View Full Version : ROAD TRIP ! ! ! !
Steve83 10-18-2006, 09:41 PM I'm looking at a '99 CV ex-cop car (detective use - not patrol) with 150K about 100mi outside of Baston. If the deal goes through, I'll fly up there the morning of Nov.4 & drive all night to get home.
I've looked at the route MapQuest suggests, but it wants me to go thru NYC. I've been there once, and I'm not really interested in fighting that traffic & navigating those roads alone, so I'm thinking about going a little further West before I turn South & taking a 'scenic route'.
I have to go thru Hartford, so how about taking I-84 to Scranton, then I-81 S thru Harrisburg, Winchester, Roanoke, Bristol, Knoxville, Nashville, home? That's probably the easiest since I stay on 81 most of the way.
But it looks like I might save a few miles if I take I-68 W out of Hagerstown, I-79 S out of Morgantown, I-64 W out of Charlestown thru Lexington to Louisville, then I-65 S to N'ville & I-40 home.
Does anyone know of any specific problems along either of those routes? Construction, drawbridges/ferries/toll roads, speed traps (I'd certainly get caught), bad road, etc.?
Sixlitre 10-18-2006, 09:51 PM Good luck Steve
what's wrong with your current CV ?

DvlRacer 10-18-2006, 09:58 PM Pay for my plane ticket and I'd be your copilot
chambiec1 10-18-2006, 10:21 PM Thats cool... Crown Vics are awesome!
Haha... I live only an hour from Scranton... just thought that was pretty cool...
PaulT 10-18-2006, 10:42 PM about 100mi outside of Baston.
BOston? :scratchhe
I'm about 50 mi from Boston, where's the car?
dsotmoon 10-18-2006, 10:43 PM if you go through Roanoke you'll be passing right by me, maybe a stop for dinner? we drove from Roanoke to Boston, took about 11-12 hours if i remember correctly, said i'd never do it again :toothless we went past NYC but i dont remember the exact route now but had no traffic problems until hitting the crazy ass drivers in boston
Steve83 10-19-2006, 01:50 AM what's wrong with your current CV ?Nothing. :DPay for my plane ticket and I'd be your copilotPay for your own & you can ride along. :thumbupBOston? :scratchhe I'm about 50 mi from Boston......and you've never heard anyone call it "Baston"??? :histericaif you go through Roanoke you'll be passing right by me, maybe a stop for dinner?Whatcha cookin'? :popc1: If it's 11 hours away, it'd be around midnight when I get there. :crazy
I gotta start shopping for a new radar detector... :brownbag
Chuck 10-19-2006, 11:09 AM If I remember right off the top of my head, when I went up years ago I swung up west of town, then took the NY Throughway (?) around town to the north. No problems there. Been five years, though, and I'm too lazy to look it up. :toothless
More like Baaaaston, though. Gotta hold that A.
81 through VA is just as trafficky and heavily loaded with trucks as the rest of 81, but as long as you're alert it's not too bad. Used to be years ago Pulaski county was known for ticketing travellers on 81 for as little as 3mph over, don't know if they still have that rep. Rest of the ride down's not too bad, I took 81 up toward Hagerstown and Carlisle and back a couple of years ago for All Ford Nationals. :thumbup
ScorpionBoy 10-19-2006, 11:45 AM more like BAHston. drive your cah through Bahston.
get a escort passport. use mine all the time.
bossmankx 10-19-2006, 02:48 PM I can't offer too much info on all your trip, but for the area's around WV, here's what I know.
I81 can get loaded with moderate traffic at about any given time, especially afternoons anywhere from Martinsburg through northern Va, but it usually stays moving at speed limit, and is easy to cruise at night. They are making it 3 lanes through WV, right around Martinsburg, I'm not sure how the construction is right now, but last time I was home, it wasnt more than a 4 mile or so 55mph stretch.
I68 from Hagerstown to Morgantown (where I live) isn't too bad, except for alot of mountains. Usually pretty light traffic except near Cumberland, MD. Police have a field day with that stretch of road so watch for speedtraps through Rocky Gap, Cumberland, LeVail, and at the MD/WV border. Once you get to Morgantown and get on I79, its not too bad of a drive, not as large mountains, good scenery, and police are there as a deterrent, not usually ticketing, unless in construction zone. There is construction through Fairmont, WV about 10 miles after you get on 79 from 68, but its only a few mile long 55mph stretch, and not too bad. Traffic can be mildly annoying untill evening, but nothin too serious.
MikeW 10-19-2006, 03:26 PM Bastard? :scratchhe
I'm about 50 mi from Bastard, where's the car?
I didn't know there was a town called Bastard:scratchhe
MikeW 10-19-2006, 03:28 PM if you go through Roanoke you'll be passing right by me, maybe a stop for dinner? we drove from Roanoke to Boston, took about 11-12 hours if i remember correctly, said i'd never do it again :toothless we went past NYC but i dont remember the exact route now but had no traffic problems until hitting the crazy ass drivers in boston
Be careful with Joe, he tried to coax Raf into coming to Roanoke on a free plane ticket just to have dinner with him.:goodfinge
86 Bronco 10-19-2006, 04:56 PM One word .....search.....j/k...good luck:beer
dsotmoon 10-19-2006, 08:28 PM almost all of 81 through VA now is a ticket waiting to happen, they have really cracked down in the last year but i still travel it around 9 mph over the limit with no problems
and radar detectors are illegal in VA, they will pop you for that too if you get caught
Steve83 10-20-2006, 02:52 AM bossmankx
Thanks - that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for.
Joe
Do they use VG2 detector detectors, or Spectre? Most of the units I'm considering are VG2 stealthy, but to defeat Spectre costs ~2x as much.
I'm considering a V1 (lots of false alerts?), an Escort x50/Bel RX65 Pro (supposedly the best value), a Bel Vector 995 (mixed reviews), or a PNI Silver Bullet (cheap, decent, optionally cordless).
MikE2 10-20-2006, 09:40 AM You know most of those police cars or any other government car/truck has had recycled oil in it all its life?
Recycled oil is gay
83bronco5.0 10-20-2006, 10:33 AM You should take a trip up to Chicago for a CV Interceptor. They are all over the place up here and its 1/4th the distance. Any color, any mileage. If you dont mind me asking, how much are they looking to get for the 99?
96broncoman 10-20-2006, 10:42 AM my buddy just bought a used police car. it seems like the CV police vehicels are being replaced by the Impalas, i wonder why.
83bronco5.0 10-20-2006, 10:59 AM my buddy just bought a used police car. it seems like the CV police vehicels are being replaced by the Impalas, i wonder why.
Places that were involved in the lawsuit against Ford for the Crown Vic's Pinto-like explosions cannot purchase CV's according to their settlement. Chicago started buying Impalas and IL State Police has been buying Impalas/Chargers due to this.
Steve83 10-20-2006, 11:15 AM You should take a trip up to Chicago for a CV Interceptor. They are all over the place up here...Do you think there aren't any in Memphis??? :wacko I'm going where I'm getting a HELLUVA deal....its 1/4th the distance.Check again - it's more than half.If you dont mind me asking, how much are they looking to get for the 99?I don't mind you asking, but I'm not answering yet. :toothless I'm getting a helluva deal, IMO.
Steve83 10-20-2006, 11:20 AM ...the Crown Vic's Pinto-like explosions...It's not really the same. Pintos didn't have screws put thru their gas tanks by moron radio/equipment installers.Chicago started buying Impalas and IL State Police has been buying Impalas/Chargers...Many places have - have you talked to any of the cops that are driving them? Louisiana State Police had a fleet of Impalas that had so many problems, when NO flooded, LA sold them every Impala they had & bought a new fleet of CVs.
83bronco5.0 10-20-2006, 11:31 AM Do you think there aren't any in Memphis??? :wacko I'm going where I'm getting a HELLUVA deal.Check again - it's more than half.
Oh Im sure there are plenty everywhere. But I just found an auction nearby my work that has about 10 99-02 models all starting at 800-1300 each. They all have mileages from 75-140k. But that auction is only held Tuesday mornings. They usually have Ex-cop CV's every week and plenty of em.
Ok, maybe I didnt check the EXACT distance, but I do know it is a (relatively) straight shot down I-57 to Memphis.
83bronco5.0 10-20-2006, 11:40 AM Many places have - have you talked to any of the cops that are driving them? Louisiana State Police had a fleet of Impalas that had so many problems, when NO flooded, LA sold them every Impala they had & bought a new fleet of CVs.
I know several Chicago cops that hate the Impalas because they are just too slow. The city cops are trying to hang on to the 300K+ mile CV's and Caprices just so they dont have to drive the brand new Impalas. Im just starting to see the new Tahoes roaming around the city. My neighbor is a Sargent and he drives one every day. He says they are pretty badass.
I do remember that the CV's were recalled due to the potential explosions in rear end accidents. I knew a cop that died that way. I think they just installed metal shields between the tank and the axle.
johnski 10-20-2006, 12:51 PM I drive I-81 up to upstate NY often and there's usually construction around Scranton. Most of 81 seemed pretty clear last time I drove it in July. Harrisburg, PA and Harrisonburg, VA always have speed traps. I've never driven through those towns and not seen one, and I've driven that stretch countless times. Most of the time I just let that one guy who wants to go 85 mph stay about 1/2 mile in front of me and I look for his brake lights. Works better than a radar detector.
Sixlitre 10-20-2006, 08:27 PM my buddy just bought a used police car. it seems like the CV police vehicels are being replaced by the Impalas, i wonder why.
Quite the opposite up here
the few forces that were saddled with the FWD (POS) Impalas are dumping them at the first opportunity.
The city just pawned them off on all the poor paramedics. I haven't seen a city cop in an Impala in quite a while.
We have one test Charger, but from what I understand they're WAY more expensive than the CV, with V-8s.
Sixlitre
Steve83 10-21-2006, 04:07 PM ...VA always have speed traps. I've never driven through those towns and not seen one...Yeah, I'm really leaning toward the Louisville route, which avoids VA entirely. NO WAY I'm doing this drive without a radar detector.
MikE2 10-21-2006, 05:22 PM If your worried about it, why not just go the speed limit? Or if you do get a ticket, just accept the fact you were speeding and pay the ticket. I don't know about where your going, but whenever I roadtrip anywhere all the highways are 75 MPH anyways, or in the very least 70 for Interstate 5 on the west coast.
Hopper 10-21-2006, 07:42 PM :stupid
Nothing wrong with driving the speed limit . . .
adrianspeeder 10-21-2006, 09:44 PM Stay at 75 on 81/83 in PA and the stateys will leave ya alone. Only way I go faster is with the radar on, CB on, and following a group of trucks. Lemme know if you're swingin through harrisburg. Even if we can't meet up, I can give ya local gas prices or whatever.
Adrianspeeder
Steve83 10-21-2006, 10:11 PM If your worried about it, why not just go the speed limit?Because it's painfully slow and I don't feel like a 3-day trip.Or if you do get a ticket, just accept the fact you were speeding and pay the ticket.I will - what made you think I wouldn't??? I'm not talking about what to do AFTER getting ticketed - I'm talking about AVOIDING being cited even though I'm speeding. And, no, I don't consider speeding to be anywhere close to DUI or clubbing baby seals, so save the moral outrage (whoever). I drive fast, and I will until it kills me....whenever I roadtrip anywhere all the highways are 75 MPH anyways...They're not over here, and even if they were, 75 is still pretty slow. :toothless
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/65156/thumbnail/regeared_30890.jpg (http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/registry/media/65156)
Lemme know if you're swingin through harrisburg. Even if we can't meet up, I can give ya local gas prices or whatever. It's looking more probable every day. If I'm passing thru CT around 1:30 Sat., when would I be in H'burg?
Hopper 10-21-2006, 11:30 PM Was the gas-tank full right before you pegged it out, Steve? :toothless
Yeah, you with your going fast and all that newfanged nonsense. :scratchhe I have no problem with driving fast, I just don't like getting tickets :toothless (and I hve not had anything to go fast in in quite a while :brownbag )
Steve83 10-22-2006, 01:14 AM Remember: I only have 6 cylinders to dump gas into. :histerica The needle doesn't fall nearly as fast as when you have 8 big 'uns.
MikE2 10-22-2006, 01:56 AM And, no, I don't consider speeding to be anywhere close to DUI or clubbing baby seals, so save the moral outrage (whoever).
I have nothing against clubbing seals. I'd actually like to do it someday.
I have nothing against speeding either, I do it all the time too. How fast are you planning on going to make it not be a 3 day trip?
Steve83 10-22-2006, 04:09 PM If I wake up at 6AM Sat, arrive Boston Logan ~1PM local time Sat, I expect to be home ~10AM Sun if I can drive in the 70-80 range, allowing for some gas/food/visit stops. If I drive slower, the trip will probably be so long that I'd have to sleep before getting home, which would put me into Monday: the 3rd day. I've done several trips on which I've driven solo for more than 30 hrs straight, but I'm older now and this one should be under 20hrs of drive time, if I can get away with hauling some @$$.
I've been known to set the cruise well above 90... :brownbag
I have nothing against clubbing seals. I'd actually like to do it someday.Have you seen the movie "Thank You for Smoking"? I just got it & skimmed thru it, and there's a quick scene with a guy doing that. :histerica I haven't really watched it, though, so I don't know what it's about.
Chuck 10-23-2006, 07:32 PM Yeah, I'm really leaning toward the Louisville route, which avoids VA entirely. NO WAY I'm doing this drive without a radar detector.
You don't have to do the whole drive without a detector, only the VA portion. It's not illegal to have one, just to have it on (or anywhere it could be unplugged before the cop walked up -- in other words, throw it in the trunk when you hit the state line). :toothless
... I have no problem with driving fast, I just don't like getting tickets :toothless ...
:stupid :duh
jackhart 10-24-2006, 12:58 AM why the hell is mapquest telling you to drive thru nyc?? that doesn't make much sense, i agree, get west sooner, go thru PA.
ct, especially if you are on I95, is loaded with cops. and the tickets are ridiculously expensive. get out of that state as soon as possible without getting caught.
sounds like a fun trip. two years ago i drove from nyc to witc in tennessee. 1000 miles each way. wheeeeee!
Steve83 10-29-2006, 02:52 AM Bought my plane ticket; ordered the Bel RX65Pro; flew the whole route a couple of times in Google Earth. I've decided to avoid VA entirely, via I-65 & I-79. It's slightly shorter, and apparently a little lower traffic load.
If you live along my route, try to keep your local cops busy Saturday night so they don't notice me - I won't be there long anyway. :D
And nail everything down; I'll be moving some air...

Why aren't all of you on the FSB Members Map (http://www.frappr.com/fsb)??? :twak

Steve83 11-05-2006, 11:30 PM I was hallucinating by the time I got home, and I just woke up from 11 hours of near-coma, but I survived.
Despite logging an average speed of ~74mph (that includes fuel stops, but NOT the breakdown), I'm happy to report that the radar detector worked flawlessly & I never even got pulled over. :D I did spend a lot of time between 90 & 100, and the car really 'planed out' in that range.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/452997/thumbnail/bostonroutemap.jpg (http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/registry/media/452997_1)
You'd think that someone doing double the speed limit with no license plate would get pulled over at least once in 1400 miles... :shrug There's never a cop around... :D
The car isn't quite the deal I had hoped to get, but I still think it's gonna be worth more than I have to spend on it.

There's no comparing a FWD midsized Impala to a rear wheel drive fullsized Ford or Mercury panther platform.
FWD has no place in fleet and police work, neither does any engine but a V-8

adrianspeeder 11-12-2006, 10:11 PM True steve, but your in one of the few types of cars that can get away with that.

MikE2 11-12-2006, 11:04 PM There using the new Chargers around here now. CHP still has mostly Expeditions
Steve83 11-12-2006, 11:19 PM Yeah, all the cops I know prefer CVs.
(...except the ones who got MMs! ;))
Sixlitre 11-12-2006, 11:48 PM There using the new Chargers around here now. CHP still has mostly Expeditions
Thanks Mike
I forgot about the Chargers. Our city has six so far and they're loving them, from what I've told.
What could an Expedition possibly chase down ?

kinda because no one makes Broncos and Ramchargers anymo' eh ?
Say, I guess you're off theXmas list for payola kickbacks from maytag eh Mike ?
Sixlitre
here we mainly have cv's, dont see any impala's, but we do have police tahoes with winches.
we got the new chargers too, but we also have mach 1 undercover mustangs. there to bad ass. you dont wanna mess with them. i was going 70 down the interstate. he blows by me like im standing still, pulls over to the lane beside me, and turns his blue lights on. he pulls to the side of the road, and the car beside me followed him. you see the mach 1's and ss camaros playing alot.
