A while back I followed a thread about custom tire carriers, and found a company that sells the bearing assembly alone...
I can't find them now, despite the obvious search...any help?

I think this is what you're looking for.
Rockstomper (http://rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htm)
It's a nice beefy hinge, I've got one sitting on my work bench asking me why I don't get off my ass and weld up a tire carrier.

I think the Rockstomper ones have a psychic connection to each other. The one on my bench is asking the same question! :shocked :shocked

Just go to your local parts store, or bearing shop. All it is, is a 1" tapered bearing - you can get the bearings for just a few bucks each

Thanks guys, exactly what I was looking for.
Got the shop almost set back up after my move, so it's time to make some bumpers.
Anybody use RockStomper winch ropes? They are way cheaper than the others I have seen out there...
