: Dayton brand welder?

i need some quick advice.
i was cruising craigslist and came across a listing for a cheap 220 welder.
the guy said it is around ten years old and he has only used it a few times, but says its in working order.
he said it is a Dayton model 3Z350 230w arc welder.
i already have a clark 120 that i have been screwing around with, but am not able to get the penetration i need with it.
i am taking some welding classes soon, and would like to get a jump start by using something larger.

i cant find any information on the dayton company though, to do any research on this particular welding unit.

any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thats because, its a piece of chit. :-)

The Dayton brand is a Grainger product. Its pretty damn hard to muck up a buzz box... Id say get it.. if its about $100 range, its gonna be worth the money!

Ive got an old Sears buzz box that goes to 230 amps, though Ive never had to go that high, welded some 1/4" stuff at about 175 amps and it was HOT with great penetration.

I need to add this to my sig line, but same is NOT same. 100 amps output from a 110V welder is NOT the same as 100 amps output from a 220V welder, the 220 will be about 50% hotter!!

BTW, never ever buy another Clarke welder. And never ever buy a 110V welder. :-)

Okay, flame on regarding the last line, but you know in your heart its true. :goodfinge

Is this it?

$225 for a buzz box used is a bit high, you can get an AC/DC Century for that much. Though, all Century MIG welders are pure junk.

BUY THIS! But check the shipping charges first...

This is a DAMN good welder!!

Heres a good one, its at $10 but the reserve isnt met...

Its older then the model I have, but will still be a good one.

Close to NJ? Heres a killer deal...

This.... Is a DAMN JOKE! 110V 100A welder for $287... and its not even worth the shipping charges to get it to your door! Junk!

Hes right, shipping is expensive, $107 to my house...
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Lincoln-stick-welder_W0QQitemZ7599351444QQcategoryZ113743QQrdZ1Q QcmdZViewItem
But, its a good unit, a newer model too!

Another good one, but gonna be expensive to ship...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Lincoln-225Amp-Arc-welder-and-75-receptacle-cord-NEW_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ63700QQitemZ4620224 216QQrdZ1

$329 with FREE shipping, about as good as it gets..

And lastly, look in your classifieds, or a trading post type sales paper, you should be able to find one if you are patient and look, and wont have to pay for shipping.

The one above for $329 with free shipping is exactly what I would strongly advise someone to get for a HOT stick welder, that will do frames, bumpers, sliders, winch mounts, trailer hitches, WTF ever you would want!! And do small stuff too, like lantern or plant hangers, coat hangers, fix gas grilles, etc.. etc... etc..

Anyway, good luck!
Andrew

Is he local, for a pick up? Shipping charges will make you chit yourself.

Also, ask him to be so kind as to send you a few more, some of the adjusting crank and the front dial indicator, and the three outlets (Im guessing 1 is ground, 1 is LO and 1 is HI).

Post the pix when you get them please.

From what Im seeing though, looks good. :thumbup

i may just go and get it.
i was going to buy a tool chest this week, but i can spend the hundred on this and wait on the box.
my crap is all over the garage anyhow, another week of mess isn't going to make much difference. ha.
i dont want to miss out on getting a good welder though.
i think this will be more welder than i will need. but that is good.
the bronco is more truck than i need too, at this point. but i am still building that.

Hey guy, have him let you run a few test beads with it to check its condition. 99% chance, its gonna be just fine! Like I said, buzz boxes are stupid simple. A transformer and a sliding amp, or sometimes tapped settings, its nothing inside of one, they seldom ever go bad.

In case someone is looking for a bang up deal for a welder, head to your local Sears and have them order this for ya...

These kick ass too, but the above Hobart is perfectly fine, and less expensive..

Off topic, but heres the one I want to save my coins for!

Its not the top of the line weldpack type welder, but its an extreamly good unit, and affordable! But it *WILL* be running gas (gassless flux core only welding uber suxor)

i think this will be more welder than i will need. but that is good.
:twak NOW your learning, you can never buy TOO much welder! You learned a valuable lesson when you bought that Clarke POS, you just pissed your money away and could have used it toward something worth bragging about!

Im sure you will find that one a sweet unit. Try if you can, to weld all your beads flat if you can, then you will always have a nice bead. Verticals can be a pain if your not experienced, and dont even think of overheads. Practice, Practice, Practice!! Sorry, you never mentioned how much experience you had, but if your starting out, go take a course at your local VoTec, thats where I got my start, then I welded structural steel at a fab plant, all we did was thick shit.

Welding can be lots of fun, but be safe. Keep a fire extenguiser handy at all times (for that matter, just mount a small one on the side of your box), dont tuck anything in (pant legs or shirt), wear long sleeve tee-shirts (protect your arms from the light), and a good hood....

This hood is only $120, but worth every penny!!
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=200320563&R=200320563

The style hood I got from them, they dont even carry anymore, and I gave $150 for it, mine is fixed #9 but Ive done everything with it, and wouldnt trade it for the love of money!!

im going to pick it up possibly tonight, but by tomorrow afternoon for sure.
im pretty excited.
i have abunch of projects laying in the garage ready to roll.
i can do some decent mig beads, not great, but decent. my uncle showed me how to do some stuff. i also have a bunch of dvd's and books that i have been reading, and doing alot of practicing.
i play in the garage all the time, just practicing, trying different things.
i am going to be taking a vo tech class real soon.
i am waiting for my financial aid to come through, when it does, i will be attending wyotech in the summer. there i will get a ton of welding classes.

my new sliders, front bumper, and rear tire carrier will finally be getting finished.
after i take some classes and get my technique down, i will be doing my roll cage. it will be part of one of my classes, so i will have some supervision. supervision is a good thing for me.

Well, sounds like your on the right track... get your uncle back after you get that stick and have him show you what he knows... because 10 minutes of hands on instruction is worth 1,000 minutes of videos you could watch... just not the same.

And follow though with that VoTech class, Im telling ya... It will greatly improve your welding ability and knowledge, you will love your welding instructor by the time the first class is over! :-)

Dont dive in too deep at first, get your welding class out the way before you start building super heavy duty project... Bad habits are harder to break, your better to learn it right the first time.

Enjoy, welding is a LOT of fun!! Building something from scratch is always a greatly rewarding feeling!!!!

And post back with something you made too! We like seeing that kind of shit!

Good luck,
Andrew

ill bring her in and get some pics.

i tried it out there at this guys shop.
holy smokes is it better than my mig set up. it just burns man. and i got much better beads. i was tooling around on some 1/4 plate and it wasn't doing it any justice.

i now know why they call them buzz boxes.
haha.

i think for now i am just going to unplug the dryer and use it that way for a bit.
i think i am getting fired from my job, so i will have to wait to have an electrician come out and put in another box and plug elsewhere in the garage.
good thing though is that the dryer is already in the garage.
and the lines that came with it are about 30 feet long.

i think this weekend i will get a good start on the tire carrier.
i am going to home desperate tonight and pick up some angle iron to screw around with. mayber make a rack to hang the cords and some accessories off of.
