View Full Version : new under hood lights
Fireguy50 07-24-2003, 10:57 PM I think Matt has done this on his truck and just now did it myself.
What a great idea, especially if you have dual batts and don't really worry about leaving lights on for hours at a time.
This has made my shinny hood tape linner a real need. I did it to make the hood look better. then it seemed to make the light reflect into my engine compartment better. Now it really helps distribute light equally in the hood :thumbup
I just used the $7 tractor utility lights, I like them if they last under my hood I'll re-use them for rock lights under the truck
PICS :thumbup

I'll try ot get a night time shoot, but can't say the dig camara will agree with that idea :shrug
Damager 07-24-2003, 11:00 PM That's a great idea bud! :thumbup
gearrat 07-24-2003, 11:02 PM the is a really cool idea :thumbup
Fireguy50 07-24-2003, 11:14 PM night pic. Hard to tell with the flash, but its a huge light difference. I'll be turning these on every time i open the hood, with the aluminiminiminim tape on the hood my head doesn't block the light. even if I have the trouble light these will now be on every time i pop the hood :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

And I'm sure Matt, 81bronk36 did this before me. I just improved on the idea :beer
Steve83 07-24-2003, 11:21 PM I added 2 of the stock reel lights to mine; one on each side of the hood. They have a tilt switch inside, so they come on automatically when the hood opens, their cords are ~30' long so they'll reach the back of the truck, and the bulb holder is magnetic so it'll stick wherever you need it. They're made by ITT and can be found in mid-80s XLTs and some Jeep Cherokees. They don't put out anywhere near THAT much light, but they're pretty handy.
Fireguy50 07-25-2003, 01:41 AM yeah I like lots of light. I had to change a dizzy gear once in a -20 wind chill parking lot with a mag light. Never Agian!
I can't wait to get 6-8 of those lights under my truck. I'll wire them up to the alarm so the light up the ground something fierce. then a manual switch to be used as off road lights, or to repair drive line stuff
Crazed 07-25-2003, 01:58 AM Those are the same ones I run underneath, they work fine.
Fireguy50 07-25-2003, 02:04 AM good, I saw your pics. I might aim mine at the body to help deflect the light out. i might find something better in my Groute catalog. Some kind of flood light.
I'll keep stealing ideas, improve them, and call them my own :D
allcruisen 08-21-2003, 01:38 PM And I tawt I had the most lights on my truck in this site. 49 and counting. I just might have to add some of them to catch up to you guys. :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

scheki 08-21-2003, 10:33 PM Good idea. Just need to do some write-ups for each idea.

NOBS! 08-22-2003, 03:40 AM I did the same to mine. I only have one though.
Fireguy50 08-22-2003, 03:47 AM the side lights come on with the washer noozel lights. My efforts to pimp the Bronco in a colloge town. :brownbag

Actually Im waiting for inner fenders before I actually hook them up. Im waiting on my lift before I put in the inner fenders, its a visious cycle. And yes I think you may have improved on my idea since I was gonna mount them on the fender wells and that hood idea seems a lot better.
TTBlows 08-22-2003, 03:37 PM Flamerguy, you're rainbow :goodfinge
:beer
Fireguy50 08-22-2003, 07:53 PM Holy hell, oh, $hit, my big gay uncle Keith found me in the closet agian. Damit!
You'll be jelous the next time you need to fix under the hood in the dark. Those sissy corded lights don't have anything over my 100watts of engine lighting :goodfinge
allcruisen 08-22-2003, 09:09 PM Fireguy50....Yes they do count as 1 though. Where do you have your side LED on your truck???????????????????
Fireguy50 11-24-2003, 04:08 PM finally mounted a switch for these lights over by the battery:

Marauder 11-24-2003, 05:34 PM humm how good would a black light be under the hood. I thought that would add a cool touch but i wonder if it will really help light stuff up?:shrug
Fireguy50 11-24-2003, 08:36 PM I would say no. Personally I have 50watt back up bulbs in my factory tail lights.
but what you see above is 100watts of lighting for under $20.
It was easy to mount and has been very nice at night.
axaviere 11-25-2003, 03:28 AM geez, where can you get cheap lights. i looked in JCWhitney, harbor freight & walmart as well as the tractor & farm stores. any ideas? the stores have mini LED clearance lights in red yellow & blue. i want to light the inside with blue or red lights for night running. them tractor lights with the plastic guards are cool but i cant find them anymore.
seboh 11-25-2003, 08:39 AM You're not looking very hard, then.... ;) NAPA and any of the farm stores should have them. They have a whole wall full at the NAPA here.
Fireguy50 11-25-2003, 12:50 PM They are cheap Grotte lights. Spent $7 each on them
Crazed 11-25-2003, 01:15 PM Yup, my rock lights came from napa....but my underhood halogens came from wal-mart...on sale for $9.99
stangmata 11-25-2003, 02:05 PM All you need to do now is put blue bulbs in it and drive it around at night with the hood shut.
Then the college kids would REALLY think that your cool:goodfinge
