I just did my Saginaw swap it was very easy and straight forward.

I went to the yard and found an 84 Econline van to get the pump and hose out of.

It took me only 3 wrenches (1/2", 9/16, & 5/8") and I had the pump, hose and all the brackets out in ten minutes.
Sorry no pics.

Got home and took mine out in about the same amount of time.

Here are all the parts. To the left is the stock engine mount bracket for the Power steering pump Top Right is the Saginaw Pump with the pump bracket and hose that came on it out of an 84 Econoline van. Bottom Roght is the Stock pump and its half of bracket (Gotta use the Van's high pressure line)

Saginaw pump and its own bracket. Bolt holes are 3-1/8" apart.

Stock Pump with it's bracket. bolt holes are 3-3/8" apart.

The motor portion of the bracket.

How the Stock Bracket needs to be modified.

All done. I just had to turn the oil pressure sending unit so that it was pointing up.

PM me if you need pump bracket, and hose, i can usually get one to your door for under $60

OK did the swap and figured instead of starting another thread, might as well add on cuz I have a few additions that need to be mentioned for doing the swap on an even older vehicle. It appears that either A) they changed the stock bracket in 1982 since Superdaves bracket has numbers on them saying they were designed in 1982(E2) , where as mine says it was designed in 78(D8)

B.)Or the fact that my truck was originally A/C made the changes not necessary. BUTTT.... I didnt have to modify my bracket, only the distance that it came out from the frame. Here is how I did that...

I cut the extention like peice off the aluminum bracket with the sawzall and it was just about perfect (non of my brackets are lined up within the milli-inch or anything) but they dont ever squeel!!

Now I can turn like there is no tommorrow, its easier access to the fluid dipstick, its more bullet proof in general(on my old pump the cap came off and layed on my headers some how)

Best part is I didnt even have to really modify anything that I was gonna keep on the truck at all.

The entire swap cost me about $9.50 if you include PS fluid and 1 hose clamp cuz my other one was crappy.

Looks good man :beer You will be able to tell how much smoother it works compared to the garbage stock pump. :thumbup

This might be a stupid question but is the same pump used on GM cars. It looks exactly like the ones on my 79 Firebird & 79 T/A. The bracket part wouldn't bother me but if this is the same pump all i need is the pump and the hose or maybe a hose from the parts store since the gm gearbox might be diff. thanks for the help.:beer

ya, most of the same.

just have ahydro shop make you a custom hose using half of your bronco hose, and half of the saginaw hose.

watch out though, as some of the newer saginaw style pumps are metric instead of standard on all the fittings/studs...

Ahh whats the need for a hydro shop when my dad works as a mechanic at the road commission and they have the press and all the stuff there for making their own hydraulic lines.:thumbup :

The purpose of the saginaw swap is Higher pressure and better quality pump. It makes turning alot easier for us with bigger tires and also has the fluid output to run hydraulic assit steering or a hydro winch. Saginaw is the name of the pump, because of where it was manufactured.

If you are aware of the stock Ford whiney, crappy, wont turn big tires power steering pump (refered to as the C2 I believe) that came in trucks and other cars, you are aware of the potential for an improvement.

For some reason Ford put these crappy pumps in trucks and really good ones in vans. So upgrading tires or being in a trail requiring lots of maneuvering puts a huge strain on the stock C2 pump.

Replace the pump, bracket, and high pressure hose, and it bolts right in.
