View Full Version : 1/2" allen wrench
jackhart 11-15-2006, 04:07 PM i recently ordered a new rear bumper and when it arrived today, the list of tools required included a 1/2" allen wrench.
i thought i had it covered, but when i went to check out my set of allen wrenches, i saw the sae set only went up to 3/8". whoa, wtf?
i went to my various sources - HD, local auto parts store, village hardware store, nobody carried 1/2". finally drove way out of my way and scored one at sears for $9. it's BIG.
just wondering, how many of you actually have a 1/2" allen wrench in your toolbox?
redwagon 11-15-2006, 04:08 PM yes

dont know why I have it but I do.

lightnin 11-15-2006, 05:23 PM LOL
MikE2 11-15-2006, 05:55 PM I got them up to 1" or around there. They go on a rachet though, not an actual "L" shaped wrench
bmc69 11-15-2006, 06:02 PM yeah..I gots some real big ones.:toothless too many years working on heavy equipment..that uses recessed allan pipe plugs in every cottin pickin lube plug. And then there is the fact that every German car uses them too..heck, you can't change the oil in some of 'em without a dang big allen wrench.:duh
bigbroncojeff 11-15-2006, 06:09 PM i have all the larger ones for ratchets standard+metric... but i have never used em on a car... i am a fork lift technician.... most sets just go up to 3/8" though
ctfuzzy 11-15-2006, 07:06 PM Yup. In 1/2" drive. I used to work on heavy equipment also.
lightnin 11-15-2006, 08:12 PM My 7/8 is an L shape allen wrench not a socket.
stangmata 11-15-2006, 09:55 PM Get one for a socket. I have a bunch that run up to 3/4"
bigblockbuggy 11-15-2006, 10:14 PM I have one, dont remember why I bought it, bt I needed it at the time. Anyhow, if you are ever in a pinch for an allen head socket, I have in the past welded a hex head bolt backward in an old or cheap socket and used it for a wrench. It works, but if you needed to use it alot, it would probably end up twisting off.
Later,
Jason
89bko 11-15-2006, 10:19 PM Well, my dad has one. Does that count? He bought it to adjust the chain tension on his motorcycle. I dont think I've seen it used any other time.
BlueBronco 11-16-2006, 10:22 AM I got them up to 1" or around there. They go on a rachet though, not an actual "L" shaped wrench
That's the best type to have for the larger stuff!
Metallheadd 11-16-2006, 11:15 AM I have the big ones...up to 13/16 I need them in the machine shop.
coloranger 11-16-2006, 01:20 PM Any D60 kingpin ownerw out there? Needed one to rebuild the axle (7/8 IIRC)
lightnin 11-16-2006, 01:25 PM Yup thats the reason I bought mine. Don't need it now. Sold the axle.

Big, tried to buy one for mine at Pepboys, Advance auto and Checker to no avail. I didn't find one so I welded-up one and proceded to twist it till it broke, then went and spent the bling at sears to get a socket style.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! Why that kind of hardware to mount a bumper??? How about some pics of said bumper?
85f150 11-16-2006, 01:50 PM I have a set of the std L shaped ones up to 1". Never have used them as they were passed on to me. THey just sit and collect dust. I used a 3/4" for something on our tractor but that was too long ago to remem
Ralphenstein 11-16-2006, 02:52 PM My 7/8 is an L shape allen wrench not a socket.
That could double as a tire iron!

The short peice is about 2" I cut it off and gave it to a friend of mine cause he didn't have that size for his set. Still plenty long. The allen wrench, 4 ft. cheater and some heat to break the kingpin free.
Steve83 11-17-2006, 03:12 AM I don't have a 1/2" Allen, but I do have a 13mm on 1/2" drive. Range Rover front differential plugs. :banghead
bockwho 11-18-2006, 06:07 AM find the right bolt head crank the nut down on to it slap some spark to it and you have what ever size you need. I had to use this to fill my trans fluid in my j**P

Last time I used the set was to change the Rubi's tranny juice.
MikeW 12-04-2006, 09:54 PM I would recomend the S&K socket set.

So THATS what is used to hold your bronco up on its jack stands. :goodfinge
raceear 02-04-2007, 03:45 AM I have up to 7/8" I use them alot in electrical panels and transformers
drkhrs925 04-10-2007, 03:34 PM just a quick note, Orchard sells these but is discontinuing them. So, If you have to do a kingpin rebuild I would suggest getting one soon because the socket type is not up to the task of kingpin removal
78 beast 04-10-2007, 03:45 PM I made a 7/8 allen for when I get my dana 60 for king pin replacement
c-dub 04-10-2007, 10:29 PM just picked one up for a 03 cobra oil cooler. i was lucky to find it, but would much rather have the socket.
