View Full Version : Rear Coils / Link or RA Setup?

I know SquattyD is supposed to be working on this, but I haven't seen any progress on it in awhile.. Has anyone else done a radius arm or link setup with coils on the rear? I've been feeling like getting creative, but would like to find something for reference, and see what kinds of results others have come up with.

I have considered it many times...but I can't find good enough data on coil spring strength to calc out the what is needed on a full size for the different planes of force...an FSB is the perfect candidate though, because geometrically it is an oversized YJ...

That said, I'm considering a very stout tri-link, with the rear arms at full length to an added crossmember at the t-case yoke...thus keeping the driveshaft on the same plane as the entire rear assembly...have been doing the math for like a month now:toothless When I get it done...(maybe by Christmas...LOL) I'm going to have the calcs verified by JD at M.O.R.E. :chili:

He;s referring to the chopped bronco in the link :) Also, the ttb was replaced with a D60.

I thought about going with radius arms on the rear with coil springs, but then I thought it would be pretty stupid when you could go with a 5 link or a triangulated 4 link instead.

Would you be able to use Bronco II coils?

that hacked bronco just looks strange... is that bed thing mounted to the frame? if so, is the frame articulated? is it just me or should the bed be tilted a little as it flexes? if not, the frame sure seems to be flexing alot cause that cab is twisted compared to the bed dealy... but it could just be me i guess

i would go with a triangulated 4 link. you wont have to deal with the stupid radius arm caps and lower buckets. and if you get coilovers in the future, you can just swap em im. it will be more expensive than a RA setup, and require more designing and planning, but i think its worth it.

i went with a ra setup because it cost me almost nothing, i didnt want leafs anymore, and i this design was so much simplier. ive heard a bunch of people say that rear ra setups suck, but then again, those people dont run rear ra setups. they know a guy, who knows a guy, who used to have a truck with it, and he didnt like it. the few people i actually got to talk to with them had no problems with them.

btw, there has been no progress because its all done...just the rest of truck is not. so it looks pretty nifty sitting there, i just dont know how it drives because the rest of the truck isnt ready yet.

so you actually have the rear radius arm setup done? i was curious about it cause i had a parts bronco with a complete front end on it and thought bout tryin to put it qaud shocks and all under the rear of my 79 but wasnt sure if it would work or if anyone else had tried it yet

From just looking at the link, the bronco that is twisted up. (I didn’t go through and read it)
But it looks like it has a calapiler (big bull dozer type that’s split in the middle and that’s how it turns) setup on it, were the rear is linked through a hitch thingy

ive done both a rear radius arm style suspension, and a triangulated 4 link now.

if you have the money, and time and patience to do the research, go with a 4 link. the actual work isnt that much harder. it just costs more money, and more time figuring out where to put each link.

I'm still debating on what to do with my bko... any suggestions?
Squatty, what was the difference in price between the 4-link and radius arm setup? I really need to find the simplest setup for the rear. I have been debating moving the rear axle back and sticking with leafs, but then I have thought of going coil in the rear... ugh... i'm not sure what to do...

Start with a running Bronco, for one. Then, learn to drive it, wheel it, and work on it. Then, after you feel you've mastered everything else, plan for the suspension modifcations

It does run. I know how to drive it, I am fairly ok at wheeling it, and I know how to work on it... I can do alot with my Haynes manual and some time.

with your haynes huh? You're still not ready to start F'ing with the suspension, yet

I knew that... but I always like to plan ahead on a project like this... helps me with organization and such.

Maybe i should not have said "like this"... something more along the lines of "I like to plan ahead for projects(like any project)" That was my mistake.

Squatty, what was the difference in price between the 4-link and radius arm setup?

radius arm...about $300 total or $200 without springs

link setup...about $1300 total or $800 without springs

John, do you have a break-down of your prices?

SquattyD
04-22-2006, 09:44 PM
sure:

radius arm setup:

arms, upper and lower buckets: free, had extras.
radius arm extension from stone crusher $90
flexxx joints from poly performance $80
metal, hardware, bushings, etc $50
used eb coil springs $75

4 link:

6 jonny joints w/ jam nuts and tube inserts $306
2 evolution heim joints w/ jam nuts and tube inserts $222
10 feet of 2" x .250" DOM @ $6 a foot $60
grade 8 hardware $60
misc metal for link mounts, crossmember and housing bridge, etc $100
+ air shocks or coilovers, havent decided yet.

Any reason you went with 6 of one, and 2 of the other? as opposed to all of one or the other, or half-n-half?

i was gonna go all evolution joints, but it was way out of budget. so i just got em for my axle lowers, so if i drag them over rocks or whatnot, they can take the beating.
