View Full Version : Rock Sliders 80-96 (soon to have 78-79 years)
Dustin 01-26-2005, 11:50 PM Get yourself a set of the orginal rock sliders for fullsize broncos. made from 2x2" .188wall square tube and 1.5" .120wall round tube makes for some serious body protection. Also makes for a great replacement for your chrome nerf bars and make a great step.
Currently I only build them for the 80-96 trucks but soon will have a version for the 78-79.

I have beat the piss out of my set and they just ask for more. they have been slamed on with the whole weight of the truck, highlifted the truck off the ground, winched off off, anchored from, and used to pivot the truck around the rocks. I am sure without them I wouldnt be able to open my doors at all.

Mounting is really easy, I include plates that can either be welded to the frame or bolted. The rear leg on the driver side fits right between the ebrake cables on the 92-96 models, the older trucks may need to modify the adjuster bolt on the ebrake cable depending on year.
(my plate wasent centered but all others will be)

the front leg mounting changes depending on what kind of lift you have and if you have extended radias arms. this is important and need to know info for me to build them correctly
http://www.superford.org/getfile/45469/fullsize/P6200012.jpg
I can also build just the main part of the slider if you want to do your own mounts, for custom applications I can build them to supplyed measurements

84x4bronco 01-27-2005, 12:22 AM Nice Ad!
I can attest to the quality of these... ive got a set. :rockon
AndyBronco 01-27-2005, 02:11 AM me too and ive tested them quite a bit defintly worth it. they are very stong and dont even move instead of destroying my rocker like i did before all i hear is a loud bang if i come down hard on a rock and nothing happens to the body :thumbup for dustin
bnkrtstk 01-27-2005, 08:48 AM I've seen them in action on Jackhart's rig, and am anxiously waiting for 78-79 version to go into production.
jackhart 01-27-2005, 12:56 PM yeah, they work alright...do yourself a favor and get a set of these.

Dustin 01-27-2005, 03:05 PM thanks for the good words guys! :thumbup
great pick jackhart, I was looking for one i had like that but couldnt find it
Gacknar 01-27-2005, 03:18 PM What iff you have a body lift?
Can you build them with the mounts angled up to compinsate for the higher up body?
Dustin 01-27-2005, 08:29 PM accually I built a set for 84x4bronco with a 3" body lift. on his 84 it was really simple and I just moved the whole thing up and welded it on. the frame on the older trucks dosent have the extra steel on the top side which makes the frame uneven on the newer trucks. Again we weleded it too so I dont know if bolting would be possible in a body lift application due to where you would have to move the mounts. Ill ask him for a picture.
84x4bronco 01-27-2005, 09:46 PM i have some nice pics of mine all scratched up in the martinez canyon folder! the pictures dustin asked for are in this hyperlink:
Slider mounts (http://www.supermotors.org/clubs/fullsizebronco/registry/vehicles/detail.php?id=6403&s=22710#content)
:rockon its worth it. :rockon
GHOSTRIDER 01-27-2005, 10:02 PM Daaaayum Dustin....you do quality work.....take a bow
Dustin 01-28-2005, 01:40 AM here is a good comparasion of the frames
my 93, see the extra metal on top portion of the frame?
http://www.superford.org/getfile/45469/fullsize/P6200012.jpg
clints 84 dosent have that so the mounts can go up easier.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/173175/fullsize/DSCN1621.JPG
I fear this will cause a problem with the later model trucks in getting the sliders to fit with a body lift I know they will work on the older trucks like clints, but I dont have first hand knowledge on the newer ones. I know I could get them to fit, but to do it without the truck might be tricky
axaviere 01-28-2005, 02:12 AM when i built mine i did the box section first. after that, i put them where i wanted and used a jack to hold it up there. then i used them angle magnets that you use to hold your steel while you weld. then i cut the 2"x2"x.250" square angled on both ends so it was flush against the frame plates and the slider box tube. then tacked it on and finished welding off the truck. my 2x2 is angled up (or was it down?) i think so a body lift can be compensated for easily... if you have the vehicle to work with.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/153269/fullsize/slid.jpg
this is a rough sketch to show crawler what i wanted made
oh yeah, the 78-9 frame tapers so one 2x2 was longer than the other on each side. the fuel line runs on the other side of where you want to weld the 2x2. there was something else too, but i cant recall at the moment
MolsonMan 01-28-2005, 11:41 AM if you need a "Tester" , you could send me a free set..LOL ive got a 3" body lift
on a 1990..
jokes... but they look good man, hope you do well, coulda used them on my rig, saved myself some body damage
Dustin 01-28-2005, 04:07 PM I would be willing to cut someone a deal if they supply the truck. also if you have access to a welder I can do the outers and supply you with the legs so you cn mount them according to your body lift
Dustin 02-23-2005, 08:11 PM checking out a 79 bronco this weekend so stay tuned for a set to be avaiable
b wojo 02-23-2005, 11:38 PM Dustin, How much for the cut and bent stuff like in a weld it yourself kit... I can do the final fitting of pieces, prep, and welding. But, I dont have a bender or access to one, or a fishmouthing jig. It would be nice to have all of it done so I could do the rest myself and save some $$$$ Let me know if you are willing to do this.
peteyg 02-24-2005, 12:16 AM I also have Dustin Sliders, and they ROCK! Quality product for sure.
83rustbucket 02-24-2005, 12:45 AM I recently purchased some of these sliders. When they came in I was plesentaly suprised with the quality. The welds are cleen and the sliders in general are very beefy. I can not wait to get them on and try tarils that require some protection. I will post some pics when I get them mouted. I have all the confidence in the world that they will protect my rocker panels when needed. Do your self a favor and get them if protection is something that you conderned about.

are you wanting everything or just the bent tubes? I can do just the tubes for pretty cheap. If I do everything just not welded its going to be more. shipping on a bunch of peices will be more of a hassle and possibly cost more due to having seperate boxes instead of a completed slider.
b wojo 02-24-2005, 01:08 AM Actually, I could prbably get away with just the bent outer tubes and source the rest here... but the fishmouthed innerbar to outer tube spacers would be nice too... just tape the hell out of em to the outer bars??
Dustin 02-24-2005, 01:23 AM i could notch 2 tubes on each end and leave enough extra for you to cut to length. the round tubes I would also leave extra for you to cut to length
b wojo 02-24-2005, 01:32 AM That would work.... Lemme know.. Also, where in AZ are you ?? my In laws go to Phoenix pretty often to see my sis in law. They could P/U and bring back if your near instead of shipping.
Dustin 02-24-2005, 09:37 AM Im in the phx area as well, pick up would be the best idea and save you alot on shipping.
GHOSTRIDER 02-24-2005, 10:30 PM Hang in there Dusitn.....looking good...send me a pair for free and I will sing your praises out loud...
Dustin 02-24-2005, 11:27 PM Hang in there Dusitn.....looking good...send me a pair for free and I will sing your praises out loud...
um yeah free :histerica
freetruck 04-01-2005, 05:58 AM Do you also sell the front bumper???
Dustin 04-01-2005, 10:09 AM Do you also sell the front bumper???
yes but I require the truck to be here to build it on, there are too many varrations in body to frame alignment on each truck. If I didnt it off the vehicle I couldnt be sure it would fit when you recieved it.
bnkrtstk 04-01-2005, 10:15 AM Are 78-79 available yet?
jackhart 04-01-2005, 12:15 PM Are 78-79 available yet?

yeah i do paypal, sorta sucks cause they nail me on the fees
Dustin 04-01-2005, 03:46 PM Are 78-79 available yet?
not quite, I have however found a truck to mock up,just need to find the time to get over there and do it. soon tho
bnkrtstk 04-01-2005, 04:02 PM not quite, I have however found a truck to mock up,just need to find the time to get over there and do it. soon tho
hands on hips, tapping foot. Can I get a test bed, prototype discount? :toothless
83rustbucket 04-01-2005, 07:52 PM I finally installed mine before Moab and they saved my ass a couple of times. these things are verry well built and probably one of the best things I have done to my Bronco.
Dustin 04-01-2005, 07:55 PM hands on hips, tapping foot. Can I get a test bed, prototype discount? :toothless
if you want to weld the mounts on yourself. I would concider doing that but you would have to figure out where the mounts need to go, weld them onto the slider and shoot me some pics and measurements.
bnkrtstk 04-01-2005, 08:47 PM if you want to weld the mounts on yourself. I would concider doing that but you would have to figure out where the mounts need to go, weld them onto the slider and shoot me some pics and measurements.
That could be doable.
Dustin 04-01-2005, 09:00 PM Im going wheeling/camping this weekend, let me come up with a price get back to you. the beginning of the week
I would just need an overall length measurement and distance away from the frame, but I would go over it with you before hand
Accessory Man 04-02-2005, 12:32 AM yeah i do paypal, sorta sucks cause they nail me on the fees
When I get enough in my paypal account from selling on ebay again, I will cover the fees. Paypal is my play money, just had to drain the account though to cover unexpected expenses, I should be built up again by May 1st if all goes well.
shipwreck 04-02-2005, 01:18 AM Very nice, would be a nice addition to my 79
89XLT 08-10-2005, 05:27 PM Hey Dustin--haven't seen much movement in the thread, but if you are still doing the sliders I would like to hook up a set if you are??
Dustin 08-11-2005, 10:02 AM yeah Im still doing them, unforgently Ive been really busy with work and such. I still have a set Im trying to complete so I need to get those out the door before i go starting another set. I should have them done by this weekend tho.
89XLT 08-11-2005, 12:13 PM I definately want to get them, I like the 1.5x3 rec tube like theJuice has for the main section if you can do that, I know I need to do measurements etc as well. Let me know what you need.
2fastnaz 08-11-2005, 04:21 PM yeah Im still doing them, unforgently Ive been really busy with work and such. I still have a set Im trying to complete so I need to get those out the door before i go starting another set. I should have them done by this weekend tho.
This weekend?? Really?? Just teasing man, take your time.
Dustin 08-11-2005, 11:06 PM I definately want to get them, I like the 1.5x3 rec tube like theJuice has for the main section if you can do that, I know I need to do measurements etc as well. Let me know what you need.
Are you taking about 1.5"x3" box for the main part of the slider? I wasent aware he was using that size tubing. Is it 2x4" maybe? I can whatever size you want, however it might bump the price a tad depending on steel costs
Dustin 08-11-2005, 11:09 PM This weekend?? Really?? Just teasing man, take your time.
yeah dude Im ashamed Its taken me this long. problem is you too nice on time frame. I keep putting it off for other crap :brownbag I worked on them some until I needed to notch the tubes, my tube notcher too a dump so I need to pick up a new one, so I can make nice straight cuts again. I can have them done in about 1.5hr once I get my ass in gear. its all welding at this point
Thats accually why I havent taken on any other slider deals due to not getting yours done.
89XLT 08-12-2005, 01:42 AM Yeah the 1.5" x3" square tube for the main part of the slider, he has it posted in "the ultimate slider thread" with a couple good pics.
I can get the measurements tomorrow the fenders are opened up a little, what else will you need? If you want to email me the detail etc, my email is admin@outcast4x4.com, thanks.
-Marty
Dustin 08-12-2005, 02:18 AM if you going to use 3" wide tubing your going to need to cut off the fender mount tab on the front fender or push the slider out past it just fyi. just get me an overall length measurement and distance from frame that you want. for example you need to tell me how far you want them to sit under the body.
89XLT 08-12-2005, 10:41 AM Good point I'll just stick with the 2" you have been uusing then I need to keep the fender mount tab if possible. Length would need to be 63 1/4" and from the frame to the back of the slider looks like 16 1/2" and I like the ends angled top to bottom ( \______/ ) if that makes sense.
2fastnaz 08-12-2005, 01:42 PM Now that Big MIke is out of the bumper bus. I was going to be using you again. I just don't have the tools anymore for doing that heavy of metal work. (damn woman). But like I said no hurry man. I can't afford the gas to go any where so...........
89XLT 08-12-2005, 05:33 PM also it has a 4" suspension lift with drop brackets for the stock radius arms if that matters
Dustin 08-13-2005, 04:04 PM Now that Big MIke is out of the bumper bus. I was going to be using you again. I just don't have the tools anymore for doing that heavy of metal work. (damn woman). But like I said no hurry man. I can't afford the gas to go any where so...........
I have done a couple bumpers like his. mine and chickentacos. Since I dont want to step on his toes I will pretty much only build them for people local to AZ. just let me know when your ready. I will have to check on steel avaiability tho, last time with tacos rig I couldnt find any, but that has been a while now. I can build those off the rig as well.
Dustin 08-13-2005, 04:11 PM Good point I'll just stick with the 2" you have been uusing then I need to keep the fender mount tab if possible. Length would need to be 63 1/4" and from the frame to the back of the slider looks like 16 1/2" and I like the ends angled top to bottom ( \______/ ) if that makes sense.
yeah you keep the fender tab the way I build mine. your about and inch shorter than normal so thats doable. I can turn the angles the direction as well so no biggy there. I will pm you details here in a few
beequewl 08-27-2005, 03:45 AM So is there a waiting list to get in on these? I would love to buy a set fer my 90.
Dustin 08-28-2005, 12:11 AM I finally got 2fastaz sliders done so currently I dont have a wait, the problem is Im really busy with at work and trying to get ready for my vacation in about a month(still some things to do to the bronco)
shoot me your zip code and I will get a total price for you on monday and give you a time frame on when I could get them done.
beequewl 08-28-2005, 04:14 AM was that directed to me? 98133 then. and no rush. but i definately want a pair.
Dustin 08-28-2005, 12:46 PM was that directed to me? 98133 then. and no rush. but i definately want a pair.
yes it was sorry about that, I will check into shipping and let you know
beequewl 09-20-2005, 02:06 PM soooo... how bout them sliders? still in no rush, but before spring would be cool.... :twotu:
Dustin 09-20-2005, 08:58 PM pmed you dude.....sorry it took so long
junedick 09-21-2005, 05:55 AM sent you a pm
89XLT 09-22-2005, 11:36 AM Hey Dustin, I never got the pm on the details???
AKBearMoose 09-22-2005, 12:56 PM I haven't read through...but what is the status on 78-79 Bronco sliders? PM me if you have them designed...prices...design style... etc. :thumbup
Dustin 09-23-2005, 08:47 PM Hey Dustin, I never got the pm on the details???
sent a pm to ya dude....sorry it took so long, Im having job issues so my life is hell right now.
as for the 78-79 years I still havent been able to track down a willing donor to let me use there truck. I was going to use erics then he rolled it down a mountain so thats out. might check with davids78bronco, I know he is talking about getting a set built real soon
Brokenbronco 09-24-2005, 04:12 PM Can you make a slider with a lower step built in to it?
Dustin 09-24-2005, 05:25 PM Can you make a slider with a lower step built in to it?
sure you have any sketches or pics of what your talking about?
maybe I will try and bend something up in the next couple days to show you what Im thinking of for a step, however it will get caught on rocks if thats what you plan to use it for

maybe I will try and bend something up in the next couple days to show you what Im thinking of for a step, however it will get caught on rocks if thats what you plan to use it for
I would like something like this http://www.n-fab.com/products/ford/Full/1007.jpg
I'm not to worried about rocks, i'm not a hard core rock crawler, moderate trails is the most that i do.
MikE2 09-25-2005, 04:56 PM These work great
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/191010/fullsize/000_0126.JPG
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/191014/fullsize/000_0127.JPG
because the chain runs over the top of the slider the bottom is completly smooth so you can slide easily on them over rocks and stuff. And if something hits them there not going to bend/break or push the slider up in to the body like it would with a rigid step. The mounts can just be welded on to the back of the slider, then you can bolt on the length of chain that you want. All I used is a piece of 1/2" plate with a 7/16" hole drilled in it and then the link of the chain is bolted through that.
They are a little clumsy at first, but after having them a few weeks you will hop right in the truck without even thinking about it. Only disadvantage is they really cant be used when getting out of the truck, so you gotta slide out there.
And incase you were wondering, They do not even move or rattle at any speed. I have gone 100 MPH with them on there and they dont even swing in the wind.
derrick36 09-25-2005, 05:00 PM I was thinkin' something more like this drawing.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/153269/fullsize/slid.jpg
Maybe if it came down a little bit more.
MikE2 09-25-2005, 06:40 PM Youd have to have it back more.

That's about the same as the pic that i posted
XLTbeast 09-27-2005, 01:03 AM if anyone ever gets a hold of a 73-79 regular cab truck and makes a pair of sliders to go from the front wheel well to the back i want a pair. or when you get the 78-79 pair dustin i could just give you the length cause other than theat they should be the same.
Dustin 09-27-2005, 01:41 AM not to sound like a dick but crawler become a vender and make your own post.
read the vender rules.....
Dustin 09-27-2005, 01:43 AM That's about the same as the pic that i posted
I can do that as well, the step is going to be a little larger than you have pictured there. This is due to the die radias, my camera is MIA currently so Im trying to dig up a mock up pic for you.
your looking at about 75 bucks more for a step
Brokenbronco 09-27-2005, 09:15 AM Look forward to seeing those pics.
Dustin 09-27-2005, 05:56 PM ok here you guys go, sorry for the crappy pics but this is my backup camera that has been droped, thrown, and run over by the bronco.
also I did my best to mock something up without accually building them, you should get the idea tho
I can bring the hoop closer to theslider depending on how much you want it to stick out but this will give you an idea on how wide it would be

Brokenbronco 09-27-2005, 08:03 PM The bottom pic is the one i will want. Pm me your # so we can talk.
Brokenbronco 09-28-2005, 11:10 PM I got your pm, i'll call ya this weekend, if that's ok.
Dustin 09-29-2005, 01:14 AM thats fine, just call on saterday, sunday Im heading out to moab
Dave88LX 10-07-2005, 10:20 AM Being pretty new to off-roading, what's the advantages to these? I take it the allow you to "slide along rocks" as they're called, and not bang up your body? Anything more to it? Great looking work BTW.
I've got a '79 Bronco, unfortunately I'm not near enough to you to drop it off for mock-up.
mike.norton53 10-23-2005, 10:40 AM i might order pair in jan. just to give you a hed's up dustin. i just want the basic design like in your pics on the first post.
what is the time between my order and delivery?
Dustin 10-23-2005, 01:43 PM all depends on wha tI have going on when you order.... most of the time if Im not real buys I can get them done in a week. If I have alot going on it might take a little longer
Tank92 02-16-2006, 01:38 PM dustin I sent you a PM;)
edluvsbronc 04-25-2006, 03:11 PM thats $300 for the set of two right? hoy much would it cost to have them welded on at a shop?
Dustin 04-25-2006, 06:43 PM yes thats a set. it all depends on what your shop charges for labor. each place is differnt.
edluvsbronc 04-26-2006, 11:51 AM defiently looking into a pair. gotta get my lift done first.
vegasbronco1 04-26-2006, 11:55 PM You have a PM.
Thanks, John

Have you had any more thoughts on this style? I like the looks of it about that size also. Would it be welded on like that or would it be one peice bent in the middle? Like the pic below. (Don't knock the paint skillz.)

biggrbbronco96 09-12-2006, 02:46 PM Thats a very nice bumper in the 1st pic on the 1st thread you posted-- did you make that bumper or what? If you made it how much would you charge me for it and if not can you tell me where i can get one? Thanks :drinkbud
Dustin 09-12-2006, 04:20 PM I have built it along with everything on my bronco.
I do not build custom bumpers off the truck. I am very picky on fit and require to have the truck to build it on. that way I can ensure everything fits as it should.
sprky 09-17-2006, 02:33 AM PM'ed you.
Late Model Man 11-11-2006, 06:05 PM Dustin- Do you use bumpstops to keep the sliders from damaging the body if they hit it or is our frame really that rigid?
Can I have a pic if you do?

no bumpstops. they do touch the body but not enough to damage it. it spreads the load evenly when they do it.
