View Full Version : Rear Bumpers 80-96 (big mike bumpers)

These are the "big mike" style bumpers that several members have, Raf has one on Bronkzilla, MSU Foreman has one and Dustin is running this design. There are several others out there but I forget the names. These are built from 3/16" or 1/4" (based on availability) box tube and 1/2" plate. These bumpers look killer, improve your departure angle and are super strong. They are custom built to fit with any bodylift you have so there is no ugly gap above the bumper. Reciever hitches are flush mounted and pin in from behind the bumper for a really clean look. Shackle tabs fit 4 3/4 ton shackles. Tire carriers pivot on trailer spindles and tapered roller bearings and are greasable. The price of these bumpers is directly driven by the price of steel. I try to buy steel in bulk to keep the price as low as possible.Steel prices have dropped slightly so instead of $290 Bumpers are now $265 plus shipping. Tire carriers are another $185 plus shipping. Shipping is from 72934 and rates can be checked at fed ex .com Please P.M. me for more info. Or give me a call 479-461-0522

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks, Mike

I have one of Big Mikes bumpers w/o the tire carrier. I've had it for about 2.5 years now and it has held up great. When I received it, it fit right the FIRST time w/o any banging, bending, welding and/or modifications on my part. I would highly recomend the bumper plus Mike is a stand up guy. In these pics I had it line x'ed but I would not advise doing that b/c rocks peel the stuff off like a banana. Your much better off painting it with a rattle can.

they should fit, the frames should be the same back there

yep gotta say I love my bumper, I did however build mine way back in the day but Ive beat the piss out of it on the rocks and held the truck up with it many times. I need to add a tire carrier soon tho, one of many things on my list.

Ive been havig a hard time finding the right size steel to build them around here. when I did 94chickentacos bumper I had left over from mine but i cant seem to find it anymore at the yards around here.

I have a matching design for a front winch bumper BUT with the goofy frame horns on the newer rigs it requires welding mounting brackets to the frame and fitting the thing so it looks right. I may have a front bumper with an install kit available in the future but it will be awhile. Like Dustin said these should fit the 87-90 models but I will verify that and let ya'll know. Thanks for the kind words Brian and Dustin. Steel is the big problem with building these, I have been quoted as much as $26 a foot for the tube. That is why I'd like to build at least five of these at once that way I can keep the price reasonable.

Keep us posted on the possibility of these bumpers fitting the 87-91 model years, as I would be very interested in getting one from you.
What size tire can fit on the tire carrier?

All right, its been quite a day. I've measured three rigs and have had the bumpers off of two others.....I'm happy to say these bumpers will fit ALL years 80'-96'. I was amazed at how flimsy those chrome bumpers are, make no mistake this is a HARDCORE wheeling bumper that you will never tear up.
Max tire size the carrier will hold? Probably a 40" or 42" Raf's was built for a 37" but I think he's got a 39.5" on his now. I've had a 35" on mine for three years with zero problems. I'll build it to hold whatever you have up to a 44" just let me know the size so the carrier can be built to center the tire where you want it for looks. If it ever breaks I'll fix it. These bumpers and carriers have a lifetime warranty not to break and to fit properly.

Would this be strong enough to tow a 19' boat probably 3500-4000lbs?

I really like the design and would also be interested. I looked up shipping to my zip code and it said $38. I was guessing on the weight and dimensions though. I said 60lbs, 50" long, 12" height, 12"width just for the bumper no tire carrier. The price seemed kinda cheap but it sounds good to me.

The stock rear bumper is around 76" and I have a piece of 2"x6" tube steel at home that is already the right length that I'm gonna attempt to make a similar bumper with as soon as I get my mig welder. That piece is way more than 60 lbs. Just FYI. I'm sure shipping will be way more than $38

I'm sorry ya'll, I thought I posted the shipping weight.......Bumpers weigh 85lbs. and packaged will be 74" long 12" wide and 12" high. Carriers are 35lbs and measure aprox. 47" long 30" high and 8" thick.
These bumpers will tow anything you'd want to hook to your rig, they are stronger than any reciever style hitch I've seen. I used to regularly tow a 23' boat, and have towed my trailer with an f-250 powerstroke on it no prob.(execpt my e4od got pissed off) :brownbag ....heres a couple more pics for ya'll.

Big Mike got a few questions...

1. In your pictures you show 2 different style tire carriers, which one will you be making?

2. I have a hitch already, will the new bumper interfer with that? And if not can you make it without the hitch.

I know these may be stupid questions :twak but just wanted to know :thumbup

i got some questions too
- How did you attach the license plate to the one above because it looks like it has an air hose on and you were using it for anair tank?
- I was wonder about the spare tire carrier being different too
- Are all of yours made to be air tanks like the one above?

Dustin
01-12-2005, 09:42 AM
looks like he just screwed it to the bumper...I built a nice little plate holder and welded it to the bumper. I had to trim the plate down about .5"in so it would hang down below the bumper.

sorry bad picture but can get a better one if anyone wants.

I don't want to answer for mike but I will say about the spare tire carrier is that he will confirm with you what you want. The last pics he posted are his bumper and he wanted the spare in the middle. I'll be getting mine with it mounted to the right like in the first pics. You lose alot of visibility out the middle with the tire like that but you can see the corners better mines a daily driver and I want to be able to see out the rear window which is why I want it to the right like stock. As for the rest we have to wait for mike. I can't wait, it seems like the people that have these bumpers really like them.

csn.rebel
01-12-2005, 08:33 PM
KHT thats why i asked. Mine too is a daily driver. Thats cool on that. Thanks! :thumbup

big mike
01-13-2005, 09:58 PM
Keith (kht428) is exactly right on the carrier. It's just a matter of personal preferance where the tire goes, I liked mine in the center so I could see both corners better. Others like it more in the stock position. With it in the center your rearveiw mirror is useless. I'll build it any way you like, but remember, anywhere you hang a 35 or bigger back there is going to affect your visibilty. The air hose seen in the pics of my rig is comming from a tank under the rig, not from the bumper. Using the bumper for an air tank is an option, I can easily add an air inlet, outlet and condensate drain for a few more bucks.

How hard would it be to put your tire carrier on my factory bumper. My back bumper is sturdy enough to hold it im sure but what would i do weld the pivot onto it and how about the latch would it be easy to convert to my bumper. :shrug

big mike
01-20-2005, 12:18 AM
Those weights and dimensions should be pretty close. Attachment to factory bumper is impossible. Besides the fitment problems, the stamped steel will not take the welds needed, they will just crack out. After being stamped that steel is just to brittle.

Turn around time is 7-10 days (execpt for keith) center mount is the same price as right side mount. Air volume is not much, probably not enough to justify getting goo and corosion(sp?) in the bumper.

It isn't that he isn't building them. It is because his job has sent him out of his home state.

Oh! Plus when he does get back to making them I'm First! :goodfinge j/k

me too - I'll wait. Just let us know when you're able to build again. There's no point in getting something 2nd rate if we know you'll be back some time in the future.

If you get back before I get a new welder then I'm in for one Mike... I'm already bumperless so half my work is already done. But I will have to do something pretty soon, I need tow points bad.

Did you use the 3 stock holes where the old bumper was bolted up? The reason I ask is I had considered extending the bumper mounting brackets in and utilizing the two rivet holes in the back of the leaf shackles.

As you might have noticed, Mike's stopped building bumpers, because of his work. If you'd like, I can build it for you, or, as you've stated yourself, wait til you get your welder

Just curious, are you going to build the same style or somewhat similar to it?
If so, how much?

Once again, Mike's not building any bumpers. but I am, and have plenty of 78-9's to model from. Email me at diamondbackmotorsports@gmail.com And when/if you do, send me a zip code for a business address, so I can get a shipping estimate, also
