View Full Version : First time off road
scarface50 11-06-2006, 03:40 PM So yesterday was my first time having any vehicle offroad. This is my first FSB and first truck with 4x4. A guy I know got stuck about a mile off the road in 2 feet of mud. The mud and water was up to my bumpers. Took about a half hour of pullin and steering to get past the firt giant mud area. I just about getting him out and front tire went flat.
I unhooked him, got myself out, changed the tire, went back in. Cant give up on my truck. Then hooked him back up, pulled again. Strap broke. Strap ended up breaking about six times. All I had left was a 5 foot chain. Hooked that up with the strap and pull him right out.
I'll have some pics up soon. I didnt know how good these Bronco's were in the mud. I have low tread tires too. Cant wait to lift it and add the Pro Comp M/T's.
big_ol_bronco78 11-06-2006, 03:48 PM always great to hear people really showing other and realizing how great broncos are
Kitty 11-06-2006, 03:57 PM i'm curious as to why you kept using a strap that broke and then broke 5 more times after that
was there nothing else available to be used and what kind of strap were you using to have it snap that many times
my advice would be to go out and buy a proper strap so you don't have to run into these safety issues again.
glad to hear that you're getting into the sport though.
Monster 351 4X4 11-06-2006, 04:17 PM good to here that you are not afraid to get down and dirty thats the only way to find out what it could really do. Never underestamate what broncos can really do. Glad to here you didnot give up but use a chain or the proper tow strap next time. BRONCOS are the best was your friend driving a heep. if you did not know what a heep is fyi its a jeep (noob) lol:thumbup :histerica

Because sometimes, you use what you have. Not all off-road incidents are planned. I had to retrieve a friend's F-150 with my Ranger using nothing more than a swingset chain wrapped 5 times around a ball hitch. It was a 60-foot chain when we started, it was a 10-foot chain when we got to the pavement. Unsafe? yeah, maybe. But we got that damn F-150 out of that artillery impact area!
chexmix 11-07-2006, 03:04 AM Good to hear, sounds like you didn't have any trouble piloting your beast. For your tires, forget procomp. Just read over the net about those! You'll be better off with some BFG MTs or some swampers Just my 2¢ :thumbup
scarface50 11-07-2006, 10:38 AM I was using the same tow strap that my dad used to pull 18 inch thick stumps with deep root out of the ground. I was suprised it broke. We have used that same type of strap a million times but he was real stuck. He was in a 2003 Dodge. Heavy truck in deep mud. When I got my flat I left the mud to go change it and he tried moving his truck again and got stuck next to a tree. About 8 inch thick trunk. I pull him through that tree. Knocked the tree down and gave him a flat in the process. I already went out and bought some New York chain. Dont know if you guys have ever seen that stuff but the links arent round in circumference. Its square and impossible to cut without a plasma cutter. Also got a thicker strap.
I kept using the strap because it was long enough for my truck to not be in the mud and pull his truck but eventually it got real short.
My dad had a Bronco years ago and said he was using it as a plow truck and was able to push snow piles as high at the truck without any problem. This bronco was also his and he gave it to me.
My cousin had a jeep and I dont think it could hold a candle to the Bronco.
jermil01 11-07-2006, 11:24 AM and no pics???
scarface50 11-07-2006, 02:13 PM my brother took some on the camera phone but they were really dark. Im going to go back out there and take some pics of the place.
daverbmxer 11-07-2006, 02:42 PM Download Irfanview (great free image viewer) and then go Image ---> Enhance Colors and crank up the brightness. It's amazing how much color and detail is hidden in there by darkness. Then post them :rockon

If this was so unsafe, then what would you recommend he do? He had a strap with him, +1. The strap broke and he improvised a new way to use it, +1. He wheeled with another vehicle so they were there to get each other out if need be, +1. How was he being unsafe?
I wish we were all smart enough to buy unbreakable straps like you kitty.

Don't you know? As soon as the strap breaks, you give up completely.

YES!!! that is the key to offroading!!!
if that was the case, than when peoples trucks cut off from rolling through deep water, or their hub broke, they would just pick up and go home, to cry themselves to sleep in a dark lonely room. :goodfinge

I think what she meant was "Were you using a piece of 550 cord thinking it was a strap?"
another question for OP What is that Bronco in your sig? The one with 36 inch Super Swampers?
fartman 12-18-2006, 05:22 PM I the first time I went out I had to pull a chebbie out of a few inches of water. Still remember the feeling of yanking him out and draggin his truck few feet.
