Since I blew up my D44 slipshaft I am upgrading the a Beefier D50.
The differance in the two are unbelievable. The length and the splines
are the same. Unfortunately the slipshaft is the only part that will swap
into the D44 but since that is the part that broke, Thats fine with me.
I will post pix tommorow when I start.
I am also going the replace the U-joints with stronger Spicers.

:thumbup I just did the same thing. Here are a couple of pics of mine. I took thejuice's advice and had the cap tack welded to help keep the spring from popping through.

Ball joint press from harbor freight (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=38335)
It regularly sells for about $40, but I waited until it went on sale for $29.99 before I bought. It's definitely worth the money though. I also used it to press the axle pivot and rear leaf spring eye bushings in and out.
For the spring, I started by cutting it to the length of what Andy had used and it just had too much spring in it. Ended up cutting that down a couple of times before I finally felt comfortable.

You mean Cap (singular) don't you? Not talking U joint caps, just so you know. No need to do that with this joint, it uses external retainers and is plenty strong as is. Just need to tack the one cap that is really a press fit end plug for the female (receptacle) part of the slipyoke.
If you're changing ujoints, go to sixstates. I paid about $15.50 for spicer 760x (outer axleshaft), and about $19 for the D50 799X.

when -not using the c-clip people put a spring in joint to keep it pushed in the 3rd member. if you do not sap a couple spots on the press in cap it will push out allog the spring to not keep the axle in the 3rd and it will come out at the wrong time.
i have not done this yet but when i re-gear the front i will.

Yes, we've already done this. Pony-boy is just copying what others have done. If you're interested, just open this link:

Thanks Mark,
Yeah um, I'm not to articulate. I am going the weld the U-joint caps to the shaft ears to get more strength out of them, I thought it would be a good fix so the caps are thicker. :goodfinge J/K. Yeah Greg did that already.
And ha put the 799X Spicer in the D50. I am getting the 760X this week
and putting them in the outters. I have the new ones in there but I think I am done with Schucks hardware.
