River crawling...
http://www.supermotors.org/registry/vehicles/showmedia.php?id=193588

Trails... trails and more trails. I would have gotten some more "whoring shots" in but seeing as how my rig is ALMOST stock, my spotter (Radio) was busy making sure we didn't go over the side of the mountain, instead of looking cool. Since I'm closed/open... I didn't want to risk going up the narrow a$$ jeep trail. We'll try to get some more exploring in today. We had to use the KCs going back... any requests?

It's getting bad. 460, where I used to live in Fl, we had a BUNCH, like 1,000 acres +- of dunes. They built 20-30 foot tall sand dunes around them, spilling into the road because the shoppers and city council complained that they could see us 1/2 mile away...

I guess I'll try to participate a little more this month, despite the fact that I should have been asleep hours ago...

This is the oldest pic I could find, and it looks it. One of my early trail rides in Louisiana.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/146916/fullsize/Before.jpg

This was just after my first wreck - a car hit me in the RR & spun me around to here, before it wrapped itself around that pole. I drove away; he went to the hospital. It wasn't until years later that I noticed the other Bronco in the background.

After what was supposed to be a 2 hr trip to go shooting turned into a 12 hr nightmare because of 3 drunk friends who showed up, I realized I needed better bumpers.

I think it's worth noting that virtually every part on the truck is OE Ford (bumpers & winch being the obvious exceptions), and came from junkyards across the country. The only truly original parts are the dash shell, the rear seat, & the transfer case (which I've never opened).

I beleive the Brand name is California Dash, as someone mentioned, I got it from my old job, got the hole kit for under $70. I went with carbon fiber because there are other companies that make other pieces and unlike wood carbon fiber will match from different sources.

Come on people VOTE for me!!!!!! I wheel as much as a low bank account and a Daily driver allow. If I damage it too bad I will be homeless, which wouldn't be so bad, but if the truck is damaged then I couldn't live there either!!!!!!

78bronco460

I've got some pictures of mod's I've done, mostly for my reference so I can remember what parts go where.
A couple years after the 460 swap I popped a head at the drag strip. So I went and got a set of some DOVE-C heads for the motor. It liked em.
So I decided to put an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold on, and ditch that crappy Motorcraft 4300 carb for a better one I got off a Dodge 440 Interceptor motor I had. That woke it up.
Then I got greedy and put in a Comp 268H cam I got from Tony. I had a PJ gear drive sitting around I traded parts for so I thought, what the heck? and put that on too.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/101433/fullsize/Geardrive.JPG

That was all working pretty good, but the axles in front kept breaking for some reason. I went through a lot of them. By a lot I mean a couple dozen or more. So I got off my wallet and bought a set of the Warn alloys and CTM u-joints. It was pricey, but after buying so many Spicer shafts, it was actually a sound investment and improved my amusement on the trails. I'd recommend it for anyone running a locked D44 in front. As luck (good or bad, I dunno) happens I got a freaky Dana 60 front out of a Dodge from a guy needing some gears done, so I took it and stared at it for a long time.
Hmmmm....

http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/113339/fullsize/0001231.jpg

Hmm...

http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/113344/fullsize/0001241.jpg

Not really promising, but I figured where there's a will there's a way and got to playing with this heavy thing. I mentioned the idea to a couple people and they said "You crazy? Read the Pirate D60 Bible? That thing is UNDESIRABLE! Low pinion, balljoint knuckle, center axle disconnect, 30 spline inner, unit bearing hubs, JUNK!
That was just what I needed to to hear. I got to work.
I cut off all those freaky brackets and stuff, made a truss, and started a project I had never thought I'd be doing-

http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/140246/fullsize/000139.JPG
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/140834/fullsize/000144.JPG

I decided to ditch the radius arms and build a 3 link for the front suspension, so I spent a lot of time measuring and designing what I wanted and built it.
I was pleased with everything to that point, but there were a couple issues to deal with yet. I needed a set of real hubs with lockouts and good stub shafts. So with a little scrounging and a little machining I got that handled.

http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/165424/fullsize/D60spindle1.jpg
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/165426/fullsize/D60spindle2.jpg

The 35 spline alloy stub shafts and Warn lockouts were the answer to most of my problems. From there it was a matter of finishing up.

http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/166627/fullsize/Lowerlink3.jpg
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/166628/fullsize/Lowerlink4.jpg
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/165410/fullsize/D60front1.jpg
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/165429/fullsize/Side2.jpg

There's a few pictures of months of work at the pace I work. I'm happy with the results so far. This is NOT a recipe for an ideal front axle, it's just what one guy did to see what he could get away with. So far so good. More to come...

No, not yet but we're getting there. We're trying to do this the mature responsible way.

1. Good jobs for the BOTH of us.
2. Two GOOD RUNNING vehicles.
3. A GOOD home.
4. Then we'll set a date...

We want to get married sooner but the tax income married thingy is too much of a burden for our brackets.

I need a good year-round all purpose tire for up here in the mud/snow/sand/dirt... maybe in a 37... what would you recommend since you've driven in almost everything?

thejuice runs those 37" Goodyear M/T's and they seem to work really well. I've always liked the BFG M/T's but a lot of people don't. You need some wheel speed to keep em cleaned out in the mud.

OK, now I'm gonna show you something really weird. I was going to use the Detroit out of my old D60 rear in the front when I did the front D60 swap, but I had another strange item come my way. It's called a PosiTrac made by Warn 30 years ago. I got the thing from a buddy for doing gear work for him. It was new and never installed, just sat in a race shop for all this time. It happened to be a 4.56 and up 30 spline unit so I figured I'd give it a try. It's heavy as hell, but it's an AWESOME front locker. There's no frictions, no springs, just lots of billet and rollers. I don't know why they quit making them because the design is fantastic. It's invisible in the front, but it takes a helluva pounding I made sure of that. Here's the pictures:

Thanks for the compliment, Gub Ni. I've jumped it, but nobody seems to be taking pictures when I go blasting at a hill for some reason. I just see their asses. I'll see what I can do, but I'll have to call the Bronco "Dumbo" after that ride, since it's nearly a thousand pounds heavier than it was when I jumped it last.

But I love Mauraders truck. One of these days I'll make it up for a wheelin trip either to Tellico or Uhwarrie. Only been to Uhwarrie once, about 3-4 years ago. Awesome fun.
What neighborhood in Charlotte were those pics taken at?

Ballentyne Country Club. That was the our old neighborhood. My mom and sister moved just down the street to a townhome development because our house was HUGE and times were getting hard because my father passed away so the house was un-necessary since Ballentyne is a very rich neighborhood (With people from the Panthers ect) living there, although I am sure you already know that. Sorry I ramble :brownbag

Back in the 5 lug wheel days in my 78 on a trip through a rock trail in the Tillamook State Forest in Oregon. This was a new trail and nothing fullsize had been through it yet. The Bronco took some substantial damage, but got me home.

The only trail with 2 black diamonds-

And a warning sign-

I'd say **** it
Everyone else did say that Mike. But they were happy to spot, take pics, and watch the destruction. Out of the 6 rigs I was there with I was the only one to go. I caved in both doors, busted the glass in the passenger door, tore the exhaust off, bent the tie rod, broke both front axleshafts, crushed the steering damper shock thing, and punched in the 33 gallon gas tank so it would only hold 20 gallons. All in all, it was a great time.
The next weekend I went wheelin again.

*EDIT* You might notice my friends doing a little more than watching, they helped out when I high centered, and winched my busted rig the last 30 feet of the trail when I had no front shafts left. They're great people.

Gets better with age....and each dent always has a story to tell.

Look at my paint
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/193686/fullsize/000_0202.JPG
When I bought this truck it was freshley painted, not a scratch or a flaw on it. But driving it through too many bushes has pinstriped the hell out of the sides of it. Its not really dented much, but still I cant get that shit to buff out.
Its very noticable when its washed and clean.

Realy the only dent is the big one on the tailgate, and thats from too many engines slamming againjst it. Theres minor dings here and there too, but nothing major

Here's some pics from the mud drags when my 78 was an XLT with the original 2 tone paint, functional AC, 400 4bbl, Hedman hedders, 35"BFG's, 4.10 geared stock axles with Lockrights. It was my trusty hunting rig that went everywhere. It was even decent looking.

Wasn't it nice?

That's probably a coincidence. I'll watch the video when I have a couple hours to kill sometime, but there's always a faster lane at mud drag events. It usually changes from side to side several times throughout the day as rigs tear em up. If the guy who went before you kept it straight that seems helps more than anything.

More old pic's of my 78:

Going up a steep hill I had a mechanical failure (engine died, brakes went to the floor), and I ended up going backwards fast, so I steered it into the trees to avoid the rigs behind me. Luckily I didn't make it to the trees, just high centered on a berm. This incident made take things on the trail a little more seriously, and take better care of the running condition of my rig.
