View Full Version : So I suck, but please explain this. Steering.
godless 08-18-2003, 12:35 PM OK< On this SAS can you please explain this steering set up.
I know I am kinda dumb when it comes to this so please if you know enlighten me.

He used a leaf sprung dana 44 which I am most interested in doing. I have been making a long list of notes, pics, part list, etc. but I can not understand how this steering linkage works..
Thank you in advance.
jermil01 08-18-2003, 12:38 PM They did a tie rod flip, probably to gain more steering clearance.
Scratch that, I looked at that again and realized that I have no idea what the hell I was talking about..:shrug :shrug
bigdave 08-18-2003, 01:48 PM What the hell?!
jermil01 08-18-2003, 01:49 PM Kind of looks photochopped..there seems to be stuff where it shouldn't be..:shrug
Crazed 08-18-2003, 02:02 PM It seems to he a "hi-steer convesion" but it looks kinda weird.

godless 08-18-2003, 02:10 PM Looking at the part list on the guys web page he used parts that would normally be for a Dodge (I think)
Here is the url for the parts list he used:
SAS Parts list (http://chrisb.users.superford.org/SAS_Parts_List.html)
Here is the url to his write up:
D44 Leaf sprung SAS (http://chrisb.users.superford.org/Solid_Axle_Swap.html)
The photo is NOT chopped or messed with in any way.
I emailed the guy and he couldnt really explain it to well he said that he had someone else do it.

its supposed to look like this....
but i think he mad a home made part to clear the springs. that much leverage would make me wonder about its strength.
ya, its called HI steer.
Dustin 08-18-2003, 04:10 PM yeah that is some kinda of high steer setup.
I dont think anyone makes a kit for the to ford D44, but not sure
godless 08-18-2003, 05:11 PM OK, well at least i am not the only one who is looking at this and thinking it is odd.
I was afraid that i would post this topic and people would start flaming me and calling me an idiot cuz i didnt know that the guy did this xyz, on the 49er jdsq 9er. :toothless :toothless
I really wanna do a leaf sprung swap, and NO track bar. Steering seems to be the real bitch in this case.
Oh and I kinda figured out a way around the crumple zone.
You can weld in some rebar, or other steel onto the leaf spring x-member to fill the void. The of course weld then piss out of it.
Kinda like in this pichttp://chrisb.users.superford.org/SAS_25.jpg
But i would make the frame attachment longer and put in rebar pieces kinda like vovovovo hope that makes sense.
BadassBronco 08-18-2003, 05:16 PM why not put factroy ford brackets on it?
godless 08-18-2003, 05:28 PM probably will, off of my friends f350.
I am going to try and match his f350 set up as close as possible since that is the only method of comparison for a straigh axle i have anyway (I know weak dude weak).
The steering on his is stock and is a little to odd to get onto the bronk unless i lift it like 8 or 9 inches.
The thing I have that i dont think your rig has is the stupid crumple zones on the frame. I have to have something in the grooves between the frame and the leaf spring x-member thingie that is in that last pic.
That is where the 1.5"- 2" (or however wide the frame is there) pieces of rebar come in.
NOBS! 08-18-2003, 07:00 PM That's funny. I was just at his work a couple hrs ago taking pics of that. :D
Hdpsd 08-18-2003, 10:41 PM i would call that a crossoversteering setup.
Hdpsd 08-18-2003, 10:52 PM ih yeah... since stupid fords **** up they lost picture.this guy (http://bigbroncos.superford.org/registry/vehicles/detail.php?id=64) had a picture with the spring hangers. I thinkhe said they cost like $20? from ford...
J-Roc 08-19-2003, 12:23 AM I recognize that pic to be Chris Bradley's rig. The knuckles are flat tops w/ the steering arm bought from places like Sky manufacturing. I saw some Ford flat tops on ebay a while back. They usually go for about $100-120. The arms on Sky were like $85 a piece. So what's the problem? :toothless
godless 08-19-2003, 11:33 AM Yup clear as mud.
What is a flat top (Besides the hair do)?
Got anymore pics, links, etc?
jermil01 08-19-2003, 11:43 AM Is a flat top like a king pin??:shrug

NO!
go search on pirate, or yahoo....its a machined flat spot on the kunckles with 3-4 holes drilled and tapped to accept an arm.....
soem stock vehucles have it. IE older chevy d44;s....
godless 08-19-2003, 07:14 PM I cant search on something when i dont know what to look for.
Still clear as mud to me.
I would really need to see better pics.
So Badass since you seem to be the know it all can you post better pictures of what Chris B did with his steering on his SAS?
NOBS! 08-19-2003, 07:40 PM better pictures of what Chris B did with his steering on his SAS? what you see is what you get.Instead of the drag link mounting to the tie rod it's moved to the top of the knuckle via steering arm.
don't know what else to tell you to help you understand :shrug
search highsteer,crossover,flat tops....
godless 08-19-2003, 08:04 PM Thanks 2bit. I know it is probably clear to mostof you experienced guys out there. I appreicate all your help and sorry that I am the stupid one, but I am really just trying to learn.
I will keep on my searches to see what I can find.
to me it looks like the guy used a dropped pitman arm off of the bottom of his upper ball joint, then connected that to his tie rod. When I first seen that pic I was like WTF???
What I need to see is behind the thing that he linked his drag link to. Maybe if I saw that it would make more sense to me.:shrug

It's a half done high steer job. He has'nt flipped the lower one yet.:twak
NOBS! 08-19-2003, 09:18 PM It's a half done high steer job. He has'nt flipped the lower one yet. maybe you're blind...but with the current lift on those leafs there's no room.
godless 08-19-2003, 10:12 PM http://www.sn-fab.com/steering/steer01.jpg
Thanks again bud, your the man.
It makes much more sense now.
J-Roc 08-20-2003, 02:06 AM Beerman, the trac bar is used to "center" the axle under the truck. With leaf springs, it's not required to have one, but it does help limit bumpsteer. I know cuz we installed an 8.5" lift on our Ex and we have no tracbar. When you hit a dip or bump, the axle wants to wander and uses the steering link ( that connects from the pass. side knuckle to the pitman arm) as a trac bar, which makes the steering kinda sketchy when goin 65 on highways with alot of potholes/dips/bumps. To me, bottom line would be that if your going to use your rig mainly for wheelin and limited
on-road use, go without the tracbar cuz you wont really know the difference. And if you plan to use your rig as a daily driver and weekend warrior, go with it...
godless 09-03-2003, 03:16 PM J-Roc dude i think you missed the other post.:toothless
