thanks for the welcome to montana guys. i am very excited for the move back to the mountains. i understand the 10 year prerequisit on the elk secrets. but i am no rookie. ive hunted elk for about 20 years. i'm just wondering what mountain ranges are good and if you have to draw for a license or if you just buy one over the counter up there. alot of states are different. anyone know if there is good bird hunting around polson? thanks.

in-staters can just buy them over the counter. i think deer and elk together is about $30.

I'm in Great Falls as well... no 10 year residency yet though, lol. You'll probably be in prime elk country where you're moving to. I got out and hunted for the first time since I've been here. Saw some nice bull elk being brought into town from around where I've been hunting, near the Little belt mountains. Most weren't what you'd consider "trophies" in the elk ranks... but they were all nice bulls... nice spreads with good mass.

well, i'm pretty excited about scouting for some good areas. that is great that it is so cheap to get a tag. it's a couple hundred dollars for a in state tag here in utah. lookin' forward to doing some fishing up around polson also.

I'm in Thompson Falls, about hour, hour and a half from you. There supposed to be really good pheasant hunting up there..mixture of both whitetail and mule deer up there. Pretty country. Good luck with the move

yeah, i was just up there for a week with my business partner. he has five acres and there were pheasants all over the place. i also saw two really big bull elk in the back of some trucks. it sure is a neat area. i also saw a group of about 12 wild turkeys. and every 1/2 mile it seemed there was a dead deer on the road.

I've been there a few times, nice country. But don't know any of the trails for wheelin. Try m4x4a.org the local 4x4 club has a forum there. I'm still learnin the trails in the Gt. Falls area after 12 years. But I long for the strawberry valley, was a good place to hunt when I left.
