View Full Version : UFC, Gracie vs. Hughes Anyone in SLC getting it?
godless 05-11-2006, 12:56 AM I just have regular cable and cant order ppv's. I really dont want to go to an overcrowded bar either.
Is anyone here locally in SLC getting it and having a get together????
Just curious, this shit to me is like religion...I have to see this fight, even if I pull a peeping tom on some random house
MyFullSize 05-11-2006, 01:23 AM Id love to see it myself, but I cant afford the PPV... though, it would be the shiznit cause I got Tivo. :thumbup
No4Low 05-11-2006, 01:45 AM I'll have it....come on out to Kali
Burl Swift 05-11-2006, 11:39 AM Hey Jer, let me know where you end up going to watch it, even if it is at a bar, I'd like to go too.
Will Good Spirits have it?
godless 05-11-2006, 01:02 PM Nope, the thing with bars, clubs, restraunts, etc. is that the ppv provider bills the establishment the ppv price for the max occupncy registered with the state. So Good Spirits would be charged 212 seats @ $50.00 per seat regardless if 10 people showed up or 212. Places the "The Puck" can typically afford to have it because they expect liquior sales to cover the difference.
So that is the story on why small bars dont get the fights.....It sucks.
Do you know anyone with satelite? I would be willing to pay for it if it was at a "good spot", if you know what I mean.
Burl Swift 05-11-2006, 02:20 PM Nope, I don't know anyone with a satelite.
Saurian 05-11-2006, 08:27 PM Hoyce Gracie? Matt Hughes?
MyFullSize 05-11-2006, 09:42 PM Hoyce Gracie? Matt Hughes?
Yeah, I think thats the one.
Hoyce is like my hero, because the Gracie family's contribution to BJJ in the US. Of which, Ill be studying as soon as I can afford the schoo. :doh0715:
On the other hand, Hughes is also my hero because hes just a rock solid stud of a fighter and very well spoken, the "best" spokes person for UFC.
If anyone gets to record it, can I get a copy??
Saurian 05-11-2006, 11:21 PM No chit, I'll throw in a dollar or two above shipping! Or just record it onto puter and send it to me =P.
BroncoDoug 05-12-2006, 01:42 AM I was thinking about getting the fight. I am all the way up here in Roy though...
godless 05-12-2006, 01:54 AM Its Royce, and yes its Royce Gracie vs. Matt Hughes May 27th.
I love both fighters as well. For me its hard to choose, its like the Fedor vs. Crocop fight. I cant pick one, just hope for a really good fight.
However, if I was to be a skeptic, I would say that Royce Gracie will win by rear naked choke, or a clock choke, it all depends if Zuffa will let him wear his gi or not.
The reason I say this is because BJ Penn beat Matt hughes relatively easy and he is no where near the practioner that Royce is. I think that if Royce and BJ Penn fought Royce would win 10 out of 10 times.
However, a fight is a fight and hell if Matt Hughes and I were fighting, and I got a lucky punch in I could possibly knock him out too, thats the fight game it can go either way. However if I was to fight Matt hughes he would win 100 out of 100 times with his eyes closed, like I said it would have to be a lucky punch.
godless 05-12-2006, 01:57 AM Damn, Roy huh? I cant remember how far away is it from SLC (Miles)?
Because if Garth and I car pooled it migh be worth it if I talk him into buying the beer and I pay for the gas. (WINK)
Either way I appreciate you posting up. Thats awesome
EDIT: I just looked, its about 45 miles. So that would be a 90 mile round trip, at 14 mpg, and diesel is $3.30 a gal 14/90= apx 6.42 gallons of gas x 3.30 = $21.21
That actually sound pretty good.
Garth what do you think? Wanna go?
Doug, are you sure you want to entertain to idiots from SLC though?
Burl Swift 05-12-2006, 11:45 AM I get the same milage at $3.00, so it might be worth it to drive mine up. And I bet Ally would want to go, she doesn't care who's fighting, she just likes to watch.
I'm down, but we've got to make sure Doug is down, not only with us but with us drinking beer.
And my hopes for the fight:
Gracie, and I don't care how. It will definitly be a submission or a choke out. Royce is one of the few people in the world who I think could win from his back, not to mention the leverage advantage he has over Hughes. Sure, Hughes could slam him down, but there is no way in hell that he could pass Royce's guard.
Edit - And Doug, Jer isn't kidding when he says "idiots from SLC", we really are idiots.
godless 05-12-2006, 01:50 PM So Doug, sounds like you started something.....
PM me if you are really sure you want two wierdos at your house.
If you are a partaker of the bavarian bubbly hoppy type, I will be more than happy to provide your flavor. If not we could always have Ice tea or Diet Coke too. Either way its cool by me.
BroncoDoug 05-14-2006, 05:22 PM Damn sorry I didn't see this till right now. I didn't end up getting the fight and there is some other shit going on so... yeah sorry for this. I am thinking about recording it if anyone still would like to see it?
DWNHLLR 05-21-2006, 04:46 AM Beerman, you can get PPV with regular cable, no need for satellite or Digital. Just go to Comcast and they will give you a box. Then once you do invite everyone (including me) over with a cover charge to cover it. I would host it myself but I have a week old baby in the house.
starcity 05-21-2006, 08:13 AM i heard they werent going to let him where the gi but dont think will change outcome. i think royce will win since both like to be on mat and royces skills are superior. but with that layoff who?? conditioning has got to go to hughes. cant afford either(trying to save for new life springs) but at least pics come out pretty quick
godless 05-21-2006, 01:03 PM I will call them tomorrow. If they will give me a box then I might get it. Last year I called them to get the Pride Grand Prix and they told me they dont rent boxes for ppv anymore. Its another "reason" to get digital cable they told me.
DWNHLLR 05-25-2006, 04:13 PM Well? Did you call them?
My money is on Matt for sure. I'll bet Bronco parts if anyone has something worthy of going against the factory roll-bar in my garage.
As a retired athlete, it's a lot harder to "come back" than it seems (to the former champion, legend, whatever). Even when Michael Jordan came out of retirement, it was nothing like the days when he played on the Bulls.
.
JahWarrior 05-25-2006, 04:28 PM I have Royce Gracie picked to win this fight. I'm not so sure Matt Hughes (who as I fighter, I like a lot, kinda a "local" boy ya know :toothless ) could beat Yoshida from Pride, and Royce beat the crap outta Yoshida when they last fought (beat him up good). Both are mediocre standup fighters, this will definitely be a ground fight. Matt Hughes has excellent ground control, and even his submissions are getting better and better... But Royce has an unbelievable ground game, and good Jiu-Jitsu seems to be Hughes kryptonite.
Gracie by submission.

Royce never "retired". He has been very active, just not on the US circuits (like UFC). He has fought in Japan several times over the last few years. There is no "come back" here, unless you count coming back to the UFC vs some other card. :shrug
DWNHLLR 05-25-2006, 04:50 PM Hmm. Too bad you don't live in Salt Lake with some good stuff to put on it.
DWNHLLR 05-30-2006, 02:04 AM Well Jah, Burl & Babybop, guess you were wrong!!! :goodfinge
I didn't get to see it. Did any of you? I read on UFC.com that it wasn't much of a fight. Royce threw a couple kicks to find range but nothing that landed. Matt then got him with a good left overhand shot. Next it went to the mat and Matt dominated. Matt even had Royce in an arm bar that Royce got out of. Matt then got on top and pounded. Gracie had no defense and the ref had to stop it. First round TKO. :box0715:
Hate to say I told you so!
