View Full Version : Different idea for tire carrier hinge

I know people have used front axle spindles for tire carrier hinges. What if you took it one step farther? I am thinking if you kept the whole locking hub assembly (which could also be used as a spare if it is the same as what you already have) and welded an old stub shaft to the bumper concentric to the spindle. All you would have to do is lock the hub and you spare tire is set.

Another advantage to this setup would be that you could lock it open if you needed to.

The one problem I could see with it is if the hub and shaft have too much play and would allow the carrier to rock back and forth.

Has anybody tried this? I won't be getting to that project for a while, so I would love to see somebody else try it first:toothless

That's been posted around POR for at least a couple years now

So does it work? I have never seen one. Are you talking about por4X4? I didn't see any discussions there.

Thanks for the info. I will keep looking.

Seems like an awful big chunk of iron to hang off the bumper for no good reason (much smaller reliable methods abound).

. . . just my opinion.:whiteflag

I'd say it does. That page has been posted for at least a couple years, too

so you just unlock it to open and lock it in whatever position you want?
