My old '67 stang, when I bought it it still had the polyglas 70s on it! Hi-po 289 with 3/4 cam, old Torker (canted carb) Hays clutch, modified hurst shifter, aluminum dash, disc brakes...electrical fire done her in...

Hey felix is that a manual? If it is have you thought about a t5 5speed out of a late model. I went ahead and put the t5 in mine and it fits great. I did score the tranny with a hurst comp shifter, hays racing clutch, and an original cobra cast iron bellhousing all for 600. That also included the linkage and supercomp headers for the 289. That damn bellhousing must weigh 100+lbs :???: It does weigh more then the tranny itself. Good luck.

So this is why you asked me about welding......nice!

ZOSO
03-02-2003, 12:10 PM
Yeah welding that thin sheetmetal is a PITA! Once you got it down its pretty simple. Its all tack welds. Tack here move on to let cool. Tack there and move on to let it cool, and so on and so on. Just take your time on the body work.

allcruisen

Yeah David thats why, and ZOSO body is not bad. David, that welder I was looking at is about $600+ Bux, OuccccH.

Yeah, that's the average selling price for one, and don't forget, you'd still need the bottle, filled, and another 10lb spool of wire

If you really don't expect to be welding that often, and if that car is the primary reason for the welder and learning to weld, you'll do alright with a 135A 110V welder, even that's pretty expensive tho

ZOSO

16 bucks for a bottle isn't bad. But thats for co2 from a pop machine. Now if you get 75/25 co2/argon mix yeah its $$$$ You can weld with straight co2. Thats what I'm using.

Yeah its not bad once you know how to do it as I went into it blind and had never worked with it or welded it so its was different. I was burnin holes all the time cause I was use to weldin 1/8" and thicker.

I have a craftsman 110v and it works on about everything. I've welded 1/4in plate with no problem. Even welded spring pads on a diff before and has yet to break off.

Yeah, I just needed for the Mustang. Don't know if its better if I left it to the pro's. I know a guy who has a portable welder on the back of his truck, he used to do alot of welding on my dump truck.

I need to install the floors on the 'stang and that side of the picture.

Thanx for any other info.

You will save lots a money if you did it your self. Body shops charge a lot cause its very time consuming.

I say you do what David suggested and get yourself a 30-130amp 110V MIG welder and have at it. You can pick one up for under $500 all ready to go. When you're done you now have a welder you'll find many uses for. I just suggest that you don't het a 10/12lb spool of wire unless you plan on welding ALOT. It'll just rust inside the machine and you'll end up wasting it.

As far as replacing panels on old Mustangs go I generally try to butt weld patches in instead of replacing whole panel simply because:
- repro panels aren't as "crisp" as originals,
- it's harder to get an exact fit with a repro panel,
- it's hard to duplicate the factory spotwelds,
- and patching takes alot less time.

If done properly the repair is undetectable, and you still have all the factory seams, and welds. Welding thin sheetmetal isn't difficult, but it does take a little practice, and alot of patience. I have a 110A welder at home and I'm currently welding up oil cooler covers that are 22ga mild steel, and it's no problem at all.

Just my .02 as usual

Thanx guys for all the replies and support.

Paul.....I know the floor boards have been repaired once before, but not a good job, I guess that why the previous owner ordered all the flooring. I really thought that I could get away with a 200 bux mig welder from like harbor freight for this job. Like ZOZO mentioned its all tack welded.

Thats the only thing that is holding me back. I can always get the welder and have the boys work with it. He is gonna have to work on his car anyway.

The body is pretty straight, so no bodywork needed, other than prep and paint. I checked the other day and it only has the factory paint on the bottom and the dark blue on top. was not hard to get to bare metal.

Thanx and keep em coming, I take everyones advise.

Felix
