ok first off sorry no pictures :flipoff:

ok to the install
i bought a auburn mini spool from national drivetrain for 153 shipped

here are the steps
1) raise rear of trucka dn suppost with jackstands
2) remove rear tires and drums
3) after raising the rear end remopve the diff cover bolts startiing at the
botom( i have found this to be the easy way)
4) drain diff of the gear oil
5) drop you drive line that way you can turn the pinion and carrier
6) on the side of the carrier will be a 8mm bolt that hold the pin in place
remove it
7) turn your carrier to remove the upper spider gears
8) have a helper pus in the axle shafts and remove the c-clips
9) remove the last two spider gears
10) place the fisrt part of the new mini spool in where the spioder gear was
11) do the same on the other side making sure you REPLACE the c clips
12) next place the last two parts of the mini spool in the middle of the two
side halves
13) replace the carrier pin
14) replace the carrier pin bolt
15) reconnect your drive line
16) put the diff cover back on with a new gasket
17) put gear oil in
18) repeat steps 1&2 in reverse order and go test

yea basicly all you are doing is replaciing the spider gears with teh mini spool

03-03-2003, 09:46 PM
So would it be worth it to swap it out for spider gears when you get back from a wheeling trip, and then put it back in when you want to go wheelin? I go wheeling about once a month

I have had a mini in a 9 inch for a little over a year now and love it. Your tires will chirp, this is because the axle actually twists a little like a torsion bar. I have yet to snap an axle or have any problems associated with the mini. Tire wear is noticable, espedcially on the right rear, but if you rotate your tires it isn't a problem. The only thing is street driving in snow! Take it slow in the curves...

and Gearrat...$153!!!! for a mini? I paid about forty for mine. You could have gotten a full spool for that amount!

i paid that much because of the rear emd being a 8.8 and i had no choice

Old thread I know, but I thought I should let this be known. Now Auburn Gear includes a couple shims with their mini-spools as I found out Saturday. These must go on the mini. Gearrat and I were talking about this Saturday night. Apparently when he ordered his, they didn't include them, but mine did however. Just thought I'd give a heads up to anyone who's planning on a mini-spool in the back.
