Here's the scoop:
My 37x12.5 IROKs I bought last august could use a bit of rotating, so I started about 4 weeks ago by taking passenger front and swapping with brand new spare (5 tires were all bought at same time). They are directional, so the spare is best used on the pass. side. Anyway, in short order I lost 2, 3oz. weights while just daily driving. Before this it did seem this tire was just not as balanced as the others (this as evidenced by needing 5! :shocked 3 oz. weights) since the vehicle had a little shimmy/vibe. Well, after the loss of the 2 weights, it was real bad. I felt sorry for my female bud visiting...took her to the coast about 2hr drive each way. When I returned I soon discovered another shoe was thrown (3, 3 oz weights gone now). Vibe was major bad, and after Crazed's shakedown run last weekend I'd had enough....
Went to America's/discount tire today and swapped back on my original right front. Asked him to check balance and to our surprise he had to pull the 1 weight that was on there...it now has no balance weights, kinda unusual I think for this large a tire, but the guy ain't lying since I've drove it home at 55-65MPH and pretty darn smooth again. Back to the wheel that had 5 weights....it kept throwning an error code and could not be balanced. This with 500 miles max on it since it's been the spare. The guy dismounted/remounted it, same result. No use in adding weights, this tire was out of round as it rotated, and bad. No damage noticeable inside either, so the guy just flat out said he could not balance it and would order me a new IROK. :rockon :chili: I did not mention this, nor ask for it. I hope the new one is similar to the other good ones, with taking on average about 6-7ozs. to balance at most. I also think it threw the weights so quickly because of the tire issue itself (being sooo out of round).
He asked what torque I wanted the 9/16ths 8 lug studs at (he told me the spec, but asked me what I wanted as well), he also asked what pressure I wanted the tire at, and checked the other tires to match them.
Anyway, as most of us know, just another reason to give this company all your biz.:beer
