STUPID 08-08-2005, 09:34 PM Just getting nominated for FOTM is awesome.
Here's the evolution of my daily driver. It's not nearly as wild as alot of the others, but it has to get me to work everyday. Sorry all I have is a bunch of poser pics. I assure it's wheeled plenty hard :twotu:
Here it is when I pulled it out of a friends yard. I've been around this truck most my life, it was my buddy's dads. I used to ride around in it when I was a little kid

cr69ml 08-08-2005, 11:36 PM So far I like muddinmike but I will wait to see others pics to vote. Any more Flexin pics like before and after ttb to sas.
Most of you have no idea who I am, so first a little back ground. Wheeling for me is literally a family event. My wife and boys both look forward to every trip we can schedule. Unfortunatley, I'm a broke SOB, so I dont have big-azz tires, motors, axles, etc. But what I do have is a heavy right foot and little fear of mud-probably not my best traits. This truck was my DD for almost a year until I could assign it to trail duty. So far, its only got a pair of full length headers, true dual exh., and a drop-in K&N. Here's my "BBT" as i've come to call it.(Big Brown Turd)
Just before I got it. I know your impressed by the 225/75/15's and trend setting running boards.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/232490/fullsize/Appy's%20bronco.jpg
Soon afterwards, it got a little better with a tire and wheel swap. Yes, 33x12.50-15's on 15x8's WILL fit on a stock '87!

Took both sway bars off before our first wheeling trip and had to get a baseline flex measurement.

Marauder 08-08-2005, 11:44 PM Wow Larston, that looks really nice. Nice work. I havent seen much of your "Bronco". Personally I like that rootbeer color of the cab. I think you should paint the sheet metal that color.

Larston 08-09-2005, 12:10 AM A few more, more or less in chronological order. Since I'm generally the photographer, I don't get many pictures of my own rig. And most of what I take is tech, which I'll get to later :D

Bluebeast 08-09-2005, 07:09 PM vote goes out early in the game... bet you cant guess who?
Dustin 08-09-2005, 10:42 PM Larston got my vote
johnski 08-09-2005, 11:01 PM I'm sorry, but if you launch a rig with 42's in the air in front of a screaming crowd, you got my vote. Nice work muddinmike.
AKBearMoose 08-09-2005, 11:25 PM This isn't anywhere near as cool as Mike's Jump...I about lost the wife's new camera since the water had risen while gathering trash at the Knik area clean up...(Crappy video except the camera catching)... :doh0715: I had flooded the engine after hitting the shallow crossing too fast...

Larston 08-10-2005, 12:56 AM Thought I'd throw out a couple of the mods done on my rig.
Of course, any good build needs to start with axles
1987 Dana 60 front axle with leaf spring conversion. Front suspension uses stock Bronco rear springs with custom hangers and shackles. The axle has 5.13 gears, an ARB locker with braided stainless air lines and mechanical air switch, 35 spline alloy outers with drive flanges, forged spicer u-joints, and stock inner axles for now. High steer was added shortly after this picture was taken:

1985 D70U rear axle with 5.13 gears and a Detroit.

Click here for a writeup on my front axle install (http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34056&highlight=leaf+swap+clear)
Next up the line comes a 203/205 doubler setup with a Jed's Machining adapter. The 205 has been twin sticked for individual tcase output control. The shifter is a custom triple stick setup coming through the stock floor shift hole.
Doubler install writeup here (http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45488)

For the transmission, I'm using a stock wide ratio T-18 with a Luk heavy duty clutch. The engine is a completey rebuilt 302, 0.030" over, with all new internals, Comp Cams Extreme Off Road dual pattern cam, and topped off with a 1986 Mustang 5.0HO Intake and fuel rail set. The remainder of the fuel system is a Megasquirt computer and driver board with a Bosch heavy duty fuel pump and Aeromotive high flow filter. The entire system is plumbed with Aeroquip AQP hose and fittings. Also tucked under the hood is an F-350 dual diaphragm brake booster and master cylinder.

http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/227163/fullsize/LeftInnerFenderTop.jpg
Finally, where the rubber meets the road I'm running 42-15.50X16.5 Super Swamper TSL's on recentered Hummer rims with cutdown runflats. The centers are stamped 3/8" thick modular centers normally used in heavy duty aftermarket wheels.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/198774/fullsize/TireFullSide.jpg
To top things off, I also have onboard air using the stock York AC compressor and a power steering cooler/filter system.
chambiec1 08-10-2005, 03:33 AM Larston... how much lift are you running?
EDIT: And did you move the axle forwardduring the SAS? Did you have to move the rear axle back with the doubler?
Larston 08-10-2005, 09:23 AM Larston... how much lift are you running?
EDIT: And did you move the axle forwardduring the SAS? Did you have to move the rear axle back with the doubler?
The lift is a total of about 7 inches, it's about the same as my D44 SAS. The front axle is forward about an inch and a half, but will probably move further forward this winter when I make a couple more changes. The rear axle is still in the stock location, but I'm thinking of rotating the spings to put the short side of the arch in the rear which would move the rear axle back a couple inches.

Oh and you guys with the BIG rigs let some of us little guys catch up :notworthy
I dont have any of the "cool" mods like some of you guys, mine are upgrades after I destroyed a part. First one was the rear bumper
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/223506/fullsize/Gen.%20Sam's%20022005%20006.jpg
Only engine mods I've done so far are full length headers after the manifolds cracked into pieces, and a K&N. Leaving it stock until it gives out. Gonna rebuild and swap in the 390FE out in the shed when the time comes. I did fab up some extended radius arms for my TTB tho. No pics yet, but I'll get some tom. :paper:
Big Wurmb 08-11-2005, 04:34 AM [QUOTE=appy]And yes, that sammy pulled me out, several times that day.

As far as mods go, I've got plenty planned. Meet my donor truck:
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/199244/fullsize/trucks%20001.jpg
Both axles and the transfer case will get swapped into the bronco, hopefully within the next year. Just waiting on enough $$$ to rebuild them properly so I only have to do it once. Got a spool for the 9" already, and the front will probly get a lunchbox for the time being.

Appy, just bring that truck up to me...then we can go wheel and I'll buy you a plane ticket home.....J/K...that will be a nice addition to your Bronco
Thanks man, but that picture is quite decieving. The cab is totally shot, only the rust is holding it together right now. The rest of the body is pretty much the same. I've had this truck for 12 years now, so I know what it'll take to make it road worthy again. After much soul searching, I decided I dont have the time and money to devote to such a project. Decided it will live on through the bronco.
I promised some muddin pics, so here's a couple. Enjoy.

It was going to be a hitch, but most of the guys I run with are in heeps therefore if I get stuck...they cant get me out without a double-line so I made it a shackle for the snatch block...I also left it out far enough for mounting an M12,000

Mike, what are you gonna do this time to "vote whore" to get my vote. You launched your truck last time you ran in FOTM against me and it almost worked so what now? :scratchhe Is your rig rolling yet?

Thought I'd throw out that I do all my own work except major machining, and I do 99.9% of it by myself. It's nice to have the flexibility to change whatever I want whenever I want. Of course, it means I screw up a lot of stuff, too. But it's all a learning experience and I love doing it. When you play software engineer all day, it's nice to get home and get your hands dirty on a great project.

AKBearMoose 08-13-2005, 11:56 PM Thought I'd throw out that I do all my own work except major machining, and I do 99.9% of it by myself. It's nice to have the flexibility to change whatever I want whenever I want. Of course, it means I screw up a lot of stuff, too. But it's all a learning experience and I love doing it. When you play software engineer all day, it's nice to get home and get your hands dirty on a great project.
I agree 99% (the 1% is because I'm a Project Engineer not a software Eng'r)...LOL...
The homefab statement would have earned you my vote had I not given it to Davids78bronco...if he or I weren't in this...you'd have gotten my vote...That is why rig's become special to the men and women who build them their own way... :notworthy
Speaking of home fab...just started by swing away tire carrier...pics to come later...heavy duty spindle with 3x3x 3/16" tubing...de-sta-co latching system...Back to the garage...bye for now...
Vote For AKBearMoose for saving a Bronco from being a cobbled up pavement princess!
godless 08-14-2005, 03:07 AM I will vote when the home page gets updated with the previous winners. I am not aware of any problems but I think that the winners deserve the home page attention as much as the others.

Larston 08-14-2005, 06:09 PM What kind of things do you plan for body protection?
Exo maybe?
It will most likely be exo. I'm not big on exo cages, but it may make the most sense for plans I have to tube the front and tie in the rear. It's definitely getting rock sliders with cab corner protection within the next few weeks.
Larston 08-14-2005, 06:18 PM A couple quick shots of the finished flatbed:

XLTbeast 08-14-2005, 06:46 PM larston bed/cab swap looks awsome :thumbup did you ever think about putting the filler neck in the bed like some older trucks. has the little door to pop up. just think it would be neat.

That's one of a zillion little things I need to deal with yet. It'll probably either get incorporated into the roll cage when I do that, or get replaced with a fuel cell which won't have a filler neck. A significant side effect of doing so much fab is that no matter how much you try to think of things, a lot of stuff falls through the cracks :banghead After the work I've done on the Tronco since last Christmas, I have a whole new respect for those who can build a buggy from scratch. :notworthy
chambiec1 08-15-2005, 12:19 AM Larston... is the tube work just going to be on the front part of the rig or are you going to do a fastback-style exo-cage on the rear, covering the bed up?

Larston, I really like that one picture of Hancock Pass. Very interesting, I wonder how it got like that. I would really like to see that in person :thumbup
Keep up the good work. We only have 91 votes! WE NEED MORE VOTES. 300 guys, 300 its not hard. Takes a couple of clicks and a few seconds to throw in your input!
Larston 08-15-2005, 09:34 AM Larston... is the tube work just going to be on the front part of the rig or are you going to do a fastback-style exo-cage on the rear, covering the bed up?
Planning to do a main hoop around the back of the cab, then tieing it into the frame right behind the cab (X) and extending it to the back of the frame to take some of the frame flex out. Probably put an X in the trailing tubes as well. Here's a thread on Pirate that has some good pics. (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=383379)
Since we didn't get to go wheeling last weekend like we'd planned, guess I'll show the reason why. Found a good little area in spring creek to play.
It pretty deep. Those are 35's on a 4" completely gone. Must have been a log or something on the other side, cause it couldn't climb up the other bank. This is the hole that ate my trans.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/228841/fullsize/101_0333.JPG
after 4 or 5 tries, decided to go as far as it would, and strap up from there.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/227789/fullsize/100_1716.JPG
After this, I lost 3rd and 4th gears. During our lunch stop, went to town to get some gas, and it wouldn't shift?! Had to tow it home, of course, but rode on it for 4 more hours anyway. Tranny shop(where it still sits) said the convertor went out sending a bunch of metal into everything. Clogging up the gov., and everything else.

chambiec1 08-16-2005, 01:12 AM Larston got mine. Mainly because he has a sweet rig, and also because I will be doing the same swap and will be able to use his tech to help me.
FordFilly 08-16-2005, 12:14 PM Oh my goodness, this is a tough pick this month. I see three very worthy rigs, one in particular will most likely get my vote again since I just might get a ride in it one day. Hint Hint!
Hey Colorado guys, after seeing some of those pictures, I have decided to visit your high mountain country next year, is this the best time of year to do that?
I'll let you all know when and maybe I'd get a chance to meet some of you. I might be riding my BMW motorcycle though, I want to get as far up the mountains as I can and my Bronco isn't ready for that yet.

Late July through early September is the best time to get into the high country, Memorial day through early November is good for lower elevation trails. Hope you can make it, it's worth the trip :D

noiser than the carpet and sound deadening stuff. however with the top off some headers going to flowmasters, and 40" swampers rolling down the free way it really doesn't matter one way or the other. The liner sprays out alot easier though :thumbup

kht428 08-19-2005, 03:13 PM More pics coming soon. Just got the truck packed and gettin ready to leave for Paragon this weekend. Can't wait it's only the second time I've gotten to go wheeling this summer.
:chili:
Well, since I wont be able to get any wheeling pics this weekend(freshly rebuilt tranny has to come BACK out:sore subject) I'll show off my extended rad arms.
Really was pretty simple, we had the 1.375" solid bar stock at the shop already. So I just had my machinist cut down one end to replicate the stock bushing/thread area, and drill and tap the other end to screw onto the stocker. Had the weld shop weld them together, and I boxed them in just for that extra bit of over-kill I like to engineer into everything. Onto the pics.
Might notice the only "bling" on my rig, new brake lines.

Larston 08-20-2005, 11:17 AM Thought I'd revisit the front D60 install. So much has changed since then that is seems like sooo long ago...
The way I got it. Two broken caliper brackets and one rusted out hub because it had sat open for a while. Bought it on Ebay from someone local and was able to go pick it up :rockon
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/166018/fullsize/D60FreshOffTruck.jpg
Yes, that little tire is what was on the Bronco when I bought it. The 42's were the primary motivator to install the D60.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/166026/fullsize/StockTo42.jpg
Leaf springs were the natural choice for suspension. I decided to use stock rear Bronco springs since they're nice and squishy.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/170809/fullsize/AxleSide.jpg
Since I'm not big on following convention, I decided to make my own hangers and shackles.

kwboom 08-20-2005, 12:52 PM Mike has the best built and the best pics, but Blown and Larson has done the most work and individual styling and I like that but I still need to see more pics ............so keep them comming guys :rockon :rockon :beer
Larston 08-20-2005, 01:28 PM Just wondering why you didn't put the shackle on the back of the spring?
It would probably be best to look at the God of Leaf Spring Suspension to see the full argument. The short answer is that the only reason to go rear shackle is for ride improvement. Rear shackle setups take a lot of planning to avoid severe caster angles, they require long slip driveshafts if you have any significant articulation, and pinion angles get really bad under power unless you have an antiwrap bar. With the front shackle, you avoid all of these problems (you still have to be careful about caster angle) at the expense of a slightly rougher ride. The front suspension on the Tronco will still get a lot more tweaking, including more travel, so the front shackle was the setup that made sense to me.
For most rigs, it's really a matter of personal choice. There are a lot of rigs on this site that do very well with rear shackle setups. I just chose not to go that way.

I got out to the local OHV area yesterday to give them a try. I also purchased some Staun air-down devices. Very nice to screw them on and let them do the work. I ran them at 10lbs and was amazed at the difference vs the 37" MTR's at 15lbs. They a little wider, a little taller, a little softer, and I can air them down more with the locks. I really dig 'em!
The OHV Area Pueblo Motorsports International has a flat track, paved road course, motocross track, dragstrip, and trails and tracks all over the place. Much of the stuff is two wheel drive hill climbs, but I have found three great obstacles in rocky ravine climbs and yesterday pioneered a fourth.

First time up with the new cab installed. This was also only the third trip with the one-ton running gear and doubled transfer case. It just keeps getting better.
Loading up for the trip. The rig runs great on the highway, but the dually gets two to three times the fuel mileage

The big obstacle on Crystal Mountain is The Quarry. This is an old quartz mine. It has one main trench that has three significant ledges in about 75 yards with around 150 feet vertical climb. The top ledge varies from a 6 foot vertical marble wall on the left to a 5 foot loose climb on the right. The Tronco handled it all with ease, up and down.

The lower ledge in The Quarry ranges from a 4 foot loose climg on the left to a 5 foot overhanging hard rock ledge on the right. The Tronco climbed the overhang with style, I didn't try to drive down that side :shocked

Crystal has a great place to check your flex. It's a heavily rutted section that gets good and firm in the summer so you can work through it without spinning tires.

Finally to the top. There's not much room here at 10,200 feet, just enough to fit three or four rigs. Couldn't find a position where the Aspens were out of the shot :twotu:

BigNorm 08-21-2005, 08:34 PM It would probably be best to look at the God of Leaf Spring Suspension to see the full argument.
Damn strait. My pinion angles are always right in line with the T case. Prevention is the best policy IMO when trying to avoid breakage. Not wheeling isn't an option!

I've been working with a buddy near Calgary, Alberta that drowned his in huge hole on one of his forest runs. He's having a helluva time getting everything cleaned out and working again. It's a big job to recover one that's been dunked, especially in super muddy water.

Larston 08-27-2005, 10:34 AM I'll wrap up with some non-rock crawling pics. I grew into rock crawling, or out of trail riding, depending on how you feel about both. The main reason to have the rig is still simply to get into the mountains and kick back.
First major stuck. Completely stock except for a set of 31" Swamper TSL's. Both bumpers hung on rocks, all four wheels off the ground under the water. Clutch and engine full of water (this was a surprising nose in). This is the single event that changed the Bronco. It cost me $2500 and a beautiful Honda Goldwing Interstate motorcycle to recover. 'Course, that included a new engine, clutch, lift kit, 36's on new wheels, etc :thumbup

I do get into a little snow. By the time the snow gets deep here, though, the forest service has closed all the roads so choices are pretty slim.

Sharing a little air after another beautiful day in the mountains :beer

A little trail maintenance with the Roosevelt National forest LEO. I try help the local 4X4 clubs out with trail maintenance and repairs. The Colorado Front Range population has nearly tripled in the last 20 years and trail damage is rampant. It's tough to keep the trails open these days.

As long as views like these still exist, and I can still climb into the truck to go see them, I'll be a 4 wheeler.

81Bronk36 08-27-2005, 01:05 PM Rochester Quadra Jet... 4 corner idle, can handle some pretty decent angles, but hard as hell to rebuild and tune.... oh ya and decently $$ IIRC
They mostly come on Chebbys
BigNorm 08-27-2005, 01:22 PM Damn cool pictures Larry. It seems we share similar attitudes on wheeling. :thumbup

Hell, I'd build a hundred Quadrajets before I'd build a Holley. QJets are easy :toothless They don't have 4 corner idle, though, just the front two, but almost everything else is adjustable including secondary metering and air valves. Ultra tunable, just different enough to take a little time to learn.

The challenge of extreme wheeling is where the adrenaline lies, but experiencing nature is the motivation :rockon

BrokeCuzWheelin 08-28-2005, 01:38 AM I voted muddinmike cause I've always loved his truck. Larston's rig is just as badass, though, so if he doesn't win I'm voting for him next time he's nominated.
