I got a hold of an air tank form a 18 wheeler:thumbup ( for free):rockon and I was looking for any better ideas for mounting. I was thinking of mounting it under the driver side between the x-member and the wheel well. I was thinking of a peice of metel inside the bko with u-bolts going around the metel and through the floor to the tank. That would bring it up above the frame rails.
. It has 2 large holes top/bottem, 2 small at each end and on each side below the large holes. Would air hose for air tools work or should I use hard lines. I'm not sure if I'm going with a york or putting a compresur in side the bko .And yes I have pics. if the pics need to be resized can some do that for me. I dont know how.:banghead :twak Thanks for any more ideas.

Don't suppose you have room under your hood, do you?

thats a nice sit-up u got there splah. I think that would work better then putting more holes in the back of the bko. I'm going to put mine in between the fram rails still. I always beat the sides up pretty good. Ya 78 I like under the hood to b empty. Thanks for the Ideas.

Your pictures are fine but i was wondering if you're from the future? The date on the pics is 2023. Do we still have broncos then?

Hey taft.....What are the dimensions on the tank you got? Splah....do you have a link for those tank bracket pics?

Thanks

I can get them tomorrow for ya, but this site (ExtremeOutback.com)has one I do believe is the same as what I got I do know it is a 4 gal tank. A friend of mine drives one of those 18 wheeler moble tire changing truck and they have alot of big parts laying around at there shop.I'm just wating for him to get me some shackels.

I just drilled holes in the floor of my Jeep and mounted the tank between the framerails and used big washers. It's been on there for about 4 years, now, with no issues.

No, I didn't roll my Jeep just to get a pic of the tank, but it sure is damn convenient for showing where it is, don't ya think? It's the long gray cylinder opposite of the muffler:

Excuse my ignorance please, but a quick question. What are the purposes for having a tank like that on the truck? Is that basically a small air compressor or something?

peteyg

It's an air tank for OBA (Onboard Air). Many of us put air compressors of one sort or another on our rigs for things like airing up tires at the end of the day, running air tools, running air lockers, and other things. If you want to run air tools or reseat beads, an air tank is VERY handy. You don't NEED one, but it's nice to have a little reserve. It gives that extra push, for example, when trying to break loose lug nuts with an impact wrench. I've used mine to run a die grinder.

some air storage for onboard air. storage will allow faster tire filling. i guess you can use it as storage only and not on board air and fill at home or gas station....mike

Even having one of those big 10 gallon tanks isn't enough to fill even one 35" tire from trail pressure to street pressure.

I always figured that was right around the best place to mount one on a later FSB. I know there's room enough there on mine for two tanks around 4gal in size, I think. I'm still planning to OBA mine sometime in the next year or so, but I'm going for a different location on mine -- which won't do you any good, since I'm also in the middle of cab swapping mine, and the location I'll probably use doesn't exist if you still have a body. :brownbag

I see Yorks at Pick-n-Pull (formerly UWI) all the time, if you want to go that route. $25. They also have lots of vans, which is great if you want to do a Sag swap. As for the air lines and fittings -- Lowes carries everything you need for the whole setup. If you wander into the plumbing section, most of the local ones have a pretty good selection of NPT barb fittings, elbow adapters, valves, etc, and they also carry 200psi cut-to-length air hose. That's the way I'd go for most of the plumbing. As for the relay to control the compressor, go to Northern Tool (Newport News or Independence, whichever is closer, I don't remember where in the area you are), and if you look in their air tool section they carry Square D pressure switches to run a compressor. Usually have at least 125 and 175. All you have to do is hook the pressure switch in series between a source of key on power and the compressor clutch (maybe with an override kill switch in series too) and you're good to go, completely automatic operation. Northern is probably also the better place to go for the safety valve and regulator, too.

I just found out Sunday that the Independence Northern also stocks most of their line of premade hydraulic hose and fittings, too. That's gonna make hooking up my new Sag pump much cheaper. Plus, they also carry JIC37 fittings, which are the brass equivalent to aluminum AN fittings, completley interchangeable, at 1/4 the cost. :chili:

I've got two tanks on my 86 about the size of yours mounted under the truck below the seats between the frame and the rockerpanel. Never had any damage to them. My nerf bars help to procect them. Eventually when I build my rock sliders and the nerfs are gone I plan on adding more protection. Both tanks have pressure relief valves (saftey), drain valves, inputs and outputs with kwick release fittings. My plumbing is all stainless Swagelock fittings, hard lines and braided stainless hoses. Stuff is expensive as hell, but not when you "find" it. ;)

I'm going to put the tank for my 78 inside. No rear seat in that one so I'll have more room.

No problemo, just post lots of pics. You'll probably beat me to OBA, since right now I've got a frame with two axles and a drivetrain. :toothless

I actually have an extra challenge to work around with the sag swap, too. The usual BroncoAir kit won't fit as is. I'm actually thinking about getting a little spud shaft made to adapt the York to a later Sanden compressor clutch and serpentine pulley, which will also (I think) push the York far enough back to not get in the way of my power steering reservoir. I figure the cost wouldn't be much more than getting the PS pulley made or buying it from BroncoAir, and I don't like the idea of having to pull my compressor belt every time I want to check my PS fluid, though a bearing to support the pulley on the shaft will add a little to the complexity. I dunno yet, still in the brainstorming phase at this point. :popc1:

Heard something interesting today. A friend of mine said that his dad made a custom rear bumper out of 6" pipe and made it so that he could store water and/or air in it. I crunched some numbers and found that a 6" pipe about 5 feet long holds a little over 7 and a quater gallons. Assuming the welds were airtight, this would be a pretty cool place to use as a tank. Otherwise its just wasted.:toothless

drilled holes in the flor (roughly between the seat mounts) and mounted it above the drive line, behind the rear crossmember.

If I can git all this box in under there, with an oversized muffler, you ought to have more than enough room to run it back under there too;

I am thinking about doin the oba as well but haven't decided on tank or tank placement.

Anybody have any pics of the tank inside the engine compartment? (especially on a 78/79)

Not a 78/79 but its even tighter than those years in a 89 with a 460. Its about a 2-3 gallon tank. I put my roomates lift on his 2000 chevy 1500 with air tools from my truck and it worked great.

Thats a pretty good idea there sixliture. But I think my tank is a little to fat for that idea, but that is a good idea for extra storge. I like to keep everything inside the bronco hidden if i can. Is that 16 ga. you used?I also like plugugly's too. It looks like it is in the same place as your idea six. I'm I looking at it right or is it just me?

That looks like the Ebay tank I bought, I think it was a 7 gallon.
I put it up between the frame where its completly out of the way and not hanging low. It was a tight fit, had to do a little grinding to wedge it in there

Mike that's same size tank I have. Looks like you have it bolted to the top of the frame on the one side. I can't make out the other side, deos the tank reach to other side, or did ya have to put a braket on that side? I can't make it out.

Its bolted to a bracket on the frame

Thats where I had to grind to make it fit.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/209224/fullsize/000_0344.JPG

I had to jack the dents out of teh bed to make it go too. Like I said, its a tight fit.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/209226/fullsize/000_0346.JPG

The bracket on the right side I welded to the frame. Its just a piece of 1/2" steel with the two bolt holes drilled through it
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/209300/fullsize/000_0360.JPG

The bracket on the other side I bolted on so I could remove the tank without pulling the body up.
http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/209301/fullsize/000_0361.JPG

So the tank just sits on top of those brackets and theres four 7/16" bolts that hold it on

Bump. Anyone got any more pics of their air tank setup? I think Im gonna put my Steve83 1.7 gallon Landrover tank parallel to the frame with that crazy long bolt system, but I'd like to see all possible pics...especially if they are close enough to show how the brackets attach to the tank. My tank doesnt have brackets so Im gonna have to figure something out.

It's bolted to the floor, just to the left of the driveshaft/rear end, directly beneath the rear seat.

Way back about69 or70 a friend of mine in Fl where I grew up fabed up a rear bumper out of 8" well casing.Welded the ends shut, and added a fill point and a QD fitting for an air hose.It would hold something like 350PSI.Worked great.

No. Although I think it would be cool, it would also be more work. I ended up mounting a 7 gallon tank to the underside of my bed floor. It was a very tight fit, will snap a few pics in the morning if you want. Mine is different from Mike2's. Mine is larger in diameter and for a moment didn't think it would fit. I did finally get it mounted, and I am pretty sure I can remove the drivers side shock with out having to drop the tank.:thumbup
