View Full Version : HYD Assist
NAMELESS 05-28-2003, 10:43 AM After this weekend I need to upgrade my steering. I hear a saginaw works well but Im thinking of HYD assist like Redneck Ram. Anyone have this set up? I hear you have to send them your box to get built but is an easy swap or are there other mods?

93_bronco 05-28-2003, 10:49 AM I think badassbronco did a tech writeup when he did his
81Bronk36 05-29-2003, 12:17 AM Yup BA does a write up on everything he does. He does everything too. You can do both, usually thats the way to go anyway cuz the stock pumps cant keep up well.
BadassBronco 05-29-2003, 10:40 AM yep, easy.
send them your box and have them do a stag one, where they take it apart and drill and tap it. when you get the box back you can install it right way as they set it up with caps so you dont have to run the ram right away.
figure otu a way to mount your cylinder to the axle, so it works in conjuntion good and doesnt over extend it.
have two hoses made with the proper ends and its installed
A saginaw pump is required, as the ford doesnt move enough fluid.
I also drillied out the sags fitting and notched it so i have more flow at idle.
i am running a bigger than average ram(2" bore), but steering response is instant and fast, i am running a steering cylinder off a john deere 7700 combine. it has the prefect amount of stroke for a dana 44. 8 3/4:, as most you can buy or get from west texas is a 8" or then the next step is a 10".

ask away if you have quesions.
i would have doen full hydraulic on it though if i didnt want to drive it on the road at all.
NAMELESS 05-29-2003, 11:34 AM Thanks BA, most likely Ill do a stage 2. Good write up
NAMELESS 06-02-2003, 03:47 PM Are you running a steering cooler?
jopes 06-02-2003, 05:39 PM I have been running a steering cooler ever since I lifted my bronco... Still on the stock ford pump and I can turn with a welded front end on the rocks. Never boiled my fluid either.
The more fluid capacity you can cram into the PS system the longer it will live.
NAMELESS 06-02-2003, 06:02 PM Im just stumped on my next move.......steering cooler or saginaw swap.......then go w/ the HYD assist.
It would be easier if I could keep the stock pump and a steering cooler but theres no sense if its gonna burn up. Guess Ill sit and ponder while my steering box gets tapped at Redneck Ram.
jopes 06-02-2003, 06:08 PM "IF" Matt is doing your box, you should have sent him a PS pump to modify as well.

I havent sent it out yet plan to today/tommorrow. He said he will do the pump for free  Im thinkn Ill get a saginaw pump for him to plumb too.

BadassBronco 06-03-2003, 12:37 AM yes, i run a cooler on the hydro assits bronco, and a cooler on my full hydro zuk.
NAMELESS 06-04-2003, 01:03 PM yes, i run a cooler on the hydro assits bronco, and a cooler on my full hydro zuk.
Where did you mount it and what size/model did you use(just for reference)?
BadassBronco 06-04-2003, 01:14 PM yes, i run a cooler on the hydro assits bronco, and a cooler on my full hydro zuk.
Where did you mount it and what size/model did you use(just for reference)?the bronco has small 3 line tranny cooler of an aero star that i wedged in the grill. my zuk has a rather big tube type thats mounted infront of the radiator.
Use the tube type, and not the stacked plate type, as the stacked plate doesnt let enough volume through.
NAMELESS 06-04-2003, 01:28 PM Thanks. Any pics?
BadassBronco 06-04-2003, 01:33 PM heres the big one on my full hydro zuk. this plus 50 feet of hose keep my fluid real cool!

NAMELESS 07-11-2003, 03:43 PM Steering box and pump were sent out yesterday from West Texas OffRoad (Redneck Ram). $475 for the complete kit w/ a 1 3/4 ram. Should get it soon and have a test run:thumbup

Davids78Bronco 07-23-2003, 12:57 PM That's sweet! How much better is that over your stock setup? I know it's better, but in your opinion, how much better?
NAMELESS 07-23-2003, 01:10 PM So far its great, I barely turn the wheel and it turns like no other. 100% inmpovement. Bleed the hell out of it but theres still some air in the lines, it will bleed out. Runnin just the ram w/ no stabalizer and turns great. Gonna hit the trail this weekend to test it out.

BadassBronco 07-28-2003, 03:44 PM yep, yours is in about the same exact spot mine is.
Crazed 07-28-2003, 03:51 PM Dude...is that bolt at the end touching the track bar?? just wondering.
NAMELESS 07-28-2003, 03:59 PM No, we had to make different bracket for the diff mount so it wouldnt hit. the bolt has about 2" for clearence and teasted good.
BadassBronco 07-28-2003, 07:50 PM just remember to weld another set of brackets to your spare tie rod.....
