View Full Version : ATTN: DOM Steering People
lightnin 12-08-2005, 01:15 PM I have some 1.5" OD 3/8" wall dom tubing that I cut to length and took to the machine shop. They brought it back and said $80. I was like that seems ok so before I paid it I checked they tapped both right hand thread. I told him this was wrong I said 1 right and 1 left hand thread. So I cut him another peice of my tubing and gave it to him to try again. He called me and said he could get it done for $214. HOLY CRAP!!! BRING MY TUBING BACK TO ME. Sorry had to vent a bit.
Who here has done or had theirs done. I am looking for a place to bore and tap this for me for a reasonable price besides $200. If you know of a place that has done yours for a reasonable price and can hook me up I can ship my tubing cut to lenght to you with money if you could drop it at the machine shop for me. Let me know any ideas. I have to have this done. Hopefully for less than above.
Dangling_Dave 12-08-2005, 02:28 PM Contact Lars (Larry Stien) I think that he has a source but we are in Colorado so shipping will be some $$.

lightnin 12-08-2005, 03:17 PM Thanks Dave. Is Lars his username on FSB? I appreciate it.

I can probably help you too John, but that is a total PITA to have to ship your DOM somewhere so that some azz wipe won't rip you off. You must have someone local that will treat you right...I've said this before...don't go directly to a machine shop. I went to my local 4WD shop that used to do fab stuff for me, and they told me the 4WD shop they get their stuff from. That shop pays a machinist to do this for them. My guess is he is doing this afterhours for some extra $$. You can buy the dang left hand thread tap (or whichever one again is the 'spensive one) for just under a $100 as I recall. The guy I use already has an assortment of taps, so he is likely charging me some % of what the tap costs vs. me paying for the entire thing. The DOM I used (1.125 x .188 or .25) tapped L/R was $55/ea. piece as I recall, inclusive of cost of DOM.
I won't be able to get to this right away though, if you need help. With xmas and everything, and taking a trip for new years to Denver to see a female friend:chili:
Dangling_Dave 12-08-2005, 03:46 PM Crud, guess the brain is not working today, he uses larston, not sure how I botched it...

Dangling_Dave 12-08-2005, 03:50 PM Hey shoot me a PM when you get to Denver and I will see if we can arrange a mini-get together for us FSB's down here. Rob (ZoZo) is pretty easy to get a hold of and so is Brian (crackhead)... We can grab a beer (pop for me) and shoot the $hit.

dc would love to man! However, the female friend hookup is going to likely be occupying all my time. we've known each other for awhile, but this will be our first "get together" so as much as I'd like to grab a beer and shoot the sheett with you guys, this play time is much more on my mind, and likely will be my sole focus for the 4-5 days I'm there. It's been several years since the divorce ya know. me horny.
now back to your regularly scheduled programming.....
lightnin 12-08-2005, 04:23 PM Sent ya a PM Shadofax. Thanks for the help guys.
plug ugly 12-08-2005, 04:38 PM use bungs
lightnin 12-08-2005, 04:40 PM Thanks. More info. Where? How Much? Do I just drill out my Tubing, put them in, weld them up and go?
Dangling_Dave 12-08-2005, 06:31 PM Bungs are a great option, would have suggested it but he was asking for taping resources. When I go hi-steer that is what I will use. I even got the bungs, just not the $$ for a hi-steer arm.

use bungs
redwagon 12-08-2005, 06:33 PM . me horny.

lightnin 12-08-2005, 06:34 PM Hmmm. I wonder.
Larston 12-08-2005, 06:42 PM If you send it out, I bet you'll end up paying as much as if you'd just bought a complete link. A likely reason for the guy to charge that much to do the job is because he'd have to buy the left hand tap. It's pretty standard practice in machine shops, charge the customer for tooling, then keep the tooling. That's why I don't hesitate too often when buying expensive tools, at least I have them when the job is done :toothless
Not sure where in Arizona you are, but that state is one of the rockcrawling capitals of the country. I bet if you dig around a bit you can find someone local who has the tools and will do it for a reasonable price.
lightnin 12-08-2005, 06:43 PM LOL AR is Arkansas. Not really the Rockcrawling Capital of the World. lol.
Anyone have problem with bungs? Plug is that what your running? Dave where did you get yours. I didn't see them on bulletproofsteering.com and wfoconcepts.com has them listed but have to call for price.
lightnin 12-08-2005, 06:45 PM Larston what do you charge to get it done?
Dangling_Dave 12-08-2005, 06:55 PM Here is a good source of steering part, www.poisonspyder.com , here is a link that might work for thier bungs
https://www.spydercustoms.com/index2.php
When I do mine I will drill a few holes in the DOM and do plug welds to go with the welds on the end.
Where at in Arkansas?

lightnin 12-08-2005, 07:00 PM Central Arkansas. I will check the link out. Thanks Dave.
Dangling_Dave 12-08-2005, 07:03 PM Been a few years since I was in Arkanasas, I moved some friends out to Havana in the early 80's. They bought a huge chicken farm. Took me a while before I would eat chicken after that :)

Central Arkansas. I will check the link out. Thanks Dave.
GearHead 12-08-2005, 08:54 PM bluetorchfab.com has the bungs too.
thats who i got all my stuff from. their prices were very reasonable, and they seemed like real nice guys.
they are in dothan alabama, so shipping wont kill ya.
BigNorm 12-08-2005, 09:03 PM Talk to Trevor at WFO. http://www.wfoconcepts.com/ He did my links for $75 each and corrected a mistake quickly when one was made covering the expense of shipping himself. I wasn't happy a mistake was made but it's nice to know there's honest business people out there who will go out of there way to make it right.
However, If you've got the DOM already I'd say weld bungs too.

I don't have a problem with them, it might be easier for you, and if the vehicle is not a daily street driver, I'd say go for it. The preference IMO is always a direct tap, no weld.
lightnin 12-08-2005, 09:38 PM It is not a daily street driver. Mainly just around local occasionally. Deer hunting, trail riding, Bad weather rig. And a back up vehicle.
badass1tonf100 12-08-2005, 10:16 PM i had shaffer do mine there outta virigina

John, let me know what you decide, but really from what you're saying, don't go blowing money...if you can buy plugs cheaply and have them properly welded, that is what I would do vs. the PITA of shipping this stuff and having it tapped. :thumbup

My mistake, I though I saw AZ :twak
Still, there are a ton of shops in Oklahoma building heavy duty trail rigs. Not exactly local, but not halfway across the country, either. Two biggies that come to mind are Sam's Offroad in Tulsa and Wagner Machine in Haskell. At least shipping wouldn't kill you if you couldn't make the drive.
I got my links from Offroad Design. I don't think they'll machine your stock, but they might. They only tap directly, they won't use bungs. Opinions on whether or not to use bungs are mixed. If they're welded correctly, they're as good as direct tapping. If they're not...
welndmn 12-12-2005, 12:57 PM Dude, if you just bought the taps its about 150 for both L and R taps.
Get together with someone
lightnin 12-12-2005, 12:59 PM Trevor at WFOConcepts.com is going to hook me up. Heck of a guy there. Thanks for the help. Getting direct tap not bungs.
plug ugly 12-12-2005, 01:45 PM trevors are nice, he machines flat spots so you can use a crescent wrench instead of a pipe wrench.

MUDDER79 12-12-2005, 06:26 PM Central Arkansas. I will check the link out. Thanks Dave.
If you are near Mountain Top, my Cousin can probily do it for ya. or at least let you know where to go.
