ARB sounds good, but the OBA can power it

And I'm sure Dave could do something better than the JAmes duff arms for cheaper

I dunno Tim, they look kinda weak :shrug I'm probably wrong, but unless they're .250" thick wall, they look like they'll bend up faster than a stock SFA radius arm

BTW, did you get my PM? what do you guys think?

These are OK, but I would like the Heims on the ends

I cna't imagine it being too hard to add a heim to those arms... I certainly like those better than the other ones, they look way stronger

I have also been thinking of grafting 78 radius arms to my superlift arms........may save a crapload of hassle. (and $)

Davids78Bronco
09-12-2003, 03:38 AM
heck yeah, it would! How much are the second pair of arms? they look spendy

:shocked That must be the same pair that Tommy mentioned, some months ago, isn't it? Yeh, that's a no-brainer... it'll be WAY cheaper to modify the 78 arms with your extended arms

I have also been thinking of a setup that is kinda a Dustin/Oscar/Chris combo.

Oscar has modified rancho arms,

Chris has TTB spring buckets etc.

Dustins is just sweet.

for 4500 you can get the fabritech kit with 8 inch lift and a locked completely reduilt d60 front dont waste that kind of money on the d44

Dustin
09-12-2003, 10:45 AM
hell dont even waste your money on the fabritech kit, you do the same thing for pennys.

yeah tim you need to do some triming on that price list, scratch the ctms and warns right away, dont need c/o overs right away, and build some kinda of wristed or extended arm. it will be much easier to swallow the price that way. sure thats all stuff you want to do, myself included but you can always do it later once you get the swap done.

I couldn't tell you the exact thickness of the arm itself. The welded in, threaded-bung may have a shoulder where it slips inside, or not. JDK.

http://www.superford.org/getfile.php?id=86290&toggle=fullsize&filename=DCP_2394.JPG

I can tell you these arms are fawking heavy.

I can tell you I think using stock radius-arms and drop brackets SUCKS. Period. It compromise correcting caster angle with putting stupid amounts of leverage on the frame. Ask me how I know.

I can tell you that trying to avoid drop brackets and using 7* C-bushings with 6" coils and stock RA's will work, but not flex well.

I believe the solution I was looking for was longer RA's in order to avoid drop brackets and increase travel.

I bought the Duff arms because they appeared to have put the most thought into them. Not just clearanced for bigger tires, but also a choice of built in caster correction, depending on your application, and heims as opposed to bushings. They also have changed their design at least twice that I know of (lower shock mounts and the way the inner C mounts to the arm), which suggested to me that they are aware of how their product is performing and areas it may need improvements.

Do what YOU want to do, based on what YOU think.

I think if I was to do it all over again, I might try leaves. But that's just my opinion.
Difference is, it's based on the fact that I've done and re-done this SAS trying to improve it. I've tried coils and would have something to compare a leaf-sprung SAS to, as opposed to the people who have opinions on things which are based on something they've read or heard (or a picture), and have zero, actual-tangible knowledge about the subject. Speculation is worthless.
It appears, your thinking about spending a good amount of money here. Since you were thinking about the Duff arms, and I have some, I replied. If they sucked, I'd tell you that too.

I do have an opinion about wristed arms as well as those Fabritech ones, but since I've had neighther, who cares?

Good luck.

Sincerely,
-m

Thank you for replying on those arms, I still think those are some of the beefiest out there, I have seen the pics of Brian S' truck, and I have followed the buildup of yours.

damn that seems expensive. $4500 for a sas? my whole truck with D60s didnt cost that much. i do like both sets of arms. the nice part about the bushings i would think is the cushioning as compared to the metal to metal of the heims. i am so glad i read a bunch of mag articles on building low dough rigs and got a 79 to start with. everybodys swaps look good, keep us updated.

Look at the C-bracket on the right, just below the fan. See how it mounts to the arm? Those are polyurethane bushings that the bolts go through. Just like what you find in a track bar or leaf springs. Sort of hard to see because they are blue. The bracket on the left side doesn't have them in yet in this picture.
http://www.superford.org/getfile.php?id=79510&toggle=fullsize&filename=DCP_2398.JPG

There aren't any vibrations felt using the heim ends, over regular bushings.
You can sort of see how they mount in this picture.

hey matt (jafo) can you use dom over the knuckle steering with those radius caps from Duff? I had to notch out my d side cap cause it had a shock mounte on it that would have been in the way.

Crazed, severla things. CTM's are closer to 200, IMO you really dont need coil overs, these fabtech coils we are using work well. A wristed arm is MUCH cheaper, just weld some plate steel on the sides of the stock arms to reinforce them. you dont need to use drop brackets on the radius arms, you can lay them back like I did and it works very well. Another, much cheaper option to the duff arms, is usingg stockers, welding on supports like I said, and then ( i will have to find out where, I think bent and twisted) buy some spacers that thread onto the end of the stock radius arms, and then put heims on them. bill (my buddy witht eh chevy coils sprung front) used them and they work very nicely, even when his wristed arm is pinned. Cost was maybe 150 or so.

BTW, I will be selling my complete D44 soon with warns, CTMs, brand new ARB, 4.10s and completely rebuilt everything within a month or so, if you wanted to wait a bit. It is a total bolt in axle ready to wheel, already tapped for over the knuckle steering with 1 ton TRE's

Are you talking about the forward (towards the front) part that sandwiches the axle between it and the radius arm? Those are stock caps from my stock RA's (didn't have dual shocks). Duff doesn't supply those with the arms. I don't know if they'd clear a over-knuckle tie-rod or not.
One day, I'll be able to tell you, as that's another thing on the eventual "to-do" list.

Side note:
I read something on the list about your future t-case plans.
Thinking about Atlas? I've been looking at it... :)

Take care Damon.

oh, i thought duff gave you new ones. Just painted yours?

Yeah, am considering the atlas. Mine isnt long for this world and as yet am not planning on a tranny swap. seems I got my e4od overheating issues resolved, and since I cant fit a doubler (especially with the sterling thats going in) the atlas seems like the best, tho costly, solution.
