View Full Version : Couple of garage space savers

Not sure if this fits here guys and I won't be offended if'n it gets moved, so here goes;

Been hurtin' for space in the garage lately so I asked my old Pappy what he'd do (great mind for storage and space utilization).

The problem was I had 5 five gallon buckets, full of tall stuff that were taking up a pile of floor space and stabbing anyone who walked by.

He came up with two ideas that gave me piles mo' room;

http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/268522/fullsize/IMG_0005.JPG (http://www.supermotors.org/vehicles/registry/showmedia.php?id=268522&original=1)

The simple 4 compartment box is 4 feet deep and keeps stuff seperated (whole lot more to go in yet). By hanging 8' X 4' sheets of plywood(by light chains) the whole width of the double door I picked up a pile of storage in otherwise dead unuseable space.

Thanks Pappy, brilliant as usual

Good way to make some useable space out of a wasted area. How close does the garage door get to it when its opened?

Probably 3" below the shelf and less away from the eyelet threads. Doesn't sag though as we put the chains every 4 feet.

There's a pile of useable room up there now @ 16' X 4' and nearly 30" high.

I've got an 8' door on one side of my garage with 10' walls. That idea would sure work for me :thumbup

Probably be the cat's @$$ for you

I don't store anything up there that I need on a daily basis, that stuff gets stored where I can reach it.

The other great idea (I ought to get a few photos of) was to open up the attic opening, above the garage, so i could get big stuff into.

All I did was run some sheeting down the center run and use the sides, between the trusses to stash stuff in like bins.

I would do that, but my door comes about 4" from the ceiling in the garage whan its opened.
Sometimes having the garage all finished off sucks. My old place had rafters up there and I was always hanging stuff everywhere on them

Hilarious... I got the same thing in my garage, except its a 10 gallon steel bucket. That aluminum angle hurts!

Heres the newest pic of the storage place, its almost done, I need more plywood and 2 more 2x4's, power and then a light above the work bench. I see there is some room above my garage door!

Yes, there's definately enough space above your door to do the same thing. I can't see the total height, but it looks like you may have more height than I had to work with.

Everything extra thing you can put up there is one less thing taking up room on the floor, IMO.

Your garage is looking good so far.

Ya I have a ton of storage. Im gonna move all my parts from the metal one to the wood, since its harder to get to, and I dont have to go riffling threw it all that often, then ill move all my wire, hoses, belts, connectors etc. to the metal shelves.

I can see tons of spots to put shelves that will be up and out of the way. I have more room to work with now then I used to, and we can pull the Taurus in and open the doors up almost all the way up. Our other garage couldnt even fit the car in and open the doors so it was all mine.

its 21" from the roof to the the top of the springs/tracks and 27" from roof to the track that the door actually rides on.

I did something similar with overhead storage, but I bought mine from Home Depot. They work really, really well. I also have used just about every bit of usable wall space.

The overheads do not interfere with the garage door. I have also been thinking about opening the roof in the small garage to gain access to the rafters for additional overhead storage.

The main garage right side, viewed from the kitchen door:

My accessible storage. Electronics and other goodies are in the cabinet. I keep all my camping gear and other things I use often on the rack shelves.
http://www.broncoholics.com/support/files/peteyg/20051127175354_left_side_shelves.jpg

I put up a bunch of wall cabinets when I had to suck my 10x20 storage unit back into the garage. You can also see how I use most of the available wall space. The Cadillac usually sits in that space, but I think it's going to wind up being my daughter's, since she can't afford another car and the one she had burned up. All that junk on the floor is what I was storing in the car.

More overhead storage. I just pulled down the Christmas stuff. Usually it is packed to the ceiling.
http://www.broncoholics.com/support/files/peteyg/20051127175436_right_side_overhead.jpg

This is my shop. Every bit of usable space is used. The open space is where I park my Jeep.
http://www.broncoholics.com/support/files/peteyg/20051127175529_single_wide_outward.jpg

My garage is kinda unique. It's a 2+1, but instead of the side garage being detached, they are connected, creating a 15x6 dead space that was perfect for my workshop. Since we bought the house as new construction, I had the builders put an extra 100 amps on the wall there: 50 amps of 110 and 50 amps of 220.

Despite the fact that I have so much stuff in the garage, I can STILL fit 3 cars in my 3-car garage. I'm very proud of that.

Pretty nifty looking wire units alright. Thought about going along the walls, but I've got other ideas involving pegboard all the way to the 10 foot ceiling. Got a couple of bikes hung like that and grass seed spreader, pressure washer, leaf blowers, etc to the power of 3.

You've got more than enough to make it worth your while. The four foot depth is really handy for larger items.

If in the future I ever build my own house I'll probably do a 2 car and have another 2 car where your 1 car is. Then I'd have a 24' by 24' work area between the 2 where you really couldn't park anything at.

wish my garage was bigger(dont we all!!!) I have low ceilings and not much room on either side of the door so finding storage is difficult.

notice my door to roof clearance. I have extended the shelves from what you see in the pic to go the full length of that wall. It does help but I still find I need more storage. I just releized how packed my garage was in that pic. its a hell of alot better now :toothless
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/240697/fullsize/P9040201a.JPG

I can get my bronco AND F150 in my 3car which Im proud of. my 3rd car is stricly used for a work area. sure they are shoehorned in there but they fit. the bronco rubs the roof pulling in and the f150 has to just about touch the wall in front to get the door closed. Then you can hardly walk between then but they do fit! not practical so they dont get parked in there at the same time.

Heh. The Caddy IS touching the wall. I have to kiss the wall or I can't squeeze by to get to the other side of the garage. That's the only downer. Since my daughter took the Caddy I don't know what to do with all the room. I kinda hope she keeps it...

When the 'Burb is parked in there, the front bumper touches the wall and the garage door only just barely clears it.

We grabbed our neighbors doors from their house when they were re-doing it. Thick old school wood doors work well too.

Don't make em' like anymore do they ?

I slapped up some more shelving to replace the old thin stuff I had. At 16 feet long these suckers will double the shleving I had there;

nice! i can't build anything onto my shop since i rent it, but here is whati did to solve my problems,
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/269249/fullsize/100_0885.JPG
i got that brown cabinet and that white cabinet for free long time ago, by the brown cabinet i got a bolt bin draw deal with assorted stuff in it. I built a small table to hold it up 3 fts off the ground and i made shelfs out of that area. then that big 4x8 bench that can handle 2 460 on top of that thing if i wanted to set it up there.plus the shelf under the top. the other side of the shop is still a mess but not much i can do for it cause it is stuff that has to stay on the ground. like electric wheel chair, rocking chair that is barely staying together and a HUGE evaporator air conditioner that is brand new only used 3 month. and trannys. trust me it is just a mess.

And the lower floor of the house would be half garage, but at least from the front it wouldn't look like it.

I remember a Valvoline commercial from a few years ago where the camera is panning down the street looking at all these tract homes. Then it comes to a house where the garage is twice as big as the house and says "You can always tell the car guy's house."

That's always kinda been my ideal...

Back in the early 80s just before I bought my first house

The real estate agent found me an old WWII veteran's house with a 43' X 38' workshop/garage out back. It was one of those real small houses on a big lot and even though it was only 30 something thousand I passed on it.

I drive by there every once in a while. Some smarter guy bought it, razed the house and garage and turned it into a keyhole cresent and built nearly a dozen tall skinny townhouses on it.

There is a reason I'm not rich

it is a airplane hanger, it is big enough for three trucks to fit in. I am only paying $100 a month. look around for a airplane strip and ask if they wouldn't mind making extra money. some do some don't.

that side of the shop is a bout a 14x10 square and the other side is the same. then i got the long center of the garage which is about 14x20 so 14x40 square feet which is , 560.

Thats only 2 1/2 times the price of a 10x12 storage spot around here. Does it have electricity for that price (220 as well??)

I've been looking for aircraft hangers for a long time. Here in California they go for much, much more, and many fields have a "you must own an airplane" requirement.

100 bucks a month is a killer deal for a 3 car garage/workshop. Around here a 1.5 car equivalent storage until is 200 a month....i need to stop by some aircraft hangers soon

Cody

i got electricity but no 220. they pay bill. there is a airplane hanger down the road, they got shops for $75 a month same deal but maybe 20 or 30 sqft smaller. plus these people that i rent from, I think are trying to get rid of us hotrodders, so might be moving to the cheaper shop either way. the other shop could care less what ya do as long as you don't make a huge mess over there.

House a model airplane, say it likes lots of room. :D

I got y'all beat on too much stuff in the garage. The rafters are full, and the cleanest we have ever had it is to barely fit a Contour in the garage. Van did fit for a little while, but that lasted about a week.

Here's how much crap dad has:
My parents split up, mom took most of her stuff/stuff she wanted, and hasn't even half-filled the cubic-foot space of a storage shed. But with the stuff she has over at grandma's and my little brother's, they could fill it about 3/4 of the way. Dad has the garage, attic, a work room, and various other places he keeps his stuff. He's a big-time pack-rat. That's one reason mom left him, but not a main one. The fact he can't clean anything up would be one.

So ya, got a boat we haven't taken out in about 5 years, and various other junk we haven't ever used, like sheets of plexiglass that have been there for over 10 years. Every magazine he's ever owned, and two copies of any free ones. We clean the garage up, but never stays clean for long. But organization is a big thing. I'd love to see that garage cleaned up. "You cleaned the garage? Well, thanks a lot... now I'll never find my stuff." :banghead :twak
