-2003, 12:19 AM Electric is the one for you to get..A mechanical would require a different distributor
Big Mike C. 03-02-2003, 12:39 AM Check out the new Jegs or Summit...you can spend way, way more than that for one...
Where did you mount yours?
1982bronco 03-02-2003, 01:26 AM well ill probably spend like 20-30 on one if i get one. i dont need the best.
gearrat 03-02-2003, 01:31 AM i mounted mine by the a piller on the dash it is out is out of the way but can be seen out of the corner of my eye. after i get some batteries for the digi i will post a picture for you picture hungry bunch
1982bronco 03-02-2003, 01:54 AM i would like that. it will give me an idea on how to mount mine
gearrat 03-02-2003, 01:57 AM no prob get it done tomorrow
Big Mike C. 03-02-2003, 02:07 AM I considered doing the steering wheel mount...but a pillar mount would be nice. You guys too young to remember when they used to mount them on the hood?
Crazed 03-02-2003, 02:15 AM Nope, I remember them out on the hood, but they would be hard to see if they were covered in mud..
Big Mike C. 03-02-2003, 02:23 AM Not if you added the little chrome hood thing that looked like a bill on a ballcap...or I have seen the cowl induction hoods with the gauges mounted in them. Then you could take the headlight washer thingie off a benz and mount it to your gauges to wash the mud off.....duh...
Big Mike C. 03-02-2003, 02:24 AM Someday...crazed...we shall meet...and I'm bringin' my hair clippers! ;)
Crazed 03-02-2003, 02:24 AM    :stupid:

Crazed 03-02-2003, 02:33 AM AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! NO way..
gearrat 03-02-2003, 02:34 AM i remeber those they had them on the pontiac's and on some mopars
1982bronco 03-02-2003, 01:07 PM i never saw them in person but i have seen them in magazines and what not. the steering wheel mount would be a cool place to put it or the hole in the dash where the speaker would go.
offroad_joe 03-02-2003, 09:29 PM Here's were I put mine.

allcruisen 03-03-2003, 01:25 AM Just a thought, on my '84 I just picked up a instrument cluster with a tach., from a bone yard. Took mine off, put that one on and that was it. Just another thought if you wanna go with the OEM look. My '84 was prewired and I am sure that everyone elses' is also. I cant see Ford making two different harnesses. My .023
Allcruisen
Crazed 03-03-2003, 03:56 AM I put a factory dash with a tach into my 89 also, all the wires were there, just plug and play.
MOUNTAINMAN 03-04-2003, 07:27 PM no prob get it done tomorrow

gearrat 03-05-2003, 10:56 PM sorry guys been kinda busy with work and all please i have to get another digi cm so pleawse bare with me
81Bronk36 03-06-2003, 04:37 AM well I used the factory hole to mount it. I took apart the dash, all the way down to needles. I had to shave a little bit of the white back support to get a 2 1/8 tach(autogage) and drill a hole in the back for the wires to run through. the clear plastic will go over the tach when its mounted flush with the black. It looks really good, if I had to do it over again I wouldnt have used a knife to shave it but instead a hole saw to the correct size, that would have been perfect. I used some black sand paper to fill in the square hole around the round tach. It looks ok, its hard to notice unless the lights are on cuz the green light shines around it a bit and you need the light in the tach to see in the dark. I ended up having to wire gauge lights on a seperate switch cuz I caught the white wire on fire by installing a bigger fuze in the dash light circuit(It blew the 10, 15 and finally a 20 caught the wire on fire.)
I got pictures of my tach, but I dont have them with me!! Also no scanner doesnt help either.
